In Your Eyes

Twelve

Two movies later, Sid and Piper found themselves asleep on his couch. Their bodies were cradled closely, Sid's arm spread out beneath Piper's as they shared one large pillow. The television had been on a screensaver during most of their nap: a bright Blu-ray logo slowly bounced from side to side on a black background, which as now the only light in the room.

When the pair woke, the afternoon was waning and the lack of sunlight through the thick clouds made the day seem even darker. They laughed when it occurred to them that they'd fallen asleep, missing the end of the second movie. Despite this fact - neither moved from the couch. They remained in one another's arms, talking softly.

"You know, I can't even remember the last time I did this" Sid said with a muted smile. "Honestly. I don't take days off."

Piper let her finger glide along his perfect jaw to the tip of his chin. "You should really change that."

"I wish I could. This could be pretty addicting."

She smiled, continuing to trace the lines of his face very lightly, barely touching him as she drew her finger around his mouth. "I can't believe you broke this." Her finger glided back along the side of Sid's jaw that would now forever have a plate inside. "Amazing, really."

His gaze softened. "I had amazing surgeons." When he felt Piper's finger float around to his nose and town to his mouth again, he broke into a grin. "That really tickles…"

"I know, I see you trying to be all tough and not move."

Sid saw the smirk he loved appear as the green of Piper's eyes glinted. Her side-swept bangs were blocking him from seeing both eyes, so he very gently pushed them back behind her ear as best he could. "A shame they hide such beautiful eyes."

"That's what I think about the hat you always wear" she teased. She drew her finger around his lips, wanting to see if she could get him to flinch again. When Sid couldn't hold it any longer, he chuckled and grabbed her finger.

"Tickles!"

"You love it."

"I do" he said, voice lowering. "I really love a lot that you do…"

Their mouths connected because they couldn't get enough of one another. Sid was admittedly addicted. For the first time in a long time, he felt like he had a real connection with someone; someone he could trust, who was spontaneous and fun and who was sexy as hell. When Piper told him she was able to have her shifts covered all week, he felt like exploding with excitement. He did his best to keep it together, but it proved difficult to not show the full extent of how thrilled he was about spending an entire week with Piper. She'd likely think he was nuts if he showed her exactly how he felt, so he toned it done…..but only just a bit.

Now, as their tongues brushed against one another and Sid felt Piper's hands sliding down to his growing erection, he pulled back briefly.

"We don't have to" he said, his eyes still locked on the pink of her lips.

"What?" Piper's eyes widened ever so slightly, looking somewhat fearful. "You don't want to?"

He cupped her face and smiled. "You know I want to." He flicked his eyes downwards and Piper giggled. "But I think, since we have all week, we have a chance to connect in other ways."

He's not real. Piper wanted to shake her head, pinch herself, snap her fingers, pop a balloon - anything - to knock her down from this cloud of disbelief. He can't be real. Where did he learn this shit? Do men actually think this way?

"Besides" he said, bringing her focus back. "I don't know how much more pounding you can take."

Piper gasped. "Sidney Patrick!"

"Uh oh….middle name…."

She slapped him on the chest as he laughed. "You know I can take you. I have before multiple times in a day, have I not?"

He was nodding, biting his bottom lip and trying not to laugh. "I know, but you just looked so serious there for a second that I had to get you to come back to me."

Piper sighed happily, settling back down onto the pillow while Sid shifted to the side, giving her more room. He was practically on top of her, despite the size of his large couch. Above all, she couldn't stop looking into his eyes.

"You know what?"

He shook his head, his left hand running slowly beneath the fabric of her shirt. "Tell me."

Well now I can't concentrate, she thought. His hand was warm, rough to the touch but tender in the way he grazed it along her stomach.

His eyes looked at her with expectancy and he gave her just the tiniest smirk as his hand slid higher. "Go on."

He knows what he's doing, that little fuck. Piper felt him squeeze her waist, his thumb pressing next to her belly button.

"I, um…"

Sid was still smirking, his hand still gripping her.

"I just wanted to…"

He slid his hand higher yet, just barely brushing against the underside of her breasts.

"Jesus, Sid--"

"Something wrong?" Now his smirk was nothing but naughty. "Cat got your tongue?"

"Captain got my tongue, that's who."

