Say You Like Me

Five

Three weeks and four days. I have not spoken to Gabriel Landeskog in three weeks and four days, and it was killing me. After Gabe left that night I confronted Ryan. Of course he begged for me to forgive him but I told him we were done and he could go fuck himself, and that slut Sarah. Since then, I had no interaction with him, Gabe, or even Jeff. It was helpful that I had finals so I could get my mind off of Gabe but now we only have a few weeks left of high school. Prom is coming up and then there is graduation. One of my biggest fears is not remaining friends with everyone I have met in high school when we all go to college. I most certainly am not going to let Gabe go because I didn’t have the guts to tell him my feelings. Every day that moment runs through my mind and I just wish I would have told him that he means the world to me and that even though I might not love him the way he loves me, I still want him in my life.

I stared at my computer screen, snuggled in blankets, looking at prom dresses and thinking about how I didn’t have a date when I heard someone pounding on my front door. Unfortunately, my parents were out to dinner so I had to get up off my lazy, pathetic ass and answer the door. I opened the door was shocked to see Jeff standing there. “Can I come in?” He asked politely but sternly. I nodded and moved away from the doorway so he could fit through. We both stood awkwardly in my front hall waiting for the other to speak. “So…” I started to say but Jeff cut me off. “What the fuck is going on?” I was shocked once again with Jeff. “Watch your language bud.” I said jokingly but he didn’t crack a smile. “I’m serious Nat. What is going on with you and Ryan and Gabe?” I sighed, knowing that I had to tell Jeff. “Well Ryan cheated on me,” I began, “And Gabe told me and then I broke up with Ryan.” Jeff sighed. “I guess that explains a lot. I’m sorry that Ryan cheated on you with that classless girl, Sarah. And I’m sorry Gabe didn’t tell you sooner. They’ve been fighting lately. On the ice, I mean. Off the ice they don’t talk. At the charity game a few weeks back, which you were absent from, Gabe and Ryan started fighting during the game. I can’t have my two line mates fighting, let alone my own captain and teammate fighting. Do you know how bad that looks? We play at the Rangers' annual charity game for children battling cancer and my own two teammates drop the gloves in the middle of the first period! They are so lucky that the season is over because they would have been kicked out and suspended.”

I leaned back against the wall. “Wow,” was all that I could come up with. “What else happened with Landy? He’s been mad at everyone lately and hasn’t hung out with the guys in weeks.” Jeff asked and by the way he said it I got the feeling that he had an idea of what happened. “Well, Gabe picked me up from my date with Ryan because he didn’t show, and they showed me why Ryan didn’t show, and then he told me he loved me.” I whispered the last part but by the look on Jeff’s face I think he heard me.

After a moment of silence Jeff asked, “Do you believe him?” I slowly nodded me head. “Yeah, I think I do.” Jeff chuckled a bit. “You better,” he said smiling, “That kid is totally in love with you. He has been since you two met. It’s kinda pathetic at times when he’s always there when you need him. He's kinda like a knight in shining armor and you're his princess." Jeff started blushing. "Sorry, my sisters watch a lot of Disney. Back to what i was saying, he's always ready to drop everything and save you. For instance, he was on a date with that girl, Brenna, the night you had your date with Ryan. He was so messed up over that fact that you were going on a date so he asked out Brenna but then totally ditched her to pick you up when Ryan didn’t show. He’s totally whipped and you two aren’t even together.” I smiled at the fact that he ditched a girl to be my knight in shining armor. “Where is he?” I asked urgently. “Home.” Jeff smiled because he knew exactly what I was about to do. “Thanks Jeff.” I hugged him and grabbed my keys off of the counter. “I’m glad we had this talk. Now go get your man!” Jeff and I started laughing as we walked out my front door and into our cars. He waved to me as he backed out of my driveway and I smiled back. I was currently on a mission to get my “man.”
