Staring out into the Night

"It has 3 and a half bathrooms, 4 bedrooms." The Realtor lead Patrick and I through an gorgeous, town house in downtown Chicago.

The man continued to walk into the kitchen, "It come with all stainless steel appliances." he said opening the fridge door.

"Do you like it Mrs. Kane?" Patrick said turning around and putting his arms around my waist.

"I love it!" I said throwing my arms around his neck, "How about you Mr. Kane?"

"I think its perfect." he said.

"So?" the realtor said coming back into the empty living room area. "Is this your new home?"

"We'll take it" Patrick said kissing me.

"Great," The man said rifling around in his brief case. "Now if you'll both just sign here, you can move in November first."

That gave us a little less than a week to pack up our entire apartment.

Patrick and I had been in a newlywed daze ever since we had returned from our honeymoon. We had spent two weeks in gorgeous, Maui Hawaii. We both left the island in a state of pure relaxation with a new appreciation for the beach.

Our zhen was shattered when Patrick's season started. What months ago, was lounging on the beach together, was replaced with stitches, Wednesday night rivalries, and the freezing Chicago winter that slowly moved in. I didn't mind it though, I loved my new life.

Patrick and I decided to meet Tazer and his girlfriend Lindsey for dinner a few blocks over from our new home.

We walked into the restaurant to see Lindsey standing there with her arms crossed, and Jonathan looking less than amused.

Patrick and I looked at each other, this was obviously going to be awkward.

We sat down at a table and Jonathan and Patrick started intently, talking about the other nights game, as they ate.

"Bick's shot was sick" Tazer said.

"I know did you see that toe drag? Unreal." Patrick said back. Lindsey rolled her eyes and groaned at the whole conversation.

"What?" Jonathan said annoyed.

"Nothing, I love hearing you talk about hockey, all day and night every day and night." she said pushing hair out of her eyes.

"Well you don't mind talking about it when it's gonna buy you a new necklace!" Jonathan shot back.

Lindsey looked at him in disgust, before throwing her napkin on her plate and heading towards the bathroom.

"Way to go." Patrick said sarcastically, taking a sip of his water.

I hit him lightly on the shoulder and glared at his eyes.

The three of us sat there dumbfounded for a minute, "I'm gonna go talk to her." I said.

"Don't even bother" Jonny said "she's been this way for weeks."

I sighed and got up to talk to her anyway. I opened the restaurant bathroom door to see Lindsey looking in the mirror, wiping her tears with a tissue.

"Hey," I said rubbing her back lightly, she was much taller than me, even when we were both in tears.

"What's going on with you two?" I asked brushing a piece of her blonde hair out of her face.

"He's so frustrating." she said through tears. "He doesn't understand, I don't know anybody here."

I knew how she felt, I thought back to all those nights Patrick had been on road trips, how I used to sit alone in our apartment, in one of Patrick's old t shirts, and felt like I was completely alone in the world.

"Believe me, I know whats that feels like." I said, still rubbing her back lightly.

"And" she stuttered, breathing heavy, crying harder.

"Lindsey?" I said looking at her.

"I'm pregnant!" she blurted out.

I felt the blood drain from my face on the spot, "Oh Lindsey" I said pulling her into a hug.

"But thats not all," she said still crying.

what else could there be? I thought to myself.

"I, I, I" she stuttered before taking a deep breath, "I don't know if Jonathan is the father."

The shock hit me like a tidal wave. "What do you mean?" I asked less consolingly, I was mad. I could feel the anger boiling inside me. How could she do this to Jonny? He was one of the sweetest, kindest men I had ever met in my life. Although I didn't know the inside, he always seemed to be an excellent and attentive boyfriend, always opening doors and pulling out Lindsey's chair for her. Poor Jonathan, I knew how in love he was with Lindsey and even if they were fighting, this was going to kill him.

"You have to tell him." I said. "Now,"

"I, I can't" Lindsey said.

"Lindsey," I said, my voice getting softer, "You can't hide this from him he needs to know. He's been good to you, and you owe this to him. Lindsey you have to tell him, before someone else does" I opened the door and walked back over to our table.

"Patrick, we should go." I said picking up my purse. He looked confused. "Um, Jonathan Lindsey should be out soon, I think there's something she wants to tell you."

With that, Patrick laid the money on the table, "See ya Jonny." he said.

"What happened?" Patrick said as I clung onto him arm, his hands in both his coat pockets.

"Well," I started, "You can't tell anyone"

"Of course" he said.

"Lindsey's pregnant." I said.

"What?" he said as he abruptly stopped walking.

"She doesn't know if Jonny's the father." I said.

"Shit," Patrick said as we started walking again. "This is gonna kill the poor guy, did she tell him?"

"I told her she would have to, its best if he find out from her rather than someone else."

We walked the majority of the rest of the way to our apartment in silence, poor Jonny had no idea the pain he was about to encounter.