He chuckled. "Nicely played."

"Thank you."

"I'll behave." He withdrew his hand, and Piper immediately missed it. She focused on the eyes that looked at her now the same as they were minutes earlier.

"I just wanted to tell you how beautiful your eyes truly are" she said, getting it all out before he had a chance to distract her again. "They're unique. And they clearly see small rubber objects really well, to boot."

He lowered his head. "Thank you."

She saw how humbled he seemed by her comment. With her hand, she lifted his chin so that he was looking at her again. "Honestly. I'm not shining you here."

"I know you aren't."

Sid's eyes were unique, but he knew the physical reasons why. Coaches, mentors, and other players had told him he had a gift; the way he could see and assess the speed of his sport like he could. It gave him an edge just because he happened to be born with it. Girls never really pointed out specifics about him. It was always the usual posters at games, the normal shouting at him as he left any building he ever went in, the typical way chicks hit on him no matter where he went…all because of who he was.

Having Piper, who was gorgeous to him beyond proper description, tell him he had a special trait she loved that much? It was a bit different for him, but it made him feel on top of the world.

"Sorry" he said, shaking his head a little. "I'm not used to this."

"Liar." Piper smiled. "Really, though? You're not?"

"Not really. When you come to one of my games…you'll see."

Piper's heart did a somersault. He's already thinking of this fall. "I think I should come to one of your practices first." She nudged him a little. "Yeesss??"

It was what Sid wanted most. "Yes, yes, and more yes."

"Say it again." Piper held his face as he moved in.

"Yes" Sid said, sliding on top of her. "Yes, yes, yes--"

Piper was squealing under him as he pressed his full weight against her. He placed both hands on the arm rest of the couch directly behind Piper's head to hold him up slightly, his arms flexing and blocking out any sight of anything other than him.

"You could ask me anything right now and I'd say yes" he said softly.

Piper smiled up at him. All she saw was arms, muscles, smile, and eyes. "Will you make me waffles tomorrow?"

"Yes." His eyes crinkled at the corners happily.

"Will yooouuu…..Let me wear your t-shirt to bed?"

"Yes."

Piper slid her hands up his chest. "Will you fuck me right now?"

Sid let go of the armrest to take her head in his hands. "Yes."

* * *

Piper got her wish the next day.

Not only did Sidney make her waffles (this time with blueberries), but she got to see him skate for the first time live and in person.

They arrived at the rink early, and Piper walked around with her eyes wide for most of the time it took for Sid to get dressed into his gear. When he came waddling out of the locker rooms, Piper cupped her hands over her face.

"Oh my god."

He smiled, placing his white helmet on with on hand. "Is that a good 'oh my god' or is that a--"

"--It's a fucking OUTSTANDING 'oh my god'," she replied. She walked over and lifted a hand, but then stopped. "Can I touch?"

Sid let out a laugh. "No, you're not allowed to touch me whatsoever." He looked at her from beneath the clear pane of his visor.

Piper took the hint, and placed both hands over his chest. The bumps and folds of his padding beneath combined with the feeling of his jersey did things to her lady parts that she wasn't initially expecting. Sid was larger than life; his presence even more dominating. And yet…the same kind gaze stared back at her when their eyes met.

"You're hot."

He leaned forward to kiss her, tipping his helmet up with one of his gloved fingers. "Come on, I want to show you how this sport is done."

Piper trotted along, feeling a little like a V.I.P member. There wasn't a soul around the rink, yet Sid walked as if he owned the place. In a way, she guessed he did.

"Where are you going to find a seat?" Sid said, a teasing tone in his voice.

Piper looked around at the immense arena, empty save for the two of them. "I think I'll sit close."

"Behind the bench?"

She frowned. "Am I allowed?"

"As long as I'm here, you are." He stepped out onto the ice. "Then I can still talk to you."

Piper got a case of the smilies all over again. "So you're just going to shoot around, or do you have like an agenda of sorts?" She folded her arms over her chest as the chill of the ice began to hit her.

"I'll probably do my usual warm-ups then try to impress you with some tricks" Sid replied, giving her a smirk. "Sound good?"

"Sounds great."

"Bench." He pointed as he skated away.

