Redemption of a Puck Slut: Part II

July 9, 2014

July 9, 2014

Dear Diary,

There is an annoying beeping sound keeping me up. I’ve asked the nurse to make it go away, but she says she can’t, it’s my heart monitor or something. We are going to be here for at least another day (four total) and if I have to hear that beeping one more night I will murder someone.

My mom and Sid’s parents have finally left my side long enough for me to write this.

-

Three days ago on Monday, the seventh, Sid and I were at home going over some details for the wedding with the wedding planner. I started to feel light headed so I went upstairs to lie down and feel asleep immediately.

When Sid came up to check on me, he found me unconscious, bleeding. So he rushed me to the hospital.

I’m not really sure what happened next (because I was unconscious) but that night, at 8:42 and 8:46, Theodore Maxwell Crosby and Annie Zelda Crosby came into this world. (I would say that they were born, but I didn’t exactly give birth to them, because I was cut open and they were pulled out of me; sounds kind of gross). Because I was still unconscious, and they weren’t sure when I would wake up, Sid picked the names. I was very happy that he picked the two middle names I wanted.

Waking up the next day was hard. I didn’t know where I was or how I’d gotten there. However, the most confusing thing was seeing Sid next to me holding a baby, our baby (Annie to be specific).

“Sid?” I asked as I tried to sit up, but the pain in my abdomen stopped me.

“Hey, you’re awake,” he whispered with a smile. “You want to hold your little girl?”

I could tell he hadn’t slept that night, but he was still ridiculously happy.

“What?” I looked down at my stomach which had considerably reduced in size. “Is that…?”

“Yeah, this is Annie Zelda,” he smiled and handed her to me, and then helped me adjust my bed so I could sit up.

I was still very confused. “Are they Canadians?”

Sid laughed, “Yeah, they’re both Canadian.”

“But are they both? American-Canadian?” I asked, not really paying attention to Annie.

Sid looked at me slightly concerned, as if he wasn’t sure all of the medicine they’d given me had worn off, “We don’t need to worry about that now.”

“What happened? Where’s the other one?” I asked, finally looking down at Annie.

Sid laughed, “The other one. You mean Teddy? He’s with your mom.”

“My mom’s here?”

“Yeah, she and your brother came up last night, and my parents and Taylor are here too.”

My head was still swimming, but I tried to go over what he had just said. There was someone else I needed to tell, but I couldn’t remember who. Caeleigh, yes, but I didn’t need to do that right now.

“Can I see my phone?” I asked him.

He looked surprised, “Um, yeah I think it’s in here somewhere,” he started to go through my bag. “I had Taylor stop by our house and get some clothes and stuff for you, and I think she grabbed your phone too.”

He found it and handed it to me, in exchange for Annie, who started to cry. I froze. I was hearing my child cry for the first time.

“She’s probably hungry or something,” Sid said, not noticing my reaction. She’s hungry? Do I have to, like, feed her?

“I’ll go find her a bottle,” he said and left the room.

Now that I was alone, I started to cry, and I remembered who I needed to tell.

*I don’t know if you’ve heard yet, but the twins were born last night. I don’t know the details, I just woke up, but I’ll let you know when I find out more.*

He didn’t respond, so I put my phone on silent and waited for Sid to come back.

My mom came in shortly after, carrying Teddy. “Sid said you were awake, and I thought you’d want to see this guy.”

She handed him to me, and again, I wasn’t quite sure what to do. At least I was more awake this time. “What happened? I am so confused.”

“Sid didn’t tell you?” She asked as she sat down next to me. “Poor guy, he’s been under a lot of stress the past 24 hours.”

“24 hours? What time is it?” I tried to sit up, but again I was stopped.

“It’s almost…” My mom looked at her watch. “Oh, the twins are almost a day old.”

I immediately felt sad that I had missed the first day of my babies lives (not that they would care/notice), but then realized that I had actually missed the birth of my children.

I looked back up at my mom, tears threatening at the corners of my eyes again, “Mom, what happened?”

“You had pre-eclampsia, which is high blood pressure; it was most likely caused by stress,” she explained, looking like she might cry (again). “Sid brought found you unconscious and bleeding, and rushed you to the hospital. The bleeding was actually caused by something else, just some inflammation. But you were not responding to anything, so the doctors decided to do an emergency c-section, mostly because it would be easier to work on you once the twins were out. And they were both healthy, only a few days early. The doctors weren’t sure when you would wake up, so Sid named them, I hope you don’t mind.”

“And I’m okay now?”

“Yes, the doctor will probably be in shortly to check you out, but your blood pressure has returned to normal and everything else seems okay.”

The doctor came in and said pretty much the same thing my mom had. However, he said I would need to be here for a few days, having just had major abdominal surgery.

Over the past couple of days my mom, Cliff, Sid, his parents, and Taylor have taken turns sitting with me. They have been very helpful with the twins and stuff, and his mom showed me pictures from the c-section, but I kind of wanted to be alone.

