Star Crossed
Chapter 9
We boarded a bus, getting ready to leave for the game. The players sat in their usual seats; Sid and Flower, Brooks and Tanner, Beau and Bort. I looked around for a place to sit, the only spot being next to Lucy.
"Hey!" She smiled up at me as I sat down next to her.
"Hi" I smiled at her. "How're you doing, Haven't talked to you in awhile about anything besides work" She chuckled. "Im good, What about you?" I asked to be polite. "I'm great" She said smiling down at the book in her hands, "So I'm guessing James told you..." She faded off. "Yup" I said, "You guys are great together" I lied. "You think so? I know you guys kind of had a thing." She said putting air quotes around thing. "Not really" I laughed, lying through my teeth. "Okay.. Good" She smiled looking down and starting to read her book.
We got off the bus a little while later, only to board a plane minutes after. This time Lucy sat with Paul Martin, talking intensely about anything and everything. "Savannah" I heard from behind me, "You can sit here" James said patting the seat next to him.
I looked around to see if there were any other seats open, finding none. I sighed and sat down next to James.
"Not happy to sit next to me?" he laughed. "Oh, I'm just overjoyed" I said sarcastically. "My mom called me" He said staring straight forward. "Why?" I asked suddenly interested in the conversation. "To tell me Jake misses us already" He laughed, "He's expecting one of us to be back later tonight." "Oh no" I said suddenly concerned for my little boy.
"He'll be fine" James said smiling at me as he reached over to hold my hand. "I know" I said loving the feeling of his warm touch. "Good" He smiled still holding my hand for awhile until the plane started to take off. "So what are you going to do in Toronto?" He asked. "I don't really know," I said just starting to think about it, "Haven't really thought about it." "Go relive old memories?" He joked.
"You're not funny" I said glaring at him. "I wasn't trying to be" He said looking over at me. "Alright smart ass" "I was being serious, "He continued, "I was suggesting we go do things we used to together." He said. I could tell by the look in his eyes that he was serious. He wasn't serious much, but when he was you could tell.
"So?" He asked. "I don't know" I laughed. "Come on Savannah, live a little" He urged, "There's no need to be so uptight about everything, Let loose for once" He said making me angry. "I am not uptight" I said. "Yes you are," he laughed, "I would know." "Fine" I said giving in to him like I always do "Just this once."
"I thought you were oh so healthy" I laughed putting air quotes around healthy. "Not when it comes to this place" He said referring to the ice cream store we just walked out of. "Whatever you say" I laughed. "What's next on the list of flashbacks, huh?" I asked eating some of my ice cream. "Ice skating on the old pond" He said smiling at me. "Oh no no no" "Oh yes yes yes" He laughed. "You know I could never ice skate!" I said hitting him in the arm. "That was what made it fun!" He laughed even more. "Speaking of ice skating, How's Jake doing with it?" "Well he hasn't had anyone to teach him in a few years" I said referring to him. "I didn't choose not to be around" he said seriously. "I know I know" I said quietly, "But he's been doing alright, not as great as his dad though" I said shoving him lightly. "He'll get there sooner or later" He smiled staring straight forward.
"Come on, One foot at a time" He laughed at me as i tried to skate. "This is horrible!" I laughed almost falling. "I think you got worse over the years" He said. I stopped skating to look at him and said, "You seriously think that's possible?" I looked him in the eyes, his already looking into mine. "You still make the skates look good" "Better than you do" I joked causing him to smile crookedly. "Alright gorgeous, no need to get cocky on me" He laughed causing me to smile along with him.
We stood there quietly until I leaned my head on his chest looking up at him. "You're amazing, Did you know that?" He asked seriously. "No?" I said confused. "You are," He said, "Always have been" He finished before he leaned down to kiss me. It started off slow and sweet. As it grew longer, it became Faster and more forceful. "I missed you" He said pulling away from me, "When you left" He said sadly. "Let's not talk about the past" I said laughing. "We need to" He said seriously. "Then can we at least go back to the hotel?" I asked, not wanting to sit and talk in the freezing cold. "Sure" He said helping me to skate back to the edge of the pond.
