In Your Eyes

Seventeen

Sid shoved his dirty gear into his bag and placed guards over the blades of his skates. With a stick positioned over one shoulder and his skates hanging off the end, he headed over to the office where Andy was working. He was likely going over clients he would be overseeing into the fall; NHL prospects from the league that needed that extra edge to their game over the several months. It's what Andy immersed himself in at the end of each summer before he flew back to his main office in Calgary.

Of course, having known Andy for as long as he'd been playing hockey, Sid found him doing exactly that. He was tapping the end of his pen on the desk where he sat, his head propped on one hand as he read through a list of clients a mile long.

He knocked gently, hoping he wouldn't be disturbing his trainer too much. Andy looked up from the papers in front of him, his face temporarily breaking from its seriousness. "Hey! What's up?"

"Got a sec?"

"Yeah, yeah, come in Sid." He waved him in, tapping the stack of papers on the desk before setting them to the side.

Because he was carrying just about everything he owned that had previously been stored in a locker, Sid couldn't exactly take a seat. He remained standing, holding onto the stick in his right hand, even as Andy began to chuckle.

"You moving out or something?"

Sid facially shrugged. "I guess you could say I am...in a way."

Andy frowned, confusion seeping into his confident stance. "To Pitt? So soon?"

"Yeah, actually….I, uh….I might be making a pit-stop in Maine again." Sid held Andy's stare, watching as he slowly nodded, information still being absorbed.

"Maine. I see."

Sid's smile was modest, but it gave Andy exactly what he needed to realize that this time, it wasn't for a vacation. "So I think I'm going to take the last week of training off to--"

Andy started to laugh. He laughed so hard that he leaned back in his wooden chair as far as it would go, one hand going to his chest. Sid stood there perplexed.

When Andy finally stopped laughing, he sat forward, shaking his head. "Ahhh, Sid….that's funny."

"What is?"

"You? Taking a week off of training?" Andy's eyes were rife with humor. "You're joking, right?"

"No." Sid watched calmly as it finally began to sink in that he was, in fact, very serious. "I know it's probably hard to understand right now, but I just have to do this."

Now Andy's jaw set and his lips pursed. "So that's it? Just gonna up and leave and completely disregard the last week?"

Sidney knew it was unheard of; he'd never done it before in his life as a client of Andy's.

I guess there's a first time for everything.

"Is it the girl?" Andy asked.

The girl. Sid sighed. Maybe he hadn't been good as good at keeping it a secret from Andy as he thought. "Yes."

"Who is she?"

"Someone I met at Nealer's wedding."

"And does she realize what she's getting into?"

Sid knew Andy meant to ask the question with the best of intentions, but every time he heard that line, his heart sunk a little.

When he didn't answer, Andy had his answer. He relaxed against the back of his chair, nodding as he and Sid stared at one another. "Well I wish you the best of luck. If she makes you happy enough to ditch--"

"--I'm not ditching anything, Andy." Sid's jaw was the one to set now. "I have to live a little, right? I deserve a little time off?"

"Not unless you want your game to suffer."

"After one week?" Sid glowered in disgust. "Come on Andy."

He shrugged from his chair. "Up to you, Kid."

"See, that's the thing - I'm not a kid anymore." He turned to leave, lifting the bag of gear onto his shoulder. Before he left, he met the eyes of one of his best friends and a person he knew and trusted more than most. "She really does make me happy. I know what I'm doing."

Andy smiled. "I trust you."

"Do you?"

"I do."

This relaxed Sid a little, because he trusted Andy as well. They'd known each other too long to pretend otherwise.

"I'll be in touch in a couple weeks, okay?"

Andy nodded. "And I'll be there."

When Sid finally exited the office, that last line Andy gave him lingered on in his mind. It was as if he implied that he would be there when Piper wasn't.

But Piper would be there. He was doing this for her. He was changing, little by little….and to his surprise - he liked the way it felt.

* * *

"Piper, look!"

She hardly heard her brother's tiny voice yelling to her over the sound of the waves and the wind blowing off the water. She was walking along the rocky shore, quietly absorbing the late day sunshine that reflected off the water like moving diamonds. Seagulls circled high above, searching for dinner in the tidal pools.

