Training Miller
Chapter Seventeen
It was a pretty slow day at work so I decided to go watch the practice. I sat a couple rows up from the glass, paying attention for a while before checking the twitter account Beau convinced me to get. He told me to keep it private, because crazy girls would be harassing me.. Which they did anyway. I had a mass amount of follow requests from people I didn't know.
I almost dropped my phone when Dan hit one of the pucks off the glass right in front of me.
"Asshole," I mumbled as some of the guys laughed at my reaction.
Not too long after, Dupuis was limping down the stairs to sit by me.
"I don't think you should be doing that," I raised an eyebrow, knowing very well that he wouldn't listen to my advice.
"Hey the doctor said crutches weren't mandatory until after surgery," He nudged me with his elbow, "So how was the concert last night?"
"Amazing. I wish Beau could've gone though."
"Yeah. He was too busy bothering the rest of us," I knitted my eyebrows together, not understanding the man sitting next to me, "Don't even try to ask because we aren't allowed to tell you."
"Wait, what?"
"I think that's my cue to go," He stood up, favoring one leg, "I'll see you after my surgery."
Practice ended and I went back to my office, hoping that people would be able to do everything alone. They're grown men. I don't see why they couldn't do that. I pushed open the door, wondering why it wasn't locked. I looked up to see Beau's shining smile and him holding a pair of hockey skates in one hand and a bag in the other.
"You know I got cleared yesterday," he stepped closer to me and set down the bag, "And we've never gone skating together."
"What are you getting at Beau?" I looked up into his blue eyes, hoping that they would hold some sort of hint.
"I'm saying that these skates are your size and so are the clothes in that bag and I will pick you up at 5:30," he gave me a quick peck on the cheek before leaving me alone. It seemed like he had a big night planned and I was really excited.
I got home and took a shower. After, I just laid around in my towel before decided what to do with my hair. Right around five, I decided that it would be a good idea to get dressed. I brought the bag to my room and starting taking out the contents.
The first thing was a black and white plaid scarf, probably the softest material I've felt before. Wrapped up inside it was a new set of earrings. Pearl earrings to be specific. They matched the necklace my grandma gave me for granduation a few years back. The final item was a dress. It was black with a white floral print. It looked like something you would have found in the 50's and Beau could not have picked anything better.
"Hey babe I'm here," I heard Beau close the door and take a few steps into my apartment.
"Okay I'll be right out," I slipped on a pair of black flats and grabbed my peacoat from the back of my door, "Do I look okay?"
Beau looked up from his phone and stared at me, not saying a word. I walked closer to him, pressing my lips to his.
"You look absolutely stunning."
"You look pretty handsome yourself. You did great with the outfit."
"I had the help of the team.. And Dan. He said that I couldn't go wrong with this."
"And it's perfect, Beau. Where are we going first?"
"To dinner," He opened the door and I locked it before heading to the elevator with him.
Beau stuck my skates in the car with his. I thought we were driving to the restaurant, but I guess we were walking. I didn't mind though. It was a bit chilly, but nothing worse than an Iowa winter. I could tell Beau was cold, so I hooked my arm with his and cuddled up next to him. He responded by planting a kiss on the top of my head.
I didn't even know what we were doing, but tonight was already perfect. We never had the chance to do anything like this and it made it that much more special.
"Here we are," he opened the door and I stepped inside the small steak house.
When my boyfriend got his steak and covered it in some sort of sauce, I stared at him in horror.
"What?" He asked.
"You can't just order a steak so that it's pretty much burnt and then smother it in steak sauce. You just can't," Beau laughed at me and shook his head.
"I'm sorry I don't like my food mooing when it's sitting on my plate," I rolled my eyes and cut a piece of my steak to hold up.
"Look at that. There's hardly any red. It's still juicy and still amazing without it being cold and red."
He sighed, defeated, before laughing to himself, "Please never change."
After dinner, we made our way back to his car to pick up the skates before walking to the outdoor rink that was close by.
I walked through the gate to see hundreds of twinkling lights all over and not a single person.
"This is amazing, how did you manage this?"
"Well, when you're a part of the Penguins, you get some special treatment."
"So Sid set this up?"
"Bingo," he knelt down to tie my skates before doing his own and helping me to the rink.
Like every other time I go skating, I was attached to his arm. He held me steady as I got my rhythm going and pretty soon, I was able to glide along only holding onto Beau's hand.
"This is perfect, babe. Thanks for planning this out."
"It's my pleasure."
