Alive

Thirty Two: Heart By Heart

Morgan knocked on Jocelyn's door. He scrolled on his phone as he waited for it to open. He knew Jake had brought his stuff to Jocelyn's when they left early. Jake's mom called in to excuse him with some bullshit excuse, but Jake was still coming to practice. He called Morgan at the end of lunch and asked if he could come get him from Jocelyn's. The door opened at Jocelyn smiled up at him. She looked like she had just woken up. Morgan smiled back at her as he stepped inside.
"Jake's just in the washroom." She explained, sitting on her couch.
"Cleaning up after the fuck fest?" Morgan teased.
"No, we just watched some movie and fell asleep." She laughed.
Morgan nodded. He stood to the side of the couch. He slid his hands in his pockets, looking around. Jocelyn exhaled, leaning against the back of the couch. He looked down to her.
"Everything okay with the two of you?" He asked, sitting down beside her.
She shook her head. "Something's definitely going on with him." She sighed.
"What do you mean?" Morgan frowned.
"He's hiding something from me. I don't want to think he's," She stopped herself. "I'm worried, Morgan."
"I bet he's okay." He cooed, pulling her into him.
"No, he isn't." Jocelyn argued. "I don't want this to end with him. I really like him."
The washroom door clicked open. They both looked towards it. Morgan pulled away and stood up. He leaned down to her level.
"I'll talk to him." He whispered before he stood up straight. Jake walked into the room.
He smiled at Morgan as he walked in. Jocelyn looked up at Morgan as she turned to see Jake. He picked up his stuff, slinging his bag over his shoulder. He sighed as he walked over to Morgan.
"Wanna take my equipment for me?" Jake grinned.
Morgan rolled his eyes, grabbing the bag. Jake walked over to Jocelyn. He placed his hands on her thighs as he leaned down to her face. She gave him a smile small. He smiled, pressing his lips to hers. She grabbed onto his face, holding him close. Morgan looked over as Jake pulled away. Jake reached down for his bag. Jocelyn's eyes met Morgan's. He could tell she was begging him to find out what was wrong.
Morgan walked out the door with Jake's bag. Jake hopped down the stairs behind him. Morgan threw Jake's bag in his car, closing the trunk. Jake climbed in the passenger's seat and Morgan, the driver's. Morgan drove without saying a word. Jake watched him in confusion. Morgan could feel the stare but avoided it. Jake sighed.
"What's up, man?" Jake called him out.
"Nothing." Morgan shook his head.
"Don't bullshit me." Jake chuckled.
"It's nothing." Morgan repeated.
Silence fell upon them again. They drove to the rink. Morgan climbed out, waving to some of the guys. Jake followed, grabbing his bag first. The two walked into the arena. All the guys were in the change room when they walked in. Jake received some chirps about leaving early to go to Jocelyn's. He just laughed at them. If only they knew how much time he needed to spend with her.
Practice came and went. Jake and Morgan continued to avoid talking. Morgan finished first, walking out to his car. He sat in the driver's seat. He was starting to believe that Jake was cheating. Being best friends, they never usually kept anything from each other. Jake definitely was though.
In Jake's defence, it wasn't something he wanted to share with everyone until he had made his decision. Jake tossed his stuff in the trunk, on top of Morgan's, and climbed in beside him. Morgan started up the car and began the drive.
"Morgan, what's the whole silent treatment about?" Jake groaned.
"Are you cheating on Joce?" Morgan questioned.
Jake shook his head, furiously. "No way in hell."
"What's with the whole sketch act?" Morgan sighed.
"I have some shit going on. I'm not cheating." Jake stated.
"Well she's worried." Morgan finished, pulling up to Jake's house. "It's cool if you're not ready to tell me, but tell your girlfriend."
That night, Jake was tossing and turning, worried about Jocelyn's worrying. He sat up, reaching for his phone. He read 1:07 on his clock. He unlocked his phone and dialled Jocelyn's number. She answered. He could tell she hadn't been asleep.
"Is everything okay, babe?" She sang. He stood up.
"I'm coming over." He said as he started to dress.
"It's one a.m." She laughed.
"I don't care. I need to see you." He stated.
He was at her house in less than ten minutes. She snuck him to her room. She laid down on her bed, staring up at him. He took off his jacket, sitting on her bed. He swung his legs up, pulling the cover over his feet before he wrapped an arm around her. She snuggled into him. He pressed his lips to the top of her head as he traced shapes on her arm.
"Do you really think I'm cheating?" He asked, almost whispering.
Jocelyn took a deep breath. "I mean," She could feel the tears coming.
"I could never do that to you, Jocelyn." He frowned, holding tighter.
She was crying now. "Then what's with the whole secret, sneaking around shit, Jake?" She cried.
"I care about you a lot." He whispered.
She pushed off him, sitting up. "That doesn't answer my question!"
Jake sat up. He rubbed his face. She watched him, waiting for a move. He looked at his lap. She could see the frown on his mouth. She sighed, leaning forward. She squeezed his thigh. His eyes lifted to hers.
"My parents are moving back to Minnesota." Jake blurted. "I don't want to leave the team."
"Jake, you can't leave your family." Jocelyn said as she fell against him.
"I can't leave you either." He confessed. "Minnesota means no you and no team. I don't think I could continue with hockey without these guys."
She took a deep breath. "Stay here. With me."
"I want t,"
"No, like, live here. I can talk to my parents and I'm sure they'd let you." She sat up to face him.
"Joce, I don't kn,"
"Hockey is your dream. I'm asking you to stay for that, not for any other reason." She expressed.
"Not even us?" He teased.
"A little. But even if we don't work out, you could stay here still." She smiled.
He leaned forward, pecking her lips. He pressed his forehead to hers. "You're the best." He mumbled before he kissed her again.
The next morning, Jocelyn were woken by yelling. She shot up and spotted her angry father. Jake hadn't moved an inch, still unconscious. She climbed over him, running over to her dad. She dragged him out of her room and yanked the door shut. He glared at her.
"I'm sorry. He was really upset last night. His parents are moving back to Minnesota." She explained.
"That's a shame." Her dad's hard expression, softened. "Is he playing hockey out there?"
She frowned. "He said he can't without his team." Her dad nodded in understanding. "Do you think he could stay with us?"
"Jocelyn,"
"Dad, please! We have an extra room and I promise that will never happen again." She pointed to her room.
He pursed his lips and crossed his arms. She pouted up at him. He closed his eyes, exhaling. She knew she won.
"Think about Jake's future career." She added.
"You could sell embarrassing stories about him when he's up there." Her dad chuckled.
"So, yes?" She bit her lip. He nodded. She gave him a hug and kissed his cheeks. "I love you. God bless you."
Jocelyn ran into her room. She jumped onto Jake. He let out a groan as she straddled him. She smiled down at him as he slowly woke. He gave her a tired smile. His hands rubbed her thighs.
"Guess what." She chimed.
"It's too early for me to be up?" He whined.
"My dad said you can stay here when your family moves." She grinned.
In an instant, Jake had sat up and flipped Jocelyn back, onto her back. He kissed her, passionately, as he held her hips. She held his face. They paused for a minute.
"Thank you for everything and I'm sorry I worried you."
She rubbed the back of his neck and played with some of the hairs. "It's fine. Just know that I'm here. Always." She said, pulling his face back to hers.