"Yes, Sir." Piper crawled over some wooden benches and a small gate, then took a seat where only hockey players and coaches sat. It felt a little odd, considering how little knowledge or experience she had with the sport. She felt someone more deserving should sit there and to have this sort of chance…but when she looked out at Sid as he began to make wide circles across the ice, that thought immediately went poof.

Occasionally, Sid would look over and smile or wave with his stick or do some ridiculous move to grab her attention. As if Piper could look away.

She noticed a few things immediately: Sid could be as serious on the ice as he was off the ice. But there was a whole new light in his eyes, and Piper picked up on it almost immediately. He was clearly comfortable on the ice, but it was more than that. In her opinion, he was at home here. Out there. Doing what he was doing. It wasn't even a game, but she could tell.

The second thing she noticed was how graceful he was. It was never lost on her the way he was built like a cinder block: strong, sturdy, wide. And yet……surprisingly fast. Light. In control.

No wonder he fucks so well Piper thought guiltily.

When Sid marked up the ice a little, he skated over towards her spot on the bench. A light sheen of sweat made his face glisten, his upper lip sweatier than the rest of him. His lips were the color of punch; berry red and even more pronounced.

Piper realized this was going to be no easy task.

"See that bucket?" Sid pointed at the end of the bench area, his breath slightly labored. "Would you mind grabbing that?"

She went over and retrieved the bucket, which was heavy with many pucks. She lifted it with ease, and did the honors of dumping them all out onto the ice.

"Thank you." Sid leaned two arms on the ledge of the bench. "Liking it?"

"It's fucking awesome" she answered, a grin appearing. "Although I feel like I'm doing something wrong being down here. Like I'm trespassing."

He laughed. "Relax, okay? You're my girl, and you're my guest."

Pushing backwards, Sid curled three pucks into his stick to bring with him, but his eyes and smile never left Piper's.

My girl. My guest.

She began to wonder if there was a First Aid station in the building, because if he kept this up, she would pass out sooner or later.

Her attention was quickly swept up by what Sid did next. Dragging a few more pucks out to center ice, he picked one up with just his stick and faced Piper.

"Remember that Youtube you said you watched?" he asked, voice echoing. "The one where you said I handled the puck like a boss?"

"Yeessss??" She couldn't stop grinning. She knew what was coming, or she thought she did.

And she was right.

Sid bounced the puck off the end of his stick, not even looking. His eyes stayed on her, but he bumped the puck in the air and around his head and with one hand, then two, then hit it once - and it went into the net.

"Show off!" she yelled, but she was clapping the whole time. "More!"

Now he went for the puck as if it was a shoot-out, heading down to one end of the rink. Piper expected him to do some weird move or a jump or a backwards skate thingy - but nope. All of that was likely too easy.

Sid shot the puck off the glass, caught it on the flat of his stick, did a spin - and shot the puck into the net.

"What the fuck" she said under her breath.

Next he attacked the opposite side of the rink, taking two pucks with him. Piper watched with disbelief as he somehow, someway, banked one off the glass while at the same time tossing the other in the air. He hit the first and made it in, just as the other was about to land in front of him.

He shot that one too, and hit the net.

"No, for real" Piper said, standing up. "How the fuck do you do that?"

Sid shrugged as he skated over. "Been doing this a while."

"A while." She repeated the words as casually as he had, as if this was just another day at the office. It maybe have been just another skate for Sid, but this was her first live look at one of the sport's greatest….and he was hers.

"Come here" she said.

He skated closer to the bench and Piper grabbed him by his practice jersey. She didn't care that his visor knocked her in the nose when she kissed him; all she knew was that she had to kiss him.

"Whoa" he said softly, when Piper finally let him go.

"I have no words." She shook her head. "None. Zero."

Sid was smiling. "I think I like Speechless-Piper."

They kissed again, and Sid never realized how amazing it would be to have someone like her there with him.

"Show me more?" she asked.

He nodded. "You got it."

* * *

"More" Ali whispered, when she could.

James rolled over, resuming a position on top of her, their mouths never parting. "I thought you'd be tired…"

Ali felt him smirk as he kissed her. "Me?"

He nodded, and their mouths reconnected. There was strength in their embrace, both wanting more despite Ali being the only one to voice it. James could clearly tell by the way her body was responding that he was in for a good night. He didn't care that every muscle in his body ached from his workout that morning, or from the painting they literally just finished that evening.