We skated for what seemed like hours, but we decided to leave after the tenth time I ended up on my ass. I thought we would be going back to my place, but Beau convinced me to go to his house.
I used my own key to open the door and saw candles everywhere. There was no way this was safe. I opened my mouth to say something, but Beau cut me off before I could.
"I texted Rob when we got off the ice and had him light all these before leaving for the night," I looked at him, not sure what to say. He had gone through all of this effort just for one night.
"Beau tonight seriously has been perfect. I love you," I threw my arms around his neck.
"I love you," he told me before going to the kitchen and coming back with a bottle of wine and two glasses.
"Okay. Now you're just trying to get laid."
"You caught me."
We were sitting on his bed, just talking and drinking. That's what I loved about being with Beau. He could make me feel better about myself during the day, like I was beautiful and he had to show me off to absolutely everyone and anyone. But right now, he makes me feel the most wanted. Even if I looked like I should be going to bed soon.
"I feel like I should be wearing something sexier right now."
"You look better in my t-shirts than I do and I think that's pretty damn sexy," I tried smiling but was so tired, a yawn came out instead, "I think it's time for Drew to get some sleep."
I nodded in agreement and started getting under the covers while he turned out the lights. When he finally got in bed, I snuggled into his chest.
"I'm sorry you didn't get laid tonight," he started laughing.
"I had an amazing time tonight, Drew. I'll survive."
"Yeah, but I might not."
"Goodnight babe. I love you."
The next morning, I got up and made breakfast for the two of us. I knew that Beau didn't plan on it because he could cook just about as well as I could play hockey.
"You're going to make a great wife some day," Beau's arms wrapped around my waist as he rested his chin on my shoulder.
"That's a few years down the road, but I like to think so."
It seemed like a majority of the people I graduated high school with were having children and getting married. Which that's great for them, but I feel like there's still so much to do before settling down and I think Beau had the same idea. Besides, neither of us were even 25 yet. We still had a while.
"So I was thinking about the Olympic break.."
"Oh yeah! I forgot to tell you. I'm going to Russia with Patrick," Beau's smile slowly faded and he started shoving food in his mouth, "Well, I'm traveling with him. I'll be staying with my aunt."
He didn't say anything for a few minutes and wouldn't meet my gaze.
"Beau, what's wrong?"
"I just kinda wanted to go somewhere with you.."
I sighed. I wanted to do something with Beau but when Pat offered to pay for my trip over there, I couldn't turn it down.
"I know.. I just.. We'll go somewhere over the summer, okay? Then we don't have to worry about your wrist or getting back to work. It'll be better than Sochi."
"I can't believe you're going to the Olympics without me," the corner of his mouth tilter into a smirk and it made me feel better about leaving my boyfriend for two weeks.
"Yeah well maybe in four years you'll be playing in the Olympics," I could hear my phone going off in his bedroom, "I should probably get that."
I padded off to get my phone. I checked the screen, but I didn't know the number.
"Hello?"
"Drew, this is Chris Kunitz."
"Hey Kuni, what's up?"
"I know this is short notice, but would you be able to watch Zach and Payton?"
"Um. Yeah. Of course. I'm actually at Beau's house right now but you can drop them off," I was standing in front of Beau who was staring at me with wide eyes.
"What did you do?" He asked, too worried to finish his breakfast.
"Thank you so much Drew."
"Yeah, no problem," I ended the call and sweetly smiled at Beau, "How much do you love me?"
"What did you do?"
"We may or may not be babysitting two Kunitz children in a few minutes.." He sighed and shook his head.
"You are too nice for your own good. Go get ready and I'll wait for them."
When I was finished getting ready, Chris was with his children in Beau's living room and Zach was already climbing on my boyfriend.
"Thank you so much for this," Kuni thanked us again before he left.
He said he didn't know how long we would need to watch them, but they both came with a backpack full of things to play with. Once the kids actually started playing with Beau, he didn't care that I agreed to having them at his house. Watching them run around made me realize how well he did with children.
"I know that look in your eye.." Beau caught me staring at him and the blood started rushing to my cheeks.
"I-uh-"
"We'll talk about this once the kids are gone," he winked and went back to paying attention to his teammate's offspring.
I thought about what he said for quite a while. What did he mean? Was he trying to say that he was alright with having children and getting married at a young age? Or that he wanted to start a family down the road? Either way, I was just as excited as I was scared.
@heysunshine
I understand that. I would love it if it just followed them through their everyday life. I think that would be awesome.
