The One Night That Changed My Life Forever

LA Baby ;)

"You want me to do what sorry?"
"Play next game, in LA. With Pat out we need another strong right winger. You've got the skill."
"I've only been on the ice for like four weeks. I don't think thats enough time."
"I think you're ready physically." Q said. "You're starting to look like your old self, fitting in with the guys. It's up to you but physically I think you'll be fine. We can call up someone else, but it would be nice to have you back."
"Seriously? You think I'm ready?"
"Yes." Q said nodding. "Jon agrees, captain and all."
"And if I do terrible?"
"You won't. If you did, ehh it's just a game. One we'd like to win, but not the end of the world. No one would be mad if you were nervous, but I think you'll adapt just fine based on what I've seen so far with you adapting to your life."
"I guess I can give it a shot." I said shrugging. "If I'm not feeling it I'm going to let you know."
"Sounds fair. It'll be nice to see you on my bench again Mrs. Kane." He said smiling.
"An honour to be under your coaching, Mr Quenneville." I said shaking his hand laughing, before exiting his office.
"So do I have atleast one Kane playing for me in LA?" Jon asked coming up beside me.
"Yes, now you better damn well help me out there. My nerves are sky rocketing right now."
"You'll be fine." He said sliming his arm around my shoulders, giving me a little squeeze. "No go find that boy of yours and go get some rest. I'll see you at the airport bright and early tomorrow." He said winking, before returning to the locker room.
"Patrick!"
"What?"
"Why'd you have to get hurt?"
"Uhhhh I don't know. Why?"
"Cause guess who's playing in LA tomorrow?"
He smirked. "Taking my spot after all huh Carson?" Smirk turning into a laugh.
"Funny because?"
"When we first started dating and we learned you played hockey, you made me a promise to never take my spot. So it's kinda funny how it ended up happening."
"Oh sorry. I didn't know."
"Just teasing. I knew it would come eventually. You'l do great don't worry." He said picking up on my nervous emotions.
"We'll see won't we." I said not convinced.
"Mrs. I can't remember being rookie of the year should believe her husband and probably Jon, and well Coach because you would have seen them before me and they would've said the same thing…that you will do just fine."
"Oh goodness! Scott lives in LA!"
"Yes!" He said mimicking me.
"I have to see him! He's still mad at that party you threw me. I owe him his Sens signatures, and well maybe a ticket to the game."
"Got that covered. He can chill with an injured right winger in the box."
"I don't know how he is around strangers." I said laughing.
"Ohh but I'm only a stranger to you. Me and Scott are tight." He said winking.
"Okay." I said laughing. "I'm still going to give him a call. You bringing the kids?
"Probably. It's easier with there being two of us now. And me being gimpish."
"Haha. True." I said smiling. "Yo T. how ya liking the wheels?"
"Amazing!" He said wide eyed. "I'm a cool dude." He said making the peace sign causing both Patrick and I to burst out laughing.
"Dude, just your name makes you cool." Pat said laughing. "Imagine what Rach looked like stepping out of that car."
"Yah she's coooool." He said. "Gotta get to the house. Celia said it's my turn to make lunch. I've got to pick her up at your place, so you guys ready to head out? If not I can just wait at your place."
"Nah, we're good." Pat said.
"So how are we going to tell the cars apart." I said laughing.
"Damn Hawks colours." Pat said chuckling. "We've got the cool licence plate. KANE88 wins."
"Maybe I should just put my old one back on then? We all know which one's cooler."
"Definitely hers."
"See, I win." I said high fiving Tuevo before climbing into the car. "I'm not racing!"
"You're having fun aren't you?"
"Yah. I actually am. I'm surprising myself. My life is pretty cool, to quote T. I honestly didn't know what to think, but after a month everyone's been really welcoming, and people are really cool, good friends. Not a bad life to wake up to, even if I don't remember how I got to have it."
"So your comfortable here. You know this life. Everything?"
"You mean being married to you? The kids?" I said smiling.
"I guess. I mean that falls under everything."
"Then yes."
"Yeah?"
"Yes, Patrick Timothy Kane I am comfortable." I said laughing.
"Okay, good." He said chuckling.
"I'm happy. Not remembering sucks, but I'm happy." I said squeezing his hand as we pulled into the parking garage. "Come on lets go get the kiddos." I said as I parked the car.
"Rach." He said wrapping me in an awkward one handed hug.
"Yes gimpy?"
"Do I make you happy?"
Yes, you make me very happy." I said smiling. "Perfect husband over the past month, for sure." I said winking.
"Good, momma taught me well."
"Did she?" I asked chuckling.
"Mhmm want to know what else she taught me?"
"What?" I asked. Oh that kiss is going to be the death of me, I thought to myself. "She teach you how to pucker up or something?" I asked laughing.
"No. She said to always make sure the person you love, knows that you love them. So on that note…I love ya Rach."
"Thank you." I said smiling and following him out of the elevator. Tuevo and Celia left not long after our arrival claiming starvation. I was currently calling my brother over skype to have a much needed sibling chat.
"Yo."
"Hello brother." I said laughing.
"How's life been treating you?"
"Pretty good. Starting to fall back into old routines I think."
"Sweet. I hope that memory of yours comes back soon. How's that hubby of yours?"
"Hurt. Did you watch?"
"No. Damn is it bad?"
"Just screwed up his shoulder. A couple weeks rest, could have been worse."
"That sucks!"
"It does. Now guess what tomorrow is?"
"Wednesday?"
"No shit dimwit. No it involves your favourite sister and an airplane, and being in the same timezone. Any guesses?"
"You bringing my little niece and nephew?"
"Mhmmm, you want tickets?"
"Is Ottawa playing?"
"Haha funny. You and this Grace girl still engaged?"
"Yes." He said laughing. "So who's playing? I've already got ticket offers from your man Quick. The LA goalie." He said winking.
"Oh well that's fine I guess. I'll ask Grace then."
"Ask me what?" I heard and saw a girl pop into the picture. Not bad Scotty. Not bad.
"Wan't a ticket to the hockey game tomorrow night? Scott's rebelling, so I'm offering it to you."
"Sure."
"Sweet. I can't wait to re-meet you. But know I'm bringing you a Hawks jersey. You can't be seen with gimpy in an LA jersey."
"Gimpy?"
"Oh right, the husband has a hurt shoulder."
"Ahh I see." She said laughing.
"Alright I'll see you tomorrow then. Good luck getting good tickets from Quick." I said sticking my tongue out at my brother before officially saying goodbye. I know the LA goalie too, first Parise now Quick, who's next. I thought as I received a text from Quick wishing me luck in the game tomorrow. DONT get my brother a ticket no matter how much he grovels was my reply.
FLASHBACK