He slid his hand down to Ali's neck, holding firmly, his thumb sliding along the flesh of her throat. A crazy thought came to mind…so crazy, that James actually hesitated.

Ali stared up at him, her breath ragged from their intense kissing. She scanned James' eyes for a sign as to why he stopped. "Babe?"

He started to laugh. With a sigh, he rested his forehead against hers. "I don't know what's wrong with me…."

"What?" Ali frowned. "What's wrong?"

"I just had a crazy idea, and I don't even know where it came from." He lifted his head so he could see her. To his surprise, Ali looked scared. "No, it's nothing bad--"

"--You're freaking me out, James."

"I know, I'm sorry. Hell, I'm freaked out." He smoothed back her dark hair away from her face, her lips flushed pink from his coarse beard. "You're going to laugh at me."

"I hope so" Ali replied, her heartbeat finally coming down.

His smile was reluctant, but growing. "I think we should try to have a baby."

Ali stared at him. "Huh?"

"A baby."

"Yes, I heard you." Ali shifted beneath him to sit up a little. He backed off, but remained positioned over her. "Did this just pop into your head?"

James looked embarrassed. He nodded tensely as he watched Ali's expression. "Am I crazy?"

"Kind of?" She smiled. "Kidding."

"I'm serious, Ali."

She could see that now…and it was freaking her out a little. "Don't you think maybe we should talk about this--"

"--We are, aren't we?"

"Yeah, but maybe when your hard on isn't pressing into my thigh?"

He laughed. "Point taken." The blue of his eyes cooled slightly as he regained his usual confidence. He waited patiently while Ali absorbed the suddenness of it all. "Listen, we don't have to do this right now, it literally just popped into my head."

She looked at him. "We just got married, babe."

"I know."

"And we just got this cabin…"

He hung his head. "I know, I KNOW."

"So where did it come from?"

All James did was shake his head, his eyes pointed down at her naked body.

Now Ali was becoming nervous for a whole other reason. "Have you been thinking about this for a while?"

James lifted his eyes. "No."

"We have time, right?"

"Yes." James' heart sank a little. The truth was, maybe the cabin and the marriage and the comfort he had with Ali and this new chapter of their life was getting to him…in a good way. He was getting all the things he wanted in life but never thought he would have. He wanted to keep the good streak going, and Ali said he'd make a good father someday. He never forgot that; it was something he wanted more than he would admit.

"Hey."

Ali's voice was soft, and James felt her hands touching his face.

"You okay?"

He nodded. "Yeah, why wouldn't I be?"

"This is really big, James."

"I know it is." He tilted his head and pressed his lips against hers softly and slowly. He wanted to feel her; he needed to feel her.

Ali felt James press himself hard against her, while his lips lead her away from his sudden idea and back to the conversation their bodies were having before it. She let him take the lead, doing her best to let go of the tension she felt from his revelation. Soon enough, James was inside her, and she could think of nothing but the pleasure he gave her thereafter.

* * *

Wednesday. Less than two days until Piper and Sid were flying to Toronto to join James and Ali Neal at their new cabin.

And yet, this was barely on Sid's mind. He had two more workouts and one more skate to go before he would be getting on a plane and going anywhere. At the moment, he was currently completing one of those workouts at the gym, and would meet Piper back at his house thereafter. Sweating through the intense, grueling workout Andy was putting him through, Sid did his best to stay focused on his muscles and the pain they felt. Whenever he had a break, as small as it was, his mind went to the woman who was waiting for him.

And though Sid didn't know it, that woman was busy readying the first floor area of his house to surprise him. Piper had packed a few special birthday-related items she still had from Bailey's last birthday and was able to keep them hidden until this very moment. She strung a banner of connected letters that spelled out "Happy Birthday" in rainbow colors over the doorway. She also had two paper cone hats, which she was going to force Sidney to wear.

Last but not least, Piper ordered Chinese food. Early on, she remembered Sid telling her how much he loved it and never really allowed himself to get it. It was why he dug it so much in the first place.

Well he will have it today, Piper thought cheerfully. She ordered five different dinner selections from a local Chinese restaurant that delivered: beef and broccoli, mandarin chicken, orange chicken, teryaki beef on a stick, and sesame chicken. Two huge containers of fried rice and lo mein were also part of the mix.