When Bailey called her again, she turned as saw him waving her over to a small tidal pool where he was bent over. Hopping from one polished round rock to the next, Piper made her way over to where Bailey was. She bent at the knees, peering down into the small pool. "Whatchya got?"

"Check this out." Bailey reached into the pool and pulled out a giant piece of waxy seaweed. The long olive green segments had small nodules of air attached, wet and slimy from its life in the sea. Bailey proceeded to pinch them, giggling as they made a popping noise and bits of salt water sprayed in Piper's direction.

"Ew, Bailey!"

The young boy began to laugh, attacking his sister by popping the air pockets of the seaweed, squirting her as both their laughing voices rose up above the sound of the waves around them.

"You little dork!" Piper said, wiping drops of water off her face happily. "Thanks a lot."

Bailey smiled, holding the lump of water plant in his hands. "You're welcome."

Piper smiled, peeling back the pieces of her hair that continued to flutter against her cheeks and neck. Now would have been a great time to have a hair tie, but she left one in the car which was half a mile away.

She sat back against a rock behind her, watching as Bailey hopped over to another tidal pool, reaching in for another handful of seaweed that had drifted on shore. Resting her head back against the cool stone, she closed her eyes and let the sunshine wash over her. There was just a bit of chill in the air from the breeze, but Piper didn't think a late afternoon could get any better than this.

That was, until her cell phone trilled in the pocket of her jeans.

Lifting it out, she saw the name and her heart fluttered. "Sid!"

"How's my girl?"

She closed her eyes and let those words sink in. "I'm good. How's my boy?"

"I'm going to be doing much better if you say yes."

"Say yes?" Piper smiled, slightly intrigued. "Say yes to what?"

"To me coming to visit you tomorrow."

Her jaw dropped, and a piece of her hair promptly fluttered into it. She spat it out, pulling it back and trying to hold it there with her free hand. "Tomorrow?!? Don't you have practice?"

"I did, but I took the last week off."

"What!?!?" Piper started to laugh out of the sheer surprise of it all. "Wait - you took it off……for me?"

"Yep."

The wind lifted Bailey's voice into the air. Piper glanced over to see him waving again. "Hang on, bud! One sec!" She moved the phone back to her cheek. "Sorry - if you can't tell by the noise already, I'm at the shore."

"I thought that noise in the background was just your heavy breathing about me coming to visit."

Piper laughed. "I save the heavy breathing for when we're together, stud."

"Can we be together tomorrow?"

His voice was soft; just barely audible from the wind and waves. In a strange way, Piper could feel Sid asking her the question. He was on the other line, but in her mind his nose was pressed to her ear and his breath tickled the sensitive spot on the back of her neck where he liked to nibble. It was stupid how quickly she melted because of him. Even just his voice made her body come alive.

"Yes" she said finally. "Yes of course - the sooner the better."

He breathed a sigh of relief. "Great. I already have everything packed and it would have been a real pain to unpack it all."

"Oh, well then we can't have that happen" Piper quipped. "And guess what?"

"What?" His voice seemed to perk up even more.

"We hired another girl to help at my studio." She waited, listening as the muffled sound of clapping was heard in the background.

"Round of applause! That's going to ease your mind so much coming up."

"I know! I'm pretty excited. She seems really cool and should fit in well with Danika and Amy." Piper's eyes drifted over to where Bailey was, noticing he was walking farther and farther from where she sat. "Hey babe?"

"Yeah?"

"My brother might pretend he's turned into a dolphin and swim away with all his watery friends if I don't catch up to him."

Sid began to laugh. "Don't you just love siblings?"

"Sometimes" she replied, standing up.

"I can't wait to meet him."

Piper could hear the smile in his voice. An image of Sid's perfect mouth crinkling at one corner flashed through her mind. "I haven't even told him yet. Should I surprise him?" she asked, stepping over the stones one at a time towards Bailey.

"Yeah, let's surprise him."

Stopping on one of the larger stones, Piper turned away from the wind. Her hair fluttered about her face, providing a curtain against the breeze. "Why are you doing all of this?"

"Isn't it obvious?"

Yes, but I want to hear it anyways because I still think this is a dream. is what she thought. "Yes" is what she said.

