Alive

Two: Sail

Ainsley handed the papers her teacher sent her down with to the secretary. She told her she’d fax them to whomever and be right back. Ainsley nodded at her, smiling. She looked around the office. Her eyes landed on a boy sitting in the counselor’s office. It was Jamie. She tilted her head to the side, wondering why he was there. Felicia never said anything about any problems he was having.
Jamie rubbed his hands on his thighs. He didn’t want to talk about how he felt, but he knew he needed to. He felt like a joke knowing he couldn’t talk to his mother or siblings about this, but here he sat, ready to admit to a stranger that he wanted to kill himself. The counselor sat, smiling at him. He gave a weak smile back.
“I’m Mister Tarnowski, call me T, call me Tarno, call me whatever. I’m only here to help.” He rambled, spinning to face him. So what’s up?”
“I want to die.” Jamie breathed out.
Tarnowski nodded. “Me too.” He gave Jamie a grin. Jamie laughed a bit. “Is it because of the move or what?”
“I moved because of the reason. My older brother, Jordie, he’s into hockey but he isn’t great and my dad’s always pushed me harder, since day one, and it just really overwhelmed me. I felt like I had to escape my dad.” Jamie explained, focused on the floor.
“Luckily, you did escape him.” Tarnowski began. Jamie looked up. “You have a team here that will support you all the way. All the guys are really great to the new kids. Plus, you have your older brother, and your sister.” Jamie nodded. “I’m not saying just brush off how you’re feeling, but remember that you’re out here doing better for yourself and you have people that care.”
Once again, Jamie nodded. “Thank you.” He stood, extending his hand to shake the counselor’s.
“Anytime you need to talk, just walk in. No one really comes to see me.” Tarnowski told him. “Not that I’m complaining.
Jamie chuckled, walking out of the office. He came chest to chest with a female. He recognized it as Felicia’s friend, Ainsley. She was looking up at him, her eyebrow cocked. He furrowed his brows down at her.
“What were you in there for?” She narrowed her eyes, crossing her arms.
He stepped around her. “Academic stuff.” He lied.
“Bullshit. What’s up with you, Jamie?” She hissed.
“Nothing, Ainsley. Don’t worry about it.” He shook his head.
Connard.” She spat in French.
He spun around, she slammed into him. “Don’t swear at me in French, I get enough from Marc.” He stated before walking off again.
Ainsley followed behind him. He walked through the halls, ignoring her pleas for him to tell her. She went on some tangent about how they were 'practically family because she’d been friends with Felicia for years’. He had to remind her that family members didn’t fuck each other, referring to her sleeping with Jordie her freshman year.
“Jamie, it isn’t good to bottle up your feelings! Just tell me! I won’t say a word to anyone!” She begged.
“Go away.” He groaned.
She ran in front of him. She stopped and stomped her foot. “Tell me right now!”
He exhaled, giving up. As he prepared to tell her, Sidney, Marc, Jordie, Tyler, and Shea rounded the corner. Marc narrowed his eyes at Jamie when he saw him with his sister, Jamie’s eyes widened in fear.
“Hey, baud.” Tyler called, doing some handshake with Jamie.
“Hi, Sidney.” Ainsley cooed and smiled up at him.
“Hey, Ainsley. How are you?” He smiled at her.
“I’m good. You look great today.” She complimented.
“Thanks.” He nodded.
Marc shook his head at his sister before dragging her away. Sidney took a deep breath as she was pulled away. Shea laughed. Sidney cocked a brow at him.
“No idea why she makes you so uncomfortable. She was a fun time.” Shea shrugged.
Sidney copied his action. “She’s cute but she’s Kris’s best friend and Marc’s little sister. I’d feel weird.” He admitted.
“But it’d feel good.” Shea smirked.
Marc came back, ranting in French about Ainsley. She could hear him from her locker in the other hall. She rolled her eyes before going to her class. She sat in her seat beside Felicia. Ainsley stayed silent and Felicia knew something was up.
“What’s wrong?” She whispered, trying to not get caught.
Ainsley sighed. “Jamie was talking to Tarnowski and he wouldn’t tell me what was up.”
“Did he look okay?” Felicia was concerned.
“He looked pretty upset.” Ainsley admitted.
Felicia asked to be excused. She texted Jamie and told him to meet her by the gym doors. He did as he was told, but soon regretted it when he saw her face as he approached. Her arms were crossed and she had an angered expression. He hugged her as soon as he saw her, to avoid his death, but she shoved him away.
“Why were you talking to Tarnowski?” She growled.
“It’s not important, Felicia. It’s just shit I need to deal with.” He stated.
“No, fuck you! We’re a family. Anything you need to deal with, I deal with too.” She argued.
He shook his head. “I can’t tell you.” He whispered before walking away.
She growled and followed. “You can’t keep it from me forever, Jamie. We live in the same house. Our rooms are besi,”
He whipped around. “Do you ever shut up? Fuck.” He groaned.
“No, because I’m concerned about my brother and he’s being sketchy as fuck!” She hollered. “Are you gay?”
“No! I’m suicidal, Felicia! I’ve had thoughts of killing myself since you guys left because dad was a total fucking dick. Okay, are you happy to know that?” He yelled.
Felicia frowned before pulling him into a hug. He returned the gesture. She took a deep breath. She couldn’t think of words to say.
“What was dad like?” She asked, nervous of what she’d find out. “Did he hit you?”
“No, but he was abusive.” Jamie chuckled. “I’m working through it and I’m better that I’m back here.”
“Jamie, you barely talk to anyone besides Jordie or myself. You need some friends.” She said, pulling away. “Hang out with some of the guys on the team?”
“I don’t feel comfortable around them.” He confessed. She just frowned up at him. “I need to get back to whatever we were learning so I’ll see you later, okay?”
She nodded. “Please don’t try to keep shit like that from me again.”
“No promises.” He shrugged before walking off.
Felicia decided hearing her big brother was suicidal was a good enough reason to take an early lunch. She headed to the caf and found the spot she always sat in. She heard whistling before Tyler walked in. He waved as he made his way over. He saw the look on her face and sat down beside her, throwing an arm around her shoulders. She rested her head on his shoulder.
“Why do you look an emotion that isn’t angry?” He teased.
“I’m worried about Jamie. He has zero friends besides Jordie and I.” She told him.
“I’ll talk to the guy. He seems fun.” Tyler piped up.
The bell for lunch rang and their mob of friends piled in. The crowded the table. Felicia saved two spots beside her for Ainsley and Kristen. Ainsley walked in with Kaitlyn, taking Kristen’s spot. She placed Felicia’s stuff she had left in class in front of her before sitting. Kaitlyn took the spot beside her.
“Where’s K?” Felicia furrowed her brows.
“Her and Nathan are good again, so they went to his house for lunch.” Ainsley laughed.
“Amazing.” Felicia shook her head.
Jamie came in. Felicia watched every move he made until he sat across from her. He smiled at her as he started to eat. Tyler cleared his throat, leaning forward. Jamie looked up at him.
“Got any plans tonight?” Tyler nodded at him.
Jamie shook his head. “I don’t think so. Got an idea for me?” He asked.
“Hang out with me and the boys?” Tyler suggested.
“Sounds good.” Jamie smiled.
Felicia smiled. She squeezed Tyler’s thigh under the table. He grabbed her hand and squeezed it. He threw his arm over her shoulder, pulling her into him.
