Star Crossed
Chapter 4
"So what happened in here?" James asked as he carefully helped me sweep up the shards of glass left behind from Lucy.
"I thought you overheard it all.." I said not even looking up from the spot I had been sweeping over and over for the past five minutes.
"All I heard was the glass breaking before she ran out" he said standing up from the spot where he was crouching, trying to pick up some pieces of glass.
"Trust me you don't want to hear anything else" I sighed turning around to empty the glass into the large black trash bin. "It can't be that bad" He said wrapping his arms around my waist and leaning his head onto my shoulder. "Yes it can" I said turning to face him.
We stared intently at each other before i mentioned the big game coming up tomorrow. "Can I stop over tonight," he asked putting a strand of my blonde hair behind my ear, "I have a surprise for you and Jake" "A surprise?" I asked shocked, reaching my arms up and interlocking my hands behind his neck, "You know that with us surprises never end up being the kind that we want" I joked. "But most of the time they turn out better than we expect" He smiled referring to the first time we found out we were pregnant with Jake. "Much better" I smiled back before he leaned in to kiss me.
"You've got to be fucking kidding me"
"Lucy?" James said turning around shocked. "What the hell is wrong with you?" she asked pointing at me.
"Lucy..." I said starting to explain.
"No, no. I get it. I get why you took the job now. But i'm just wondering James or Sid?" she snarled coldly.
"What about Sid?" James asked looking from me to her.
"Nothing" I stopped her short before she could respond. "Oh nothing at all" She said shocking me with her answer. "Besides," she said turning to James," They're getting ready to skate, you should probably go"
"Alright," he said looking between us, "I'll see you later tonight." he said before squeezing my hand one last time and leaving.
It was all quiet once James left until Lucy continued her rampage, "So, you're seeing James tonight? What about Sidney?"
"Lucy, I never said anything to him" I said trying to reason with her, "I probably would have said no anyway."
"Why? because you're to busy fucking Nealer?" She asked rudely.
"No," I said trying to keep my patience, "because I know you like him." "Yeah right," she said after i just barely finished, "I've worked with girls like you, and believe me they don't last long"
Well to say that my second day was a living hell, could be and understatement. Not only did Lucy completely ignore me for the rest of the day, refusing to help me whatsoever, but it was the day before the game. Meaning, all the players were on edge for their first home game in over a week and a half.
"Mom?" I heard Jake say. He was sitting at the table doing his so called "Homework" which was just coloring. "Yeah Bud?" I asked stirring the pasta sauce that was bubbling on the stove.
"What's your favorite color?" he asked looking up at me innocently with his big blue eyes. "Purple" I said leaning over the counter smiling at him. "Just like daddy!" he said excitedly almost jumping out of his chair. "How would you know?" I said laughing at his excitement. "He told me" he said going back to coloring. "Well that explains so much Jake" I said sarcastically while chuckling to myself. "Mhmmm" he mumbled while continuing to color the race cars on his paper.
I heard a knock at the door while I was cooking and Jake told me he would get it. Knowing the only person coming over tonight was James, I let him.
"Mommy! Look who it is!" I heard coming from behind me. "Let me guess...." I said turning to face him, "Daddy?" "Yes!" he said jumping up and down before telling me to come closer. I leaned down to his level and he leaned over to me to whisper in my ear that "Daddy brought presents" I smiled at him before rubbing his head and standing up face-to-face with James.
"Hi Jay" I smiled at him. "Hey Han" he said smiling back. "I hear you've got presents" I said winking at him teasingly. "That was supposed to be secret!" he laughed looking down at Jake who just shrugged his shoulders before going back to the table to continue coloring.
"So my mom stopped by and brought over some old pictures," He said smiling at me. "Oh god please dont tell me i'm in any of them." I laughed turning back to the stove. "Actually you were. Engagement Photos." Those two words made me stop dead in my tracks. All the bad memories, all the pain, all the sadness suddenly came flooding back. "You still look the same" He said simply. "But Jake looks different.""Well he was only 2" I fake laughed quietly, still thinking of the bad memories. "He still looks good either way, just like his momma" he smiled at me before kissing me on the cheek and grabbing my waist.
Dinner wasn't that bad considering I'm a terrible cook. Now, all the memories that came along with it, they were bad.
"Savannah?" James asked looking at me worriedly. "Hmm?" I said just snapping out of my thoughts to look up at him. "Here," he said handing me the carefully wrapped box, Jake holding the matching one, "Are you alright?" he asked concerned. "Thank you." I said smiling at him politely as I took the box, "I'm fine" "Are you sure you're okay? You've been acting weird all night" He said suspiciously. "Im good" I said trying to avoid the subject.
"Daaad" Jake whined, "Can we open them already?" "Go ahead" James smiled pulling me closer to him on the couch.
I opened the box to reveal a Pittsburgh Penguins emblem, already knowing where this was going, I lifted the jersey out of the box and turned it around to reveal the 18, and NEAL in big letters on the back.
"Sick!" I heard Jake say as I looked over to see his replica of my jersey, in a smaller size and a hat signed by many players on the team. "Thanks dad!" he said running over to hug James before sliding on both the jersey and the hat.
"Thanks Jay," I smiled pecking his lips lightly before folding the jersey back up and sticking it in the box once again. I laid back down on his chest as we watched Jake go on excitedly about how "Sick" this was. I glanced up one last time at James to see him smiling down at me before he kissed the top of my head and pulled me closer to him, if that was even possible.
It was around 11:30 by the time James left and Jake was in bed. I was finishing doing the dishes, staring at my phone as if waiting for a special message. Although, in reality I was contemplating whether or not to send one. I dried the last dish and wiped my hands off before placing the towel on the counter now moving so that i was standing right in front of my phone, sitting on the charger. I slowly picked it up, unlocked it, and went into my messages. I searched for a specific name before typing "I thought about what you said, tomorrow night sounds great" I stared at the text for a few minutes before making up my mind and hitting send. I stood there for a few seconds, regretting my choice, but at the same time, I felt like this was the best decision i made all day. I was sorting through my thoughts when I saw my phone glow, saying that I had a knew message. I read the message first "Great! I'll come get you and then we can go, Goodnight Savannah :)" before looking up at the name flashing above the text,
"Sidney"