"Hello?"
"Hey it's Zach."
"Uhhhh…."
"Right. I heard about the memory thing. Parise. The one your husband probably wants to kill at the moment."
"It was a clean hit. I think he's more mad at himself right now."
"So how's he doing?"
"Well I've got him over the mopey stage. Now he's in the relaxing bath stage, then I've got the painkillers and food stage and I hope he's better after that, I'd say a couple weeks."
"Pat moping, never!" He gasped. "I honestly don't know what happened. He just buckled and that was it."
"It was just a routine play gone wrong. I've seen it happen."
"Well I just wanted to see how he was doing. I felt bad even though it wasn't on purpose. So how are you, re-adjusting?"
"Getting there. Obviously we knew each other as I have you in my contacts."
"Yah. We hung out a bit at the Olympics. Then after a couple games, and the NHL Awards over the summer."
"Then we'll have to hang next time we play each other. I'm going to have to finish dinner, but text me."
"Sounds good. Hope you get better soon. Oh hey keep me updated on Pat. "
"Sure."
"Thanks. Bye.
"Bye." I said hanging up the phone.
END FLASHBACK

And here I was conversing with the opposing goalie for tomorrow's game. I thought shaking my head at myself. Typical, right?
"What up?" Pat asked coming into the room and flopping on the bed.
"Well my overconfident brother claimed he could get better tickets from his LA connections, so I'm just telling those "connections" not to get him one. I know his fiancé is coming, and she agreed to wear a Hawks jersey." I said winking. "Scott will end up joining you too." I said shaking my head smiling at my brother. "Okay sorry to cut this day short, but I really just want to pack and sleep.
"Understandable." He said chuckling.
"Good thing we're only there for one night. "
"Don't need much."
"Nope." I said chucking a couple pairs of shorts in the duffel, followed by a Hawks tank, and then just one of my own. A light coat, pair of pants and a pair of socks, underwear and shoes, and the street clothes portion was done. "What did I wear into games?"
"Sometimes a skirt, but just wear the dress pants and a nice shirt."
"Sounds good." I said folding the pants neatly and putting them along with a nice top into my duffel. After finding the thinks like makeup… my bag was packed and ready to go.
"There that wasn't bad." I said flopping back onto the bed. "Hey Bells." I said laughing at the girl who had escaped her bed and crawled into our room; picking her up. "I don't think daddy minds another sleeping buddy." I said cuddling with her on the bed.
"Mommy's going to be the one sleeping." He said chuckling. And sure enough it was true, as I woke up to my alarm stating it was time to get ready to head to the airport.
One new message. Haha Quick.
Just saw you've been officially taken of Injury Reserve. It's on.