"If you don't, I'm more than willing to prove it to you over...and over...and over...."

Piper had to place a hand over her eyes and mouth to keep herself from letting out some sort of odd squeal from the horniness that blossomed inside her. The more Sid told her the things he planned to do to her, the more her brother's safety was at risk. If all her blood was shooting south to happier places, she'd never be able to save him if she needed to.

"You're such a tease" she said, biting her lip. "A great big muscular, talented, gorgeous fucking tease."

"You love it. I'll get you to admit that when I'm there."

Fuckmefuckmefuckme.

"Piper!"

She turned and saw Bailey now moving her direction, which eased her greatly. "Okay, I gotta run. Really."

"I'm not done with you, you know."

That made her shudder. Her whole body felt the dominance in Sid's voice when he said that. "I don't want you to be" she replied, forcing the air out of her lungs. There was too much she wanted to throw back at him, like how she wanted to ride him and mark his perfectly tan skin up with her nails and imprint the smooth skin of his neck with her teeth. "You sure have a way of distracting me."

"Call me later when you have more time and I'll do just that."

"Is that an order?" She asked with a grin.

"You know it is."

Another shudder came over her, this time igniting a spark in her most sensitive of spots. "Then I'll be speaking to you later, then."

"Til then, baby."

They hung up just in time since Piper and Bailey met in the middle with a single large rock between them. She stared at her little brother; his eyes wide and just a hint on the mischievous side.

"What's in your hand?" she asked him.

"Nothing." He gave her that guilty smile Piper knew all too well.

"It's not another--"

She couldn't finish the sentence before Bailey was squirting more salt water in her direction from more of the seaweed bubbles. She shrieked happily, covering her face as her brother kept squirting her, his giggle full of joy. Stone by stone, Piper stepped away as Bailey hopped after her.

It went on like this all the way back to where the stones ended and faded into a mix of dark and light colored sand. They both sat down with a heavy plop, not caring that their bottoms were damp from the sand.

"Come here" Piper said, slightly out of breath. She wrapped an arm around Bailey's neck and pulled him into her, giving him a big hug. "Thank you."

"For what?" Bailey moved from the hug, patting down his hair where Piper had mussed it up.

"For being cool."

"Cool!?"

She nodded. "I'm lucky to have a brother like you."

Bailey smiled, understanding now what she meant. "Thanks."

"Really." She looked out at the ocean, exhaling contently. "I'm lucky to be surrounded by really good boys in my life."

James dropped the keys in the spot he always did on his counter, inhaling deep. "Welcome home!" He turned and helped Ali with the suitcases she was dragging inside from the garage.

"Three more, mister" she said, nodding towards their car.

While he went out to retrieve the rest of their belongings, Ali stared around at the empty kitchen of their Pittsburgh home, enjoying the familiar sight for the first time in a few months. She was happy to be back home.

"Grab this?" James asked, his tall frame ducking slightly as he came through the doorway. "I got the rest."

He transferred two more suitcases and Ali took them upstairs. She could still hear James making noise downstairs, even as she went into their bedroom and opened up the windows. It definitely smelled like a house that had been locked up during the hottest and muggiest months of the summer, so the afternoon breeze was needed.

Leaning over the open window ledge, Ali watched James as he continued unloading the SUV, box by box, bag by bag. His white t-shirt complimented his summer tan, while the bright red mesh shorts he wore were somehow barely clinging to his waist. It gave Ali a small peek at the black band of his boxer briefs hidden beneath. A tiny, happy sigh escaped her mouth.

When James disappeared into the house again, she let her eyes wander over the neighborhood. Lush, well-manicured lawns flowed from red brick houses, similar in shape and design to their own. Not much changed since they'd been at the cabin, but it was nice to gaze out at a familiar scene with fresh eyes.

The sound of someone yelling across the street grabbed her attention. To her pleasant surprise, that voice belong to Paul Martin - who was also back in town.

James trotted halfway over to his house, yelling some sort of chirp at him. She smiled when she heard Paulie's laughter. She tried to lean out of the window to wave, hoping it would grab his attention.

It did. Paulie waved back as both men started to walk towards the house. "Hey Ali!"