By the time she heated dinner plates, transferred the food from their white containers to the plates, and then fired up one single birthday candle - Sid was home.

Piper heard the jingle of keys first. She went over and stood in the hall where she could see Sid's reaction to the goofy banner she erected. When he opened the door, he dropped his gym bag and began to laugh.

"Oh nooooo…."

She came hurrying forward, excitement all over her face. "You didn't think you were going to get away scott-free, did you?"

Sid looked up at the childish banner, his face all aglow with surprise. "I figured you might be plotting something." When he brought his gaze down, Piper was wrapping her arms around his neck. He inhaled the light fruity fragrance of whatever perfume she was wearing, wondering if it was impossible for her to not smell good.

"I have something else" Piper said, giving Sid a kiss. "It's in the kitchen."

"I might be able to smell it already."

His grin was huge, which made Piper even more excited. She took his hand and led him down the hall, his gym bag still on the floor by the door. When they came into the kitchen, Sid's eyes were as large as his smile.

"Holy shit."

Piper clasped her hands together. "I got us enough to last us until we leave. We can pig out on it until your heart's content."

"I think you got us enough to last until Christmas" Sidney said with a laugh. He looked at all the plates and bowls of food, still steaming hot, arranged across the table. It was mounds of food, and it was all his favorites.

"I had to treat you" Piper said, anticipating any more opposition from him.

"You didn't have to do anything at all."

"I know." She smiled. "And I don't have to do this either, but I'm going to anyways." From behind her back, she held out two cone-shaped birthday hats, complete with elastic strings.

Sid had to bend forward to control his laughter. "What the hell?"

Piper slipped her paper cone on, wearing the bright yellow and red hat quite well. "You're doing it, Crosby!"

"I'm NOT."

"It's just us! Who's going to see you? Here." She handed him the hat, which Sid took reluctantly. Even when he slid it on over his dark hair and adjusted the strap around his chin, Piper couldn't stop giggling.

Despite his hesitation to don the silly hat, he still had a smile on his face the entire time. He held up both of his hands. "Well?"

"Amazing."

"Dorky."

"Amazingly dorky."

In one quick move, Sid pulled Piper into him until her hips hit his. The paper hat did nothing to detract from the intense look in his eyes as he gazed down at her. "Thank you for this."

"Thank Bailey. He doesn't even know he contributed the decorations."

Sid smiled. "Really? These are his?" He started to laugh, wrapping his other free arm around her waist. "God, you're the best. Now I have to meet the little guy."

Reaching up, Piper snapped the hat on his head, causing Sid to wince. "I've been waiting to do that all day." When she said this, she was strangely rewarded by an open-mouth kiss as intense as the look was in Sid's eyes. She was getting better at this: melting, but not puddling; going weak at his touch, but not collapsing. It would be her biggest feat if she managed an entire month without losing herself totally to this man.

When Sid pulled away, he watched Piper bite her lip. "What's that smile for?" he asked playfully.

"You're addicting....and I'm not ready to go to rehab yet."

Sid moved her face ever-so-slightly with his nose, his mouth coming in contact with her ear. "After all this? You're getting a double dose tonight."

Piper had to hold onto his shoulders so she wouldn't fall down. His breath on her neck was enough to make her was to throw every plate of food off the table and take him right there. His after-shower cologne mixed with just a hint of soap, the soft feel of his t-shirt, the thick neck her hands wrapped around as he went in for yet another deep kiss...Piper realized she was hungry, and it wasn't for Chinese food. This became very obvious the minute she felt Sidney's large hands slide down to cup her ass.

"You're lucky I have such amazing restraint" he whispered. A naughty smirk passed over his face. "And you're also lucky my stomach is growling."

Piper laughed. "Well then, let's enjoy dinner so we can finally get to dessert."

Sid patted her butt. "I like that idea."

*

The plates of food had a serious dent made in them, but there was no way the two of them could do any more damage than they already had.

They sat back, patting their bellies and groaning over the volume of food they'd just ingested. Since they were seated next to one another, all they had to do was swivel their heads to look at one another. When they did, they both sighed.

"There goes all those calories I burned today" Sid replied. He ran a hand over his face and into his hair. "Fuck that was good though."