Oh its on. I thought to myself as I made myself a coffee and went to work on a couple omelettes as Pat worried about the kids. Under an hour later we were at the airport ready to board the plane destined for warmer weather.
"Well there goes my idea of sleeping on the plane." Shaw said as we got on the plane.
"Oh shush. Bella's sleeping, and so is mini me. Well never mind, Bella's up." I said chuckling as she woke up looked around her surroundings spotting Jon and instantly wanting to go to him.
"Hey baby girl." He said as she curled into him and closed her eyes.
"Well then." I said chuckling as we took the two seats left for us. "How's the shoulder today?"
"Sore, but not full out painful so it's getting better."
"That's good." I said lying my head against his good shoulder falling asleep only to be woken to mini me waking up. "Hey." I said giving him a small kiss on his forehead. I took a picture of Jon and Bella both asleep.
"Cute huh?" Sharpie said looking at the two.
"Yes." I said chuckling. It was really cute.
"You ready for tonight?"
"For the game no. To see my brother, yes." I said chuckling.
"Awe kiddo, you'll do great."
"Thanks. We'll see in a few hours I guess."
"You'll be fine." He said winking. We'll see I thought to myself as I shook Patrick awake as we were about to land.
"Who fly's in at 8 in the morning?" I heard as we walked through the gate, waiting for the bus to arrive.
"The friggin best team in the NHL that's who."
"Well then."
"Hey Grace." I said hugging the girl. "So I've got a jersey for you." I said pulling out a jersey with my number on it. "Might not want to show it off around here though." I said winking.
"Why thank you." She said folding it into her purse.
"So what…no love for your big brother?"
"No. How'd your ticket search go?"
"Great." He said shaking his head. "Minus the fact that you told Quick not to get me one."
"What? Me? Never? So you want to sit with these two?"
"If I have to." He said sighing.
"Sweet. Come by the game early and we can hang out a bit beforehand…but we've got to get to the hotel and morning skate. You could come if you wanted to watch us skate around…"
"The life of an NHL player." Scott said hugging me.
"Jealous." I said winking.
"You know it. Jon want's you I think." He said nodding over to where the bus had pulled up.
"Alright see ya guys." I said giving them each one last quick hug before Pat and I walked back to the bus.
"Ohhh shush Jon, the bus just got here." I said laughing. "Hi Bella." I said playing with the girl in his arms.
"She want's you." He said holding her out to me as I handed mini me off to Pat. "Now get on the damn bus." He said small smirk etched on his face.
"Gosh. Didn't your mom ever teach you not to rush a woman carrying a baby?" I huffed.
"Oh you just…" He said zipping his lips. "You're turning into Kaner."
"Wow. That hurt. I mean that was like offensive." I said clutching my heart before laughing softly. "Jonny, Jonny, Jonny. Of course I am, it's all in the last name." I said winking before grabbing the seat across the aisle across from Pat beside Tuevo. We had become friends over the past week. I mean the kid is pretty funny. Bella kept trying to grab his hair, and kept motioning that she wanted to go to him.
"Alright, Alright." He said chuckling as the girl climbed on his lap. I found myself laughing at the next part.
"Don't even think about it T." I said laughing. "You're 18 years older. I mean I know you need a girlfriend but no way in hell are you taking my daughter out so don't even ask."
"Yah mate. You should have told me how you felt right off the get go. 7 years is pushing it…I'm with Rach on this one." Pat said as Bella sat there curled up in Tuevo's arms smiling almost triumphantly."
"Your baby is sneaky." He said laughing.
"She just likes guys." I said shaking my head.
"Well duh….she's a girl." Shaw said
