My Life as Mrs. Crosby

Bringing Charlotte Home

It was only a day or two before we could bring Charlotte home. Having a baby in the middle of hockey season wasn't exactly ideal, but that's how it happened. Those summers as a nanny really helped out when I was alone. My family was here for a while, but soon it was only my mother. When she left, Sidney's mother came to help. It was nice to have them here, but it was nicer to have our house to ourselves again.
Sidney came home late one night from a road trip and I was asleep on the rocking chair with Charlotte. I heard him drop his bag by the door and make his way towards me.
"How was your flight?" I mumbled, half asleep.
"Good. I'll put Charlotte in her crib." He grabbed our child from me and pressed his lips to mine. I crawled in bed and waited for him to join. "How was she?"
"A little angel," I pulled him closer to me. He was cold, but I still managed to get warmer. "We might actually get some sleep tonight."
"I have the day off tomorrow, let's go out and do something."
I fell back to sleep without answering him. I had been up for the past few nights, making sure Sidney could get the rest he needed. It was rough, but he was always helping out. In fact, he did pretty much everything while he was home. Sid didn't want to miss out on anything.
I woke up the next morning to find Sidney on the floor in front of the tv with Charlotte, "Good morning, beautiful."
"Morning," I mumbled as I walked to the kitchen for a cup of coffee. Sid smiled, knowing he wouldn't get a coherent sentence from me until I finished it. Eventually, he walked in to prepare a bottle for Charlotte.
"Why didn't you wake me?" I asked as I poured myself another cup.
He shrugged, "You needed your sleep."
"Yeah, but you got home late last night."
"Slept on the plane." He kissed my forehead and went back out to the living room. I grabbed a bowl and poured some cereal into it.
"Are you seriously eating lucky charms on the floor of the kitchen?"
"Hey," I said with a mouth full of food, "I have my life together at 24. That's pretty rare. Let me eat my cereal alone on the floor." He laughed and shook his head. I wasn't ready to give up some of my college ways just yet.
I slowly got ready and then we went downtown for the day. It was actually pretty warm for late February. I just had on a jacket, as did Sidney, but we bundled up Charlotte pretty well.
While we sat at the table waiting for food, Sidney completely ignored me and talked to our daughter the entire time. I would have been upset, but he just looked so happy. She kept giggling at him and it was absolutely adorable.
"She has your eyes," he looked up at me. Charlotte was still gripping onto his finger. His face always lit up whenever he talked to her or about her. He really, truly loved us more than hockey. Even though I would never ask, this was all I ever wanted.
That night, we laid on the floor and watched movies together. That was how most of our nights were spent. Either that or I watched the Penguins game with Charlotte while Sidney was playing. I'm not going to lie, I missed going out or having date nights, but I knew I'd be able to have one sometime soon. Until then, I was perfectly fine with spending them with my husband and daughter.