"Too good, honestly." Piper reached for her water, but couldn't grab it without sitting up. She made no motion to bother getting up to get it, laughing the entire time. Sid took one for the team by sitting up and grabbing her glass of water.

"Lazy bum."

"Sorry - I am so full. You're going to have to roll me over to the couch or wherever we're going next."

Sid chuckled. "I'll carry you, how does that sound?"

"Sounds a bit better than rolling." She glanced over. "Can I tell you something?"

"Always." Sid smiled; it was fast becoming their little phrase they used whenever they knew what was coming was going to be good.

"I know it's only Wednesday, but this has been an amazing week" she said. "Between having a total day off to do nothing, to watching you skate, to cooking breakfast for one another, to ordering in..." She moved her eyes over to the table and groaned. "Maybe I shouldn't include ordering in..."

"I think you should!" Sid knocked her gently in the shoulder. "Besides. You left a few things out."

"Oh, I did?"

"You forgot our shower together." He gave her a wink. "You also forgot the foot rub I gave you."

Piper sighed blissfully. "That was SO good, Sid."

"I know, I saw the look on your face as you fell asleep."

She quickly turned her head, her eyes meeting his. "What did I look like?" She didn't like the smirk he was wearing when she asked the question.

"Kind of like...." He moved his eyes upwards as he tried to think. "Kind of like a mix between a happy little doll and a soft cuddly kitty."

"A soft..."

"...cuddly kitty, yes, I said it."

They looked at one another and Sid blew a raspberry as he began to crack up. "Okay yeah, I'm sorry, that was terrible--"

Piper shook her head. Whatever she was feeling for this man was growing; she knew it, she could feel it. She felt it at that moment, too. For whatever reason, when she watched Sid as he let his guard down and showed her his silly side - the side she liked to think very few else got to see - she felt her heart knocking on the door to her head and telling it to be prepared for a wild ride.

"Sid?"

He pressed his lips together to keep from laughing again. "Yes?"

"I'm really falling for you."

"I know you are."

Piper felt nervous. "Like.....hard, Sid."

He nodded, his eyes never showing any sign of wavering. "I'm falling for you too, Piper."

They reached for one another's hand, and when Sid grasped hers...he kissed it. "And I'm falling just as hard."

"What do we do?"

"Not sure." He facially shrugged, the corner of his mouth lifting glumly. "Maybe nothing right now."

Their eyes remained locked on each other's while Sid's thumb caressed Piper's hand. He wanted to give her something more than that, but he couldn't. He didn't know what to tell her. If he took a minute to look at their situation, it was only going to get more difficult as time went on. He'd be farther from her and busier than he was now. Because of this, so much would need to be discussed in the coming weeks, but he didn't want to even think about that right now.

Neither did Piper, who finally mustered the energy to stand up for the first time after dinner. Her hand squeezed around Sid's. "Come on. Let's clean up and move this party upstairs."

Later...after they'd finished the dishes and packing up all the leftovers...they changed and laid down together. Instead of engaging in the naughty things they teased one another with earlier in the night, they simply lay together...just as they had on Piper's first night of her week-long visit.

Sid took the outside spoon, bringing Piper's hips back into his. His arm kept her close, his nose softly dragging along the curve of her neck to plant a single kiss there. "Thank you for the birthday surprise" he whispered.

Piper closed her eyes. "You're welcome."

6-28-14 ** A NOTE TO MY READERS **

As a result of James getting traded, I've found myself at a loss for words; a loss I'm not sure I'll be quick to recover from. The trade was a hard hit, and it will take some time for me to get over the initial hurt.

I wanted to post a message to at least tell all of you who have followed my stories up to this point that after this, I'm not sure how long it's going to be before I post a new story. James will forever be a Penguin to me, and likely to many of you as well. I'm just not sure how to go forward right now. As a result - I can't promise I'll be back, but I hope to be. I really do.

Let's let the dust settle and the hurt fade...and maybe we'll find one other again on this wonderful site.

Thank you all again for your support...It really has made writing so much fun for me, and I don't want to go forward with another story until it's fun again. Right now - that doesn't seem plausible.

I'll leave it open for any of you to message me anytime, if you'd like. I will occasionally check in just to see how everyone's doing. :-)

Regards,
Winter