"Really?" I said laughing. "She must have been around you guys quite a bit. Every time she sees one of you she wants you."
"Well… That's just because we're awesome." Andrew said winking.
"Right. We'll go with that. I just think she loves guys. Which, Patrick will be a problem when she becomes older." I said looking over to him.
"Haha just wait until you see Mini me…" Sharpie said laughing. "At like 18. If he's anything like Patrick was….good luck on both children. Really if they've got any Kane in them then look out." He said laughing.
"Sorry." Pat said shrugging.
"It's fine." I said laughing. "They're just jealous of how gorgeous our kids are."
"No way…well they are cute." Andrew said.
"Et voila" I said laughing. "Now gimme back my babe." I said as the bus pulled up to the hotel.
"Alright Bella. You're al changed, fed and ready to go. Let's go see little Patrick." I said scooping her up and heading out of the bathroom. Damn, get a grip. I thought to myself after seeing Pat on the bed with mini me curled into him. I mean… goodness I'm in trouble.
"You know, we can see you right." Pat said chuckling, breaking me from my thoughts.
"I was just admiring how cute little Patrick is." I said winking.
"Right." He said smirking.
"Ehhhh the other Patrick isn't too bad either." I said giving him what he wanted.
"Why thank you. But enough Patrick loving for right now…hockey time." he said getting up, and we made our way to the bus and to morning skate.
*********
Patrick's POV:
"She's looking pretty good huh?" I heard a voice come up behind me.
"Getting there."
"How's the shoulder?"
"Getting there." I said chuckling. "So you come to see your competition?"
"Nah, had to get some work done on my equipment and they wanted me to test it out before tonight. Thought I'd see how my favourite Hawk was doing."
"And that is not me." I chuckled.
"Nope. Not even close." He said laughing.
"Hurt."
"Sorry." He said shrugging. "Stop scoring on me."
"But that's the fun part." I said laughing. "Stop letting them in."
"I try… Hey monkey." He said as Bella looked him over before wanting to go to him.
"Well she's not shy."
"Ahhh nope. Furthest from it."
"Well she's cute."
"Thanks." I said nodding.
"Haha looks like my niece has got good taste." Scott said chuckling as he came up to us. "Where is …ahh there she is." He said looking onto the ice.
"Haha yah. They are almost done by the looks of it."
"She going to be ready to play soon?" I laughed, I had forgotten that he didn't know she was playing.
"Soon." I said sharing a glance with Quick.
"Well we just wanted to stop by before heading home and see a bit of practice. But it looks like we missed most of it, and Rach is going to take a while so we'll be back before the game."
"She won't be too long. Coach will want to talk to them first, but if you wanted to stay you could."
"Nah. We're going to go get lunch, and we'll be back by the time she's done napping."
"Alright. Just text me when you guys get here and i'll come find you."
"Sounds good. Quick. Not happy with you man. Making me slum with the Hawks, not cool man not cool."
"Well I like your sister better, soo…" He said smirking, putting on a shrug. "Plus your sister offered you tickets, not my fault."
"Fiiiine. See ya guys." They said waving good bye. They had been there for roughly half an hour so practice was over, and now it was just a matter of waiting for everyone to get out.
"Hey, Quick. Can you go find Rach? She doesn't know where the box is… I've got to deal with this little one." I said pointing to mini me.
"Yah, sure. The things I do for you." He said chuckling before grabbing out his phone and leaving the room.
"You and me, buddy. You and me."
*******************
Rachel's POV
Quick~~ I'm coming to find you. Stand in front of the poster and I'll be there in five…Pat's playing daddy ;)
Me~~Sounds good.
"Who's that? Damn !"

"Maybe it's her first shift or something."

"She looks professional or something."