"Long time no see!" With that, she turned and went back downstairs to meet up with him and James. They met in a big hug; the tall defensemen's arms wrapping around her smaller frame.

"So good to see you guys" Paulie said, hugging her. "You look great as always."

Ali smiled. "So do you. You're not so pale! Crazy!" Paul and James both laughed, even as Ali nudged him. "Kidding of course."

"No you're not, and that's okay." The short beard of bright blonde hair around his mouth moved as he smiled at her. "So how was it?"

"Amazing" James answered, turning towards the house. "You really gotta get up there, Paulie."

The three of them walked back to the house, leaving the door open as they stepped inside. James and Paul continued talking about boy-stuff: cabin construction, boating, boozing….while Ali listened happily at the island in their kitchen. Now and then she'd chime in, but it was all boy-talk, and she knew how excited James was to talk about it with Paul.

When it came to the point of who came for the weekend on the water there, Paul listened with wide eyes as James ran through the list of guys who came, especially when he mentioned Sid.

"Sid came?" He nodded. "Damn. Good for him."

"Came all the way from Halifax" Ali replied. Her eyes shifted sideways, catching James' matching expression. "And he came with his girlfriend."

Paul's face never moved, but his eyes did. They moved from Ali, to James, and then back to Ali. "You're kidding, right."

"Not at all." Ali grinned at James. He was watching Paul for his reaction to the news, waiting for the moment it sunk in.

"Serious, Paulie."

"I can see that." His eyebrows remained lifted. "Sooo…….."

"They met at our wedding."

"No shit?"

Ali nodded. "AND they're kind of going public with it…." She moved her head a little. "Well, little by little they are, anyways."

James leaned over his forearms on the granite countertop. "Our boy is becoming a man, Paulie." He feigned a fake tear falling down his cheek. "He's growing up….so fast…."

Ali knocked him in the bicep. "Oh stop." She kissed his cheek when he leaned into her.

"So it must be pretty serious then?" Paul asked. "Because, I mean…….it's Sid."

"Oh it's serious, alright."

Paul looked to Ali then, who nodded in agreement. "Well damn. Good for him! What's he gonna do in a week when he has to move back here?"

All three of them looked at one another silently. They remained silent, because neither Ali nor James could guess, and Paul was even more clueless than they were.

James shrugged, pushing back off the counter. "Guess we'll have to wait and see, eh?"

As the guys transitioned into more hockey talk and pre-season stuff, Ali politely removed herself from all the chatter about stuff she didn't understand. She went back upstairs to unpack, realizing just how ridiculous a task it was going to be. Staring at the boxes in the hallway and the suitcases of clothes in the bedroom, it may take more than one evening to accomplish.

In time, as she hung up her and James' clothes, she heard Paulie shout a goodbye up the stairs and she shouted one in return. The minute she heard the front door close, the bounding steps of James' long stride followed. He appeared in the room as Ali was hanging stuff up in the closet.

"Excited to be back, babe?"

She looked up at him and smiled. "Of course! Home sweet home, right?"

James fell back on the bed, removing his hat to reveal a mop of wavy, dark brown hair. "It is kinda nice. I like this bed better."

"Is the cabin bed not as comfortable?" Ali picked up a dress from her suitcase. "We can fix that, you know."

"No, no, it's comfy enough."

Their eyes met and James barely lifted one of his sharp eyebrows.

Ali laughed. "Jesus, James."

"Come on! Memories have been made here!" He patted the spot next to him. "Am I wrong?"

She couldn't hold back the smirk that was dying to appear. "Nope."

Tossing the dress back into the pile, she climbed up onto the bed beside him and rolled onto her side. Propping her head on one hand, she stared into the blue-green eyes of her husband. "Just think of all the new memories here."

James turned his head to look at her. "First full season here as a married couple."

"I know." Ali saw the bluer shades of his eyes brighten beneath his long lashes. "First of many seasons."

He lifted a hand to caress her cheek. "I love you so much."

"You're just horny."

"Well yeah, but I do love you."

Ali giggled. "I know you do, babe." She leaned forward and felt James' soft mouth press against hers. She let him lead, giving him just enough of her tongue to feel the warmth of his. "Love you too."