Whenever I had a few minutes alone I would text Brandon and update him. I really wish he could be here, to see them. One of them is his after all.

That kept bothering me, not knowing which one was his and which was Sid’s. They both look the same, but all babies look the same at this age.

I finally decided to do something about it. I couldn’t get out of bed to do it myself, so I had to ask someone to do it for me.

“Cliff, can I ask you to do something for me?” I asked when it was his turn to sit with me.

“Yeah, what do you need?” He replied sitting up.

“This is kind of complicated, but I think you’re the only person I can trust with this.” I paused, and then explained the situation with Brandon and the paternity test

He raised his eyebrows in surprise a few times, but didn’t say anything negative or condescending.

After a minute, he replied, “Wow, that is an … interesting turn of events.”

“I know, it’s horrible, but please don’t tell anyone, especially not Sid.”

“So you want me to collect DNA samples from the twins, and Sid, without him noticing?”

“Yes, I know that sounds impossible, but it’s really important.”

He thought about it for a minute, “I think I have a plan. And this is a hospital, so they must have some of those cotton swab things that you see on CSI and stuff,” he looked around the room for some, and then got up and started going through the drawers and cabinets.

When Cliff was bored, he gets really into any kind of project you give him, so I didn’t doubt his ability to somehow stick a cotton swab inside Sid’s mouth without him noticing, or somehow make it seem normal.

“Can’t you just steal one of his hairs from his hairbrush or something?” he asked.

“No, it might work, but everything I’ve read online says it has to be the cells from the inside of the cheek, or a blood test, but that would be really hard to get. Trust me, I’ve done lots of research on this subject,” I replied with a laugh.

“I’m going to check the nurses’ station for some, the night nurse is never there so it’s often unattended,” he said as he left.

A few minutes after he left, my mom came in. “I’m going back to the hotel soon, but I thought I’d leave him with you,” she said handing me Teddy.

“Thank you,” I said, smiling down at him. “Do you know where Sid is?”

“He’s sleeping in the waiting room, do you want me to get him for you?”

“Yes, though I’m glad he finally got some sleep. He can sleep in here, this chair is probably more comfortable anyway,” I said, gesturing to the arm chair next to my bed.

As soon as she left, Cliff came back with three tubes, and in each tube was a long cotton swab. “Is this right?”

“Yes! That’s what they looked like the first time we did it. Okay, Sid will be here soon, and he’ll probably go back to sleep, if we wait a while, you can probably get it while he’s sleeping.”

Cliff left, and Sid came in and immediately fell back asleep, with his mouth open (perfect!). Fifteen minutes later, Cliff quietly came back. He had labeled each tube with a permanent marker so we wouldn’t get them mixed up. He poked Sid to see how asleep he was, but Sid didn’t even move. He very carefully put the cotton swab in Sid’s mouth rubbed it on the inside of his cheek.

“Just like in CSI,” he said, smiling, as he took it out and sealed it in the tube. He did the same thing to Teddy, who didn’t like it very much, but didn’t cry. “Now I need to find Annie.”

He left, and I looked down at my son. I was alone with him for the first time, so I decided to take a picture and send it to Brandon. I looked over at Sid to make sure he was still fast asleep, in case I got emotional.

Brandon hadn’t replied to any of my texts the last few days, and I’m kind of worried. Maybe he doesn’t want to hear about them? Or maybe he’s taking it harder than I thought. I wish I could see him somehow, but I think Sid and I will be stuck together all summer, and once the season starts Brandon won’t be too far away, but he probably won’t get many chances to drive/fly across Pennsylvania just to see me and his child.

I put my phone away just as his parents came in to see me.

“Oh, is he sleeping?” Trina asked quietly.

“Yeah, they both are,” I replied, smiling at my sleeping son and fiancé.

“Aww, this is too cute! I need a picture of this, Troy where’s my camera?” She turned to him.

“I think I left it in the car; I’ll get it,” he said as he left.

“So, have you two decided what you want them to call you?” I asked her. “I think my mom has already claimed Nana.”

She smiled, “Yes, she and I talked about it earlier. I think Troy and I are going to be Grandma and Grandpa, though we have a few years before they’ll start talking. What have you and Sid decided?”

“Growing up my parents were always Mama and Papa to me, but I don’t know. We’ll see what happens,” I smiled, but suddenly my brother burst through the door carrying Annie.

“I got it!” He said, holding up the three tubes, until he saw Trina, and he stuck them in his pocket. “Scavenger hunt,” he explained, and then left.

Trina gave me a questioning look and then laughed, “You’re brother’s a funny guy.”

“I know,” I said with a smile. Troy returned with the camera and they took a picture of sleeping Sid and I with Teddy.

“Taylor will be back in a couple of hours, but we’re going home to get some sleep. Call if you need anything!” She said as they left.

-

And now I am alone again, with my sleeping Sid, and my sleeping Teddy, and that stupid mother fucking beeping sound.

I’m going to have to not use that word any more now that I have children.

Wow, I’m a mom.

This is still not real.

Sincerely,

Emme
