the pain you feel's a different kind of pain.
The weeks went by and life was its normal crazy self, Spring was turning to summer and Patrick and I found ourselves driving the boys to their last tournament of the season.
"Ugh" Patrick groaned catching sight of the immense traffic on the highway. I ran my hand over the back of his neck. It was a long drive from Chicago to the boys game. The sky was cloudy, lightning striking every now and then, while thunder roared through the sky. The highway was packed with angry drivers, beeping and yelling at one another. The traffic crawled along for a while, but eventually began to pick up.
The traffic had us cutting dangerously close to the start of the boys game, Patrick began to pick up more and more speed. I was becoming a little nervous as the car roared down the highway. I looked at the speedometer, only 54 mph, but for some reason it felt like we were hurdling into a time warp.
We turned off the exit to see a line of cars, but we were going too fast, Patrick couldn't stop in time. The big SUV slammed into the mini van it front of us, the car behind us drove straight through the back window.
Patrick's POV:
I slammed on the breaks. The whole thing seemed to happen in slow motion. I turned my head to see Kylie's limp body sailing through the front windshield. "Mommy!" Emily screamed from the back window. "Kylie!" I yelled reaching to try to stop her.
I threw open the door, and ran to where Kylie's body was laying on the side of the road. "Kylie," I picked up her hand, her eyes were closed, her blonde hair was lying in a puddle of blood on the street, her face was clear white, and bruised, she was stained in blood from head to toe. I heard the kids cries from the back seat.
"Kylie, baby" I felt the tears running down my cheeks. Her eyes opened weakly for a moment, "I love you Patrick." slipped quietly from her pale lips. I held tightly to her hand, while cradling my head in my other hand.
"Sir, sir" A police office lead me over to the car, I couldn't see anything, I couldn't feel anything. Was this really even happening?
The paramedics pulled me into an ambulance, "Mr. Kane you have a broken radius, and were going to have to pop your shoulder back in.", I said nothing but kept my gaze down. "Mr. Kane who else was in the car with you?" A police officer asked, I snapped my head up, the kids, oh shit the kids, I thought. "My kids," I stuttered, "Where are my kids?"
"Your kids are fine, although none of us know how, the entire back end of your car is blown out."
The officer said, laughing a bit.
"Where's my wife?!" I said sharply. The police officer's laughter immediately stopped.
"Mr. Kane," The paramedic said, "You're wife was thrown from the car at seventy miles per hour, they tried to revive her for almost half an hour, i'm sorry."
I rocked my head in my hands.
"Where are my kids?" I said.
"We're holding them in the other ambulance." The paramedic said.
I got up from the stretcher, "Sir you have severe head trauma," I shook the paramedic's hand off me, and made my way to the other ambulance.
"NO!" I watched as Emily pushed a paramedic's hand away, "Where's my Daddy?!"
"Get away from her!" I yelled lifting her out of the ambulance.
I lifted Emily into the one of my arms I could move, I couldn't feel the other arm at all, and I didn't care.
They transported the four of us to the hospital.
"Mr. Kane," the doctor said, "Your left arm is severely broken," I didn't even know what was going on. "Mr. Kane?"
"What, yea." I said looking up.
"Kaner?!" I heard someone yell from the hallway, Sharpie burst through the door, "Hey man, Abby's got the kids, she taking them back to our house."
I just nodded. "We're gonna pop your shoulder back in now." The doctor said, I just let them do it, I still felt numb anyway. I pulled my sweatshirt over my face, as we left the hospital. The press jammed cameras, and microphones in Sharpy and I's face. "Come on guys!" I heard Sharpy yell pushing through them.
The last thing I remember is passing out in Sharpy guest room, not ever wanting to wake up.
...
"Daddy" Emily poked me the next morning, tears in her eyes, I pulled her onto my lap, "When's Mommy coming home?" she asked, curling her head into my chest. I felt a tear forming, "Mommy's with the angels Em," I said kissing the top of her head. "The angels in heaven?" She asked looking up.
"Yeah." I nodded.
"When are we gonna see her again?" Emily asked, looking up at me.
"Not for a while, sweetie," I panged me to say.
"Daddy?" she said, "I miss Mommy."
"Me too Em."
...
The next few days were ridiculous. People coming in and out, I hated being in our apartment, all it did was make me think of Kylie.
"Patrick." My mom said coming through the door, "I am so sorry."
Thats all everyone kept saying, "i'm sorry." It didn't help, and it certainly didn't make me feel any better.
All I wanted was Kylie, and she was someone I could never get back.
