One Shots

On His Way

**Disclaimer**
This is the first time I’ve written something like this, the lyrics are from Boyce Avenue’s “On My Way” I have changed the lyrics to fit with this one shot, so yeah, I hope you enjoy.

I wasn’t there the moment you first learned to ride

Lee-Ann watched as her daughter ran up the steps to the Crosby door, she knocked on the door with her small stubby hands and waited patiently for someone to answer. Autumn smiled up at Trina Crosby as she opened the door, she had a grin from ear to ear showing off the missing front tooth that had come loose a few days ago.
“Hello Autumn, how are you today?” Trina bent down to talk to the child face to face.
“I’m great! I’m gonna learn to ride a bike today, can Sidney come?” Autumn asked politely, her mother had told her that if she had behaved herself she could invite Sidney over and they could learn to ride their brand new bikes together.
Trina frowned as she saw how excited Autumn was to see Sidney, “I’m sorry Autumn but Sidney is at a tournament for the weekend.” She explained.
Autumn’s smile dropped, she looked at Trina with her big brown eyes and a frown on her face. Sidney was her best friend, they had done everything together, and when Autumn got a bike for her birthday he promised her when it stopped snowing they could learn to ride their bikes.
“That’s okay,” Autumn lied, “Can you tell him to come say hi when he gets back?” She pleaded.
“Of course sweetie.” Autumn said her goodbyes to Trina and walked back to her mom who stood on the sidewalk waiting for her. She grabbed her daughters hand and squeezed it tightly as they walked back to their home without Sidney.
----
Autumn ran up the steps to the large wooden door, she knocked on it excitedly as she held her official drivers license in her other hand.
The door swung open and behind it stood Trina, “Autumn, it’s always a pleasure to see you.” She greeted.
“Hey Trina, is Sid home? I have some exciting news.” She smiled showing Trina her driver’s license.
She pulled Autumn into a tight hug, “I’m so proud of you, but unfortunately Sidney’s out of town for a tournament.”
“Oh,” Autumns smile dropped, she knew Sidney would be out of town for a tournament but he has promised her he would be back in time before her final drivers test. Autumn took a deep breath and forced a smile, “Can you tell him to come say hi when he gets back?”
“Of course.” It was like the past had repeated itself, Sidney wasn’t there when she first learned how to ride a bike and he wasn’t there when she learned to drive. The only difference this time was she didn’t have her mom to hold her hand as she walked back to her home without Sidney.

I wasn’t there the moment you got off your knees

Autumn stumbled and hit the ground hard, she looked up at the larger girl with tears in her eyes, “No one’s going to protect you now.” She spat in Autumns face before running off.
Autumn pulled up her shorts to insect her bleeding knee, the older girls always teased Autumn and she always had Sidney to protect her, that was until he began playing hockey. She thought back to the day Sidney picked her up off the floor and pinky promised to always protect her.
“Where are you now Sid?” Autumn cried to herself, she sucked up the pain and wiped the tears away. Slowly she stood up and got off her knees, she had to protect herself now.
---
Autumn shook off the nerves as she walked in to school on her first day of high school, she had received the news earlier this morning that Sidney would miss his first day due to being out of town for another hockey tournament. She tried not to be too upset over it, it was only her first day she would be able to survive one day without him by her side.
She walked confidently through the halls; Sidney had taught her how to be strong, how to show no fear, he also promised he would beat up any boy who tried to break her heart. She stopped for only a second to check her schedule.
“Move out of the way freshman.” She was shoved out of the way and onto the ground, she fell onto her knees as everyone watched. She took a moment to compose herself as the embarrassment struck, it was her first day and she had been humiliated, Sidney was miles away and all she wanted was for him to comfort her.
“Need a hand?” A voice spoke, Autumn raised her head to look at the boy standing over her lending his hand to her.
She smiled and accepted his hand, he grabbed onto hers and helped her off her knees, she dusted off the dirt on her tights and smiled at him, “Thanks, I’m Autumn.” She introduced herself.
“I’m Nathan; it’s nice to meet you Autumn. See you around.” He walked off before she had the chance to say goodbye.

A tear must have formed in my eye when you had your first kiss

Autumn swayed back and forth to the music blaring in the gym, it was her first high school dance, she had thought of this moment many times. Sidney always promised he’d take her to her first dance, he’d pick her up at her house and they’d go together, they’d dance together, and make everyone jealous of how good of a time they were having. He promised her an unforgettable night, but he wasn’t here.
She looked up at Nathan and smiled, “Thanks for being my date to the dance.”
“I couldn’t let a beautiful girl like you go to the dance alone; it’s a shame Sidney isn’t here to see how good you look in your dress.” Nathan grinned.
“Yeah it’s a shame.” Autumn mumbled to herself.
--
Autumn walked up the steps to her house as she hugged Nathans jacket closer to her body, she took off his jacket once she reached her front door and handed it to him, “Thank you for an amazing night.”
“Anything for you,” He grinned, he slowly leaned in and pecked her lips, it lasted only a few seconds but it was a kiss she’d never forget, it was her first kiss. “Goodnight Autumn.”

I’ll be there the moment you come out in white

Autumn looked at herself in the mirror, today was the day she always dreamed of, the day she spent months planning to make perfect. She smoothed out her white dress and took a deep breath; she had no idea how nervous she’d be.
“Is he here yet?” Autumn asked nervously, Sidney had a game earlier that day, but he promised he’d make it to the chapel in time.
“He’s on his way.” Lee-Ann informed her; she frowned as she saw how worried her daughter was, she watched her daughter grow up constantly disappointed when Sidney couldn’t make it. Deep down there was a space for everything he missed.
---
She made her way down the aisle, she scanned every inch of the room looking for Sidney but he was nowhere to be found. She found herself standing in front of her groom; she looked up at Nathan and smiled the way she did the first time they met.
As the ceremony went on Autumn couldn’t help but keep an eye on the chapel doors, he was on his way, he was always on his way. The chapel doors swung open catching not only her attention but everyone else’s, in ran Sidney completely out of breath.
“Am I too late?” He panted.
“Shut up and sit down.” Trina scolded her son.
“Autumn you can’t marry him,” Sidney spoke, the entire room gasped, “I love you, I’ve always loved you, and I know you love me too.” All eyes were on Autumn, she let go of Nathans hands and made her way down the aisle towards Sidney.
“Autumn,” Nathan called after her, “He can’t love you the way I do, he’s never going to be there for you, he was never there, but I was.”
Autumn looked over at Nathan and smiled, “He’s always on his way.”