"Damn. Look at that body. Smokin."
"Excuse me miss, we just happened to notice you looking around. Are you lost?" Two obviously hockey players asked.
"Just waiting for somebody, thanks."
"A beautiful girl waiting, now that's just not right."
"We could take you out for dinner. Maybe show you around town."
"Yah real smooth." The one guy said chuckling. " How about you come to tonights game. We can get you a ticket." The one guy said smiling.
"That's okay. I've already got an ice level view. Thanks though." I said laughing,
"Some of us are clubbing after, you in? We will have to celebrate our win tonight."
"Oh you guys play here?"
"Yeah, it's our first year. "
"So you're what 19, 18?"
"Uhh 19."
"Haha alright." I said chuckling. "This is America right? No drinking tsk tsk boys."
"We manage." The boys said winking.
"So you use your status to break laws?" I asked.
""Uhhh I guess."
"Haha guys don't worry. I'm just a bit old for you two. Plus you only came over here because you think I'm attractive." I said laughing.
"You are. Please come out tonight."
"Can't." I said laughing. "I've got obligations. Speaking of here's one." I said squatting down. "Awe hi honey." I said picking up the girl who had walked over to me, and saw who must be Quick smiling at me.
"Are these losers hassling you?" Quick asked coming to give me a huge hug.
"Nahhh they just really want to go out with me." I said smirking. "What do you say? Good intentions?"
"What were you like at 19? Now answer your own question."
"Oh." I said laughing. "Sorry boys your goalie has spoken."
"He doesn't know anything." The one guy retorted.
"He knows her." The other said.
"Alright boys. It was nice meeting you. I hope you two each find the girl of your dreams. I may look like her but she ain't me. I'll see you two after the game if your lucky." I said winking.
"Wait. Where are you sitting?"
"Bench seats, you'll see me." I said waving.
"Sorry about them…They're the rookies."
"S'alright. I put myself in that position." I said pulling my ring off the chain before sliding it on. "I took it off to practice."
"Understandable. Thats cute that you still wear it."
"I might not remember the whole getting married thing. But for me being married signifies something, and I want to show it. "
"I missed you." Quick said hugging me again.
"Awweee I would miss me too." I said winking.
"Yeah, yeah….funny." He said laughing. "She's gotten big huh." He said nodding towards Bella who was currently bitting the drawstring of my coat.
"She's getting there yes." I said chucking. "Where's you soother baby girl? I think it tastes better than my coat."
"Dada." She gurgled as her face lit up.
"Yes that's Dada. Let's go get that soother from him."
"Dada." She said arms outstretched towards Pat as he walked up. He smiled before we exchanged kids. Bella went off on a talking rampage although it wasn't understandable in the least.
"You looked good out there." Quick mentioned.
"Ehhhh…Thanks. Trying to figure out my moves before the game tonight?" I asked smirking.
"No. Just an added bonus of watching a friend." He said laughing. "But I've got to be going to a practice of my own. See ya on the ice." He said waving.
"See ya Quick." Pat said laughing.
"He seems nice." I said. "I met him at the olympics right?"
"He is very nice, unless you don't score on him." Pat said laughing. "Let's get back to the hotel, oh and your brother says you looked ready to play again and he wants you to tell him when you're playing again."
"Oh." I said chuckling. We grabbed a cab back to the hotel, and I settled in for a much needed sleep.
********
Quick's POV:
"Dude. Who was that chick? She's smoking!" Oh god rookies I thought shaking my head.
"Not happening." I said chuckling.
"Why not? You're the shittiest wingman ever."
"She's out of you're fucking league." I said laughing. "Plus she's already taken dipshit."
"Quick you're tapping that?" He said eyes widening.
"No." I said laughing. "Just friends."
"Friends with a kid?" He said eyes widening again like he just remembered the kid part of it.
"Who are you two talking about. Who's this irresistible chick that's got our rookies riled up and whispering between each other?"
"Rachel." I said winking.
"Well hot damn. I'd be like these two then. She is fucking hot." Doughty said laughing before returning back to his stall.
"Man! Rach was here and you didn't tell me? I wanted to see the kiddos." Carter said play punching me in the shoulder. "How's she doing anyways?"
"Better. Still no memory though."
"It'll come."
"I hope." I said agreeing before putting on the rest of my equipment and heading out to practice.
**
"Well she's going to be here tonight." I heard the rookies talking in front of me.
"Good God. There are many of friggin hot girls, go take your pick."