They parted, but their eyes remained locked on one another. James took on the appearance that he was thinking of something, but Ali wasn't sure what. His expressions were so obvious most of the time: his smile was huge, his eyes changed colors, his brow furrowed deeply and the corners of his mouth turned downwards whenever he was especially confused.

Now though, Ali couldn't tell what he was thinking.

"What's going on inside that mind of yours?"

He pursed his lips together, shaking his head. "Nothing. Just admiring beauty at its finest."

The smile that followed told Ali he was covering. "Well thank you, but really…is something wrong?"

"What makes you think something must be wrong if I'm quiet?"

Fair enough. Ali retracted. "Okay, so…what are you thinking right now? Because I know you are. I know you too well."

James' eyes shifted upwards, meeting hers. There was a moment's hesitation before he answered. "Just thinking about the coming year. What's ahead for us, you know. Stuff like that."

Ali thought about what he said while she drug her fingernails lightly along his arm. "Well that's not so bad."

"No." He wet his lips with his tongue, his gaze returning to the ceiling. "Guess I'm still shocked by all the good going on."

"Shocked?" Ali chuckled softly. "Babe, you're allowed to be happy."

"I know, I know."

"So just enjoy it then." She tickled his chin, feeling his stubble against her fingers. His eyes moved towards her again as a very subtle smile appeared.

"You're good to me."

"Well you're cute, so…."

His smile grew to a grin. "I guess I feel kind of bad."

Ali shook her head. "You're nuts."

"I might be."

"Too many spills into the boards."

"That might also be true." His eyes stayed on her. "But what I mean is - I feel bad I asked you about having a baby."

Ali's fingers stopped moving. "You don't want one now?"

James took her hand and kissed it. "That's not what I said. I said I feel bad I asked you about it. I got greedy."

She blinked once, sifting through both James' words and his emotion to find the real answer. "Well, okay, but….I was kind of getting into the idea of maybe having a baby. Kind of. Maybe."

With a laugh, James rolled over so he, too, was on his side. His hand lifted to her face, cupping her jaw. "We're not in a hurry here, and I'm sorry if I made you think I wanted one right now."

He kissed her, the strength of his hand assisting his mouth as he pulled her into the kiss. Ali's mind was still running, running, running, despite how amazing James' kiss was and how desperately she wanted to get lost in it. Just as she'd told James he was allowed to be happy, she allowed herself to forget her confusion and just enjoy the moment with him.

"Mommy, we're home!"

Piper was second to enter her parent's home as Bailey went streaking through the living room and straight into April's arms.

"Hey there little sugar!" April hugged the back of Bailey's head, wiping away a bit of the hair that had fallen in his eyes. "How was it?"

"Great! I got Piper good a couple times with seaweed water."

Piper was smirking at her mother as she brought his little red ball hat and his water shoes in. "He got me good, alright."

April pressed her nose into her son's hair, inhaling and then making a sour face. "First things first!" She pointed her finger towards the back of the house. "Bath."

"Really!?" The boy's shoulders slumped.

"You smell like a fish."

"A dead fish" Piper added, holding back a laugh.

"Fiiiinnnneee."

Bailey turned, his bare feet stomping off down the hall. Both of the women watched, listened, and then smiled when they heard the water running. April flashed a grin at her daughter. "I raised one of you right."

"Hey!!" Piper laughed, her mouth remaining open. "I resent that!"

April kissed her on the cheek. "I kid, hun. I kid." She took a seat in one of the love seats positioned in the living room. Piper followed by cozying up on the couch, tucking her legs up under her.

"So I have a secret and you can't tell anyone" she told her mom. "Promise you won't say a word to Bail."

The fair face of her mom, her cheeks kissed by just a few soft freckles, twisted with curiosity. "Okaaaay…."

"Sidney's coming to visit tomorrow, and he wants to meet him." She bit her bottom lip while smiling. Even more thrill seeped into her when she saw the look that transformed her mother's face.

"Get out." She gasped. "Does that mean--"

"--Yes, I want him to meet you and daddy, too."

"Don't you think it's a little soon?" April asked. "I mean, I'm not telling you what you can and cannot do here, I just…..I don't know."

