Star Crossed
Chapter 3
I could hear my sister talking to Jake while i was putting my keys in the door. I not only heard that, but also the deep sigh from my close right. "Calm down would you?" I laughed causing him to jump a little after our few moments of silence.
"What should I say?" he asked staring at me helplessly. "I don't know, Hi?" I said sarcastically.
"C'mon Savannah, I'm being serious..." he said rolling his eyes at me. "Just go with the flow, you can't exactly plan out the whole conversation." I said trying to be more serious for his sake. He opened his mouth to respond, but before he could I slowly pushed the door open to reveal A tall brunette in jeans and a sweatshirt sitting alongside a small figure with chocolate brown hair and blue pajamas on.
"Mommy!" was the first thing I heard before I felt weight around my ankles. "Hey buddy!" I smiled down at him while I rubbed his head. "Were you good for Aunt Charlotte?" "Yes" he sighed rolling his eyes at me as if to say "Why do you ask that every time?"
"Alright good" I said still smiling down at him before leaning down to kiss his head. It wasn't until I heard the awkward cough behind me that I realized James was still standing there.
"Jake," I paused kneeling down so I was at his level, "Do you remember who this is?" James raised his eyebrow at this question, waiting patiently for the seven year old to answer. "Daddy?" Jake asked cautiously.
"You got it bud" James smiled reaching over to high-five his son. Jake took this as the perfect opportunity to wrap his arms around James' legs and squeeze him as tight as he could, resulting in a groan from his father before he leaned down and hugged him back.
"I missed you" Jake smiled up at him with the blue eyes that were an exact replica of James'. "I missed you too" James said still hugging Jake and rubbing his back slightly.
"Well it's great to see you again and all.... but I should be going, I've got class tomorrow at 9" Charlotte said breaking the silence that followed this cute moment. "How much for today?" I asked her walking over to the island in the kitchen, getting my checkbook. "For the whole day?" She asked. "No for half" I said jokingly shoving her in the shoulder, "Of course the whole day."
"Then around 150, unless you want to give me more" She said winking at me jokingly. "Alright" I laughed looking back down to write the check.
"I'll pay" James said reaching into his back pocket and pulling out his wallet, with Jake still clinging to his leg. "Oh no James, you don't have to" I insisted. "It's the least I could do, I mean he is my son too" He smiled rubbing Jake's head once again messing up his dark brown curls.
James handed the money over to Charlotte resulting in her eyes to go wide at the sight of it, "Holy shit" She said resulting in not only a dirty look but also a slap on the arm. "Charlotte!" I said gesturing over to Jake. "Oh god! I am so sorry! But 350? That's way more than I ever get, I can't take this" She said trying to give a hundred back to James.
"I insist" James said waving his hand at her, not taking any of the money back. "Well thanks..." She said still in shock. "Jake, say goodbye to Aunt Charlotte" I said nodding my head towards him as he walked over to hug her goodbye.
I walked her to the door, not going any farther than that because it was absolutely freezing outside. As soon as she turned up the street, I came back inside and closed the door and locked it. I walked back into the kitchen expecting to see either James or Jake, but saw no one. I then checked the TV room but no one was in there either, so I went into Jake's playroom. This happened to be the spot I found them together, both playing video games.
"No you cant do that!" I heard Jake yell laughing as I started to pick up some of the games out of place. "Why not?" James laughed back. "Because it's cheating" Jake said as if it were the worst word to ever come out of his mouth. "Cheating? I would never!" James joked.
"Jay?" I asked as I came back into the room, "If I get changed will you stay here with him?" "What you don't trust me with my own son?" he faked shocked. "Considering he's probably more mature than you and doesn't even know the meaning of the word, That would be a no" I laughed.
"We'll be fine" he smiled at me reassuringly.
I ran upstairs quickly to change out of the skirt and blouse I had been wearing for the past 12 hours, and put on a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt. I quickly pulled my hair up into a messy low ponytail, not even wanting to bother it. The blonde waves were just staring to fade after a long day.I went into Jake's room and fixed the blankets so that if he happened to fall asleep downstairs, It would be easy enough for me to carry him up and lay him in bed. After doing all of this quickly I came back downstairs and sat on the couch in the TV room next to James. He and Jake had moved in here to watch a movie after James beat Jake in whatever game they were playing repeatedly. Jake was laying spread out across the couch, eyes staring up mesmerized by the heroes on the screen.
"Hey" James smiled over at me as I sat down next to him. "You're both alive?" I joked, "That's a shocker." "For your information," James said grabbing me around the waist and pulling me closer to him, "We even cleaned up" He said smiling proudly. "Did you do it or did he do it?" I asked surprised, resulting in me getting shushed by Jake.