"What if she's my pick."
"Then be ready to be disappointed." I said nodding as the Hawks bus had pulled away and the guys started to make their way down the hall.
"Ughh the Hawks. Let's kick their asses."
"Wait dude look." The other rookie said.
"What? It's the Hawks, no shit."
"No at the back, beside Kaner."
"What? Oh bench seats my ass!"
"And just like that my work is done." I said clapping my hands before leaving the two flabbergasted rookies.
"Idiots." I said laughing as I entered the living room.
"Shut up." They muttered getting a laugh from all the other guys.
"And that is why they are called rookies." Doughty said laughing. "In what alternate universe would you hit on Kane's wife?"
"They are married?"
"Fucking no change now." They grumbled.
"Earth to the rookies. You had no chance this morning either, or the year before, or even the year before that." Carter said laughing.
"Whatever." They said getting ready, and not long after we were on the ice ready to get this game on the road.
********************
Rachel's POV
"Those two." I said chuckling as Pat threw his arm around my shoulders for good measure.
"Ehhhh….they've got nothing on me." He chuckled giving the rookies a playful glare causing them to retreat quickly into their locker room. "You told em you had bench seats? Oh they are f-ing going to love this."
"Well it's not a lie. I think my actual words were ice level seats." I said laughing.
"No it's not." He said laughing. "Boys take care of my girl out there." He said after giving me a hug. "Oh and kick their fucking asses, and maybe lay into the rookies a little." He said smirking. The boys laughed and nodded as he left the room and we got ready.
"What are you listening to?" Jon asked an amused look on his face as he sat down in the stall next to me. I handed him an earbud. "Oh god…you and Kaner." He said shaking his head. "You can't even understand the words."
"That don't matter Jonny Boy. It's just to get me pumped up." I said laughing at his face. "Here you'll like this one better." I said scrolling down on my pump up playlist and finding a french song.
"Ugghh. Atleast you can understand the lyrics." He said laughing. "Alright put it away and lets hit the ice." He said patting my back.
"Nervous?" Sharpie asked as we walked down the tunnel.
"Nervous doesn't begin to describe it. I just feel like I'm going to screw up. Like someone just plopped me out of college hockey and said hey you're the first chick in the NHL enjoy."
"Umm, well I can't say I've experienced that first hand. But hey! You are the first chick in the NHL, and damn right enjoy it! You didn't get here too easily if that's what you're thinking. It was hardly a plop." He said laughing.
"Thanks Sharpie." I said laughing. "I'll have to trust you I guess." I said stepping onto the bench.
"I guess you will." He said nodding, before patting me on the back as I skated out to the blue line.
"Who's effing idea was it to put me top line." I said scowling at Jon beside me.
"Kaner's replacement gets his spot too." Jon said smirking.
"Funny." I said as I took my helmet off to stand for the American anthem. "Good thing Kaner's replacement has the same name then… wouldn't want anyone gutting mixed up now would we?" I said chuckling as we got set to take the face-off.
"Ill take you as his replacement any day. He's annoying."
"Sure." I said chuckling, feeling the adrenaline kicking in as the puck dropped, and the game had started. It wasn't a bad game. I got one assist on a 1-0 victory. Jon had scored the only goal of the game, on a beauty top shelf deke. Other than that it was a complete goalie shutdown. No close calls, nothing. The goalies had stolen the show that's for sure, but it was nice to have this game as a win. I think both teams ended up frustrated from the lack of offence in the means of goals, but we took the win. Everyone said I had played great. Uggh I thought it was alright, but I was in the boat of frustrated people without a goal. But hey, an assist not bad. Scott was mad at first for not telling him, but he got over it and couldn't stop telling me how excited he was for me. I don't know which had been worse. We were on a plane the next morning heading back to the windy city. We had gotten one nice night in LA. Scott had watched the kids, and forced Pat and I out with the rest of the team. It had been pretty low key. A team dinner, and then a bit of clubbing, but nothing over the top especially for me. Overall, LA hadn't been so bad I thought to my self smiling as I flopped into my bed, as we had just gotten back from the airport.

Not, bad at all...

Great job

Amazing job. Wasn't expecting him to have another kid from a different relationship in this story. Kudos for them for not resenting each other or the kid though. Great job