Everything about her and Sid's dating had seemingly been pushed on fast-forward, but after having talked with Ali and heard some of her story with James, she realized part of it was because of the lifestyle. You had to move at the pace of these guys or you were left behind.

The other part, of course, was simply just because she was falling for Sid, and…she believed…he was falling for her just as quickly.

"So I may call you and pretend to surprise you with Sid - but this is your only warning" Piper said, knowing her mother all too well. "Thought maybe you might want to start cleaning now."

The reaction was as she expected. Her mom rolled her eyes, which was promptly followed by her cheerful smile. "Thanks, love." After the the revelation that Sid was returning to Bar Harbor, April felt better that the man Piper was clearly smitten by was making an effort to come see her. She worried her daughter would get caught in the trap of sacrificing too much, and getting little in return. She watched Piper grow up to be an incredibly responsible, dependable, beautiful woman; one that she was quite proud of. She saw her ex boyfriends come and go, disappointing her time and time again.

She didn't know much about Sidney Crosby other than his stardom that everyone knew. But she knew her daughter - and Piper was clearly falling in love with him.

And it made her happy to see it.

* * *

That night, long after she and Sid had finished their phone conversation, Piper sat down at her Macbook and began to make a music playlist. On that playlist were a variety of songs that she wanted to make sure Sidney got to hear. If he didn't hear them all on this particular visit, she was going to send him off with the cd so he could take a piece of her back with him. And maybe, just maybe, try changing his taste in music ever-so-slightly.

Piper put a few of her go-to artists on the list; some slow groove songs, others with a much tighter beat, and others still that had more of an acoustic sound to them. It made her happy to put the list together. After listening to snippets of some songs and deciding whether they should go on the cd or not, she could almost picture Sid listening to some of them, driving around during his last week in Nova Scotia, or even when he got back to Pittsburgh.

Not sure if it would go against some of his crazy rituals, but he might even listen to a few of these on the way to one of his games, she thought with a smile. Glancing outside her bedroom window, Piper took in the full moon that shed clear light down through the pines that stood tall and dark outside. The notes of one of her favorite songs played softly from the small speakers; a makeshift soundtrack to the still night she was spending alone and awake at her computer. It was a cover of a Peter Gabriel song, but done in such a romantic, mysterious fashion that it was like a whole new track to her. It fit the mood she was in, and it fit the comfortable tranquility she felt at that moment. The lyrics were lyrics she'd heard a thousand times, but with the anticipation of Sidney arriving the next day and whatever lay ahead of them in the future - the lyrics now took on a different meaning.

In your eyes
the light the heat
in your eyes
I am complete

As the chorus continued to play and Piper truly listened, she heard more than lyrics. She heard what could have been a song written for her and Sid.

I see the light and the heat
in your eyes
oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light
the heat I see in your eyes

Piper closed her own eyes and pictured Sid's intense stare, their dark brown color and their almond shape that angled downwards slightly at the corners. Anticipation welled up inside her, hardly wanting to go to sleep because she just wanted the next morning to come.

As the song drifted off into its final notes, Piper opened her eyes.

There was no doubt about it.
It was the one song she knew she just had to put it on the disk.

Notes

The version of this song that Piper was listening to actually exists! It's by an artist named BANKS, and the name...as you guessed... is "In Your Eyes". A fantastic cover, and well worth a listen. :)

6-28-14 ** A NOTE TO MY READERS **

As a result of James getting traded, I've found myself at a loss for words; a loss I'm not sure I'll be quick to recover from. The trade was a hard hit, and it will take some time for me to get over the initial hurt.

I wanted to post a message to at least tell all of you who have followed my stories up to this point that after this, I'm not sure how long it's going to be before I post a new story. James will forever be a Penguin to me, and likely to many of you as well. I'm just not sure how to go forward right now. As a result - I can't promise I'll be back, but I hope to be. I really do.

Let's let the dust settle and the hurt fade...and maybe we'll find one other again on this wonderful site.

Thank you all again for your support...It really has made writing so much fun for me, and I don't want to go forward with another story until it's fun again. Right now - that doesn't seem plausible.

I'll leave it open for any of you to message me anytime, if you'd like. I will occasionally check in just to see how everyone's doing. :-)

Regards,
Winter