"Both" James whispered not taking his eyes off the screen. "He won't even clean for me" I said even more surprised. "Well now look who's better at this parenting thing" He joked smiling at me.
It wasn't until then that I realized once again, how close we were. He had his arm slung around my shoulder, mine on his chest. My head had been lazily laying on his shoulder as he gently played with my now almost straight hair. I looked back at him, focused on the tv, and couldn't help but smile. Maybe he had changed? He seemed like he was trying harder this time, not that he wasn't good to Jake before. But who knows, It was only his first day back.
"I think he's asleep" James said quietly snapping me out of my thoughts that distracted me from everything happening on the TV screen that seemed to captivate the two boys. "I should probably carry him up" I said standing up to stretch revealing the slight bottom of my stomach just above my pant waist. I felt James' cold hands grab both sides of my waist before he pulled me back down to the couch and kissed the top of my head, surprising me.
"You sit, I'll do it" was all he said before he gently picked up Jake's tiny body in his arms and took him up the stairs as if he was lifting a feather.
I got up to get the remote and change the channel as I heard the heavy footsteps coming back down the stairs, "He's knocked out" he said smiling and chuckling to himself. "Good, He'll sleep later then" I said not even turning from the TV, instead scrolling down the guide.
"What time do you have to go in tomorrow?" he asked me as he sat back down on the couch. "Around 8 I think" I said putting the controller down and now turning to face him. He just nodded in response before asking, "Why'd you transfer to Pittsburgh?"
"I don't know, I just didn't like Columbus" I shrugged, "I got sick of it"
"Or did you get sick of not being able to see me every day?" he winked at me sarcastically. "No that's definitely not it." I said laughing. "I thought you were still in Dallas." I added seriously. "Not anymore" He said looking down. I just nodded looking down at the floor same as he did.
Next thing I knew he was lifting my chin up with his index finger. I looked up into his blue-green eyes and that was the last thing I remembered seeing. I felt his soft pink lips slowly caressing mine before he pulled away and started to gently kiss every inch of my jaw.
"I missed you," he said before he moved back up to my lips once again, kissing shortly and slowly, teasing me. "Yeah right" I said sarcastically in-between his kisses that felt like gentle flutter across my lips, just like the fluttering going on in my stomach.
"I did" he said pulling away completely this time, holding my face in his hands, looking into my deep green eyes.
"Then prove it to me" I said roughly shoving him back down on the couch before I leaned down to kiss him harshly, Bringing my legs up so they were straddling his hips, running my hands through his brown hair wildly.
"Savannah!" I heard as soon as I walked into the medical room. It didnt take long for me to figure out who it was, there was only one person in the room. "Hi, Sidney" I smiled at him.
He was laying on one of the medical tables, Lucy nowhere to be seen.
"Where's Lucy?" I asked him. "She just went to go get a few towels, she should be back any minute." he smiled still watching me as I hung up my coat on the back of one of the many chairs in the room. "You look nice today" He said shyly. "Thanks" I laughed going over to the papers Lucy had set out for him. "The blue shirt really brings out the green in your eyes" he added once again, shyly. "Thank you," I smiled politely, "What are you here for?" "I always come before game days, just to make sure everything's good." I nodded at his response.
"Well, we're all out of small towels...so I just brought the normal ones.." Lucy said looking over at me and Sidney, whose eyes hadn't left me since I walked in. "Do you need any help?" I asked her.
"Not yet." she said, "But someone might come in soon."
"Lucy why don't you let her get some practice in?" Sidney said looking from her to me. As a response to this I immediately recieved a glare from Lucy along with a short, curt "Alright, fine"
"Are you experiencing any pain?" I asked going through my routine set of questions. "No, but very formal" He said making fun of me. "I'm just trying to do my job" I smiled at him, brushing my hair over my shoulder. "I appreciate that," he said.
I did a routine check and massaged out any tense muscles, stretching everything that needed to be stretched and was now just checking over his papers. "Savannah?" "Yes?" I said looking up. "Would you want to....um..." he paused awkwardly, scratching his neck, not able to look me in the eyes, "Go out sometime? after a game of something?" He said asking me as if we were back in the first awkward years of dating.
As soon as he got the words out, There was breaking glass. We both immediately looked over to Lucy, Her caramel colored hair now covering her face, glass shattered at her face before she stormed out of the room. At the same time she walked out, James came walking in. His mood immediately changing from happy, to what seemed like anger when he saw me with Sidney. Maybe he was right. The second day was just as big as the first.
