Lost Girl
Surprised, Much?
Stepping out of his black SUV, Jake shut the door and locked the car, the beep ringing through the underground parking. Making his way to the elevator, Jake pulled his phone out of his pocket and unlocked the IPhone. Reaching the doors, he opened them and pressed the elevator's button, awaiting the doors to open. As they slid, Jake walked into the small area and pressed the ground floor. He began going through his instagram, scrolling past the photo’s of fellow hockey players, old friends, and his hook ups. Looking up as the beeping stopped, he slid his phone in his coat pocket and walked down the wide hall to Real Sports. Arriving to the store, he walked in the be met with the manager, Ron.
“Jake, hey! We have your mom’s orders. Just came in yesterday.” Ron spoke as he held out his hand for Jake to shake.
Taking his hand in his, Jake shook it and nodded. “Oh, great. Thanks, bud.” He told him as he followed Ron to the cash. Ron put two rather large boxes on the counter, and ripped off the receipt for Jake to sign. Handing it over to him, he began again.
“So, how’s life been, haven’t seen you come in here in a while.” He spoke, as images of her came to mind.
Last time he was at Real Sports was nine months ago, with his ex, Danielle. They were picking out a jersey’s for his family, while she was running around, putting random articles of clothing on, such as giant puck heads. It was one of the last time’s him and Danielle had fun together, before she decided to break it off.
Struggling to sign his name, more images of Danielle came into his mind, as his hand shook.
The way she woke him up in the morning, while wearing his clothes. The way he’d walk into the kitchen to smell bacon and waffles she had made. Her sweet kisses. Her blonde flowing hair. Her walk. The way she’d hold his hand in public, proud to show him off to everyone as hers. How she looked in a dress when they went out for dinner. He missed every bit about her, and everything reminded him of her.
Slamming down the pen, Jake grabbed the boxes, speaking under his breath. “I’ve gotta run.”
Walking quickly to the elevator, Jake hoped in as it arrived, and quickly hit the P1 button. His breathing became rigged as he felt tears spring to his eyes. He never usually was emotional about anything, even other relationships growing up, but Danielle was there with him for five years. Walking out of the elevator, Jake walked to his car, hotheaded, and opened the trunk, putting the boxes in and throwing down the back. He hopped into his car and started it, before hitting the wheel and clutching onto the black leather. He pressed his head to the wheel and yelled out in anger. Ever since the day Danielle told Jake she was moving to San Diego for business, he always kept the thought of them being able to still stay together in his head, that was until he found out she had a new boyfriend, some CEO for some hot shot company across California, slowly expanding over the United States. From then on, Jake never saw himself as someone being able to have someone accept him. He believed it was his fault for Danielle leaving, even after she’d told him it wasn’t and that things were just getting rough between them because of their distance. The breakup lead for Jake to spend endless nights drinking and bringing home a new girl every night. He craved to find the same ecstasy Danielle gave him, but nothing worked. He just needed to get rid of the endless pain.
Calming himself down, Jake pulled out of his parking spot and drove off to the exit and onto Bremner St. Driving to one of his favorite low key coffee spots, Jake turned on the radio, as music began to play one of the top 100’s in Canada. Pulling down a few more streets, Jake parked his car off the side of the road, and hopped out carefully. He locked the doors as he walked into the shop. The smell of coffee beans filled the air, a smell he loved. He walked up to the cashier while looking up at the board.
“Uh, I’ll have a large coffee, uhm Cinnamon roasted. Please.” He told the cashier as they nodded, getting his order. Taking his phone back out, he received a text from Morgan.
Morgan: Going to Ashley’s place, be back before dinner. We’ll grab some Domino’s?
Jake began typing away a reply,
Jake: Yeah sure man, see you soon.
The barista put Jake’s coffee order in front of him and rung it up.
“$1.25, please.” They said as he handed the girl a twoonie.
As she handed back his change, he put it in the tip jar and made his way out.
Arriving home to the empty condo, Jake put down the boxes on the counter so he could throw his empty coffee cup in the garbage. Picking them back up, he brought the boxes into his room and put them in the corner on the floor, for his mom’s arrival in a week. He made his way into the kitchen and grabbed himself a bag of goldfish crackers. He brought them into the living room and turned on the television. Flicking through the channels, he came across Happy Gilmore one of his favorite movies, which could cheer him up. Sitting with the bag on his stomach, he ate a few before dosing off.
Waking up slowly four hours later, he was awoken by an episode of House Hunters. He slowly sat up, and grabbed his phone. A text from Morgan came on the screen.
2 Minutes ago, Morgan: Coming home right now, picked up the pizza, Hawaiian okay?
Jake: Yeah, good job.
Deciding to check if there were any emails from Randy regarding the practice tomorrow morning, Jake checked through his emails to see there was no updates and that it was still on. Going through kore folders, he found an email from a travel agency with the subject, "Travel to Turks for less this March break!"
"Yeah right", he thought to himself before laughing about the boys on the team’s inside joke. They had always cracked jokes about some of the players wild night there, but some had never been themselves. A boys get away was needed soon, so he was sure to mention it to Morgan and a few other boys. Seeing there was no other emails, he checked his facebook to see nothing catching his eye. He had deleted all source of Danielle in his life because of the grieve it caused him. Sighing to himself slightly, he clicked on the next social media app he had, instagram. He began scrolling down, seeing Morgan posted a photo of one of Ashley’s mugs, with ironically was a Turks one. Jake began laughing to himself slightly, before going down his timeline more. He came across a photo of Ashley and Morgan together which she posted. The two were wearing over sized hoodies with their hoods on, throwing up gang signs. They looked totally stupid, but he was happy for the two young ones. He became curious of Ashley’s instagram and clicked on her profile. Scrolling past humorous photos regarding television shows and hockey posts, he came to see a selfie of Ashley and a familiar blonde. He quickly clicked the photo, coming face to face with a photo of Ashley and the girl. The girl he grew mesmerized by in the street. His eyes grew wide as he saw the caption which followed;
'Out with my cousin for a girls night, getting turnt up! #weactuallyjustwatchedmoviesalldaylol'
