Wake Me When It's Over

Part One

I jolt awake as a loud noise berates my poor ears.It takes me a few seconds to realize my cell phone is ringing. Whoever’s calling better have a damn good reason. I was in the middle of a very important dream involving whipped cream and chocolate syrup.

I answer the phone without bothering to look at the ID, “Hello?”

“Oh shit, you were asleep weren’t you? It has to be two or three in the morning over there. This time zone crap always fucks me up,” my late night caller babbles.

“Sid?” I interrupt.

He chuckles softly, “Yeah hi babe, I didn’t mean to wake you. I wasn’t sure when I’d be able to give you a call next so I thought I would now. We’re on the bus to San Jose, and I’ll probably go right to sleep once we get to the hotel.”

“No, it’s okay hun. I’m glad you called, and you never sleep on the bus so that’s no surprise. How long a drive is it from Los Angeles?” I ask.

“It’s a five hour drive,” Sid replies.

I grimace to myself because I know he prefers to fly places, “Are you going to survive the trip?”

“Of course,” he says, “that’s why I called you. Anyways, did you watch any of the game?”

I smile, “Yes and you guys kicked some serious ass! Tell Geno he had a beautiful goal.”

The Penguins were on the tail end of an almost two week road trip. They had one more game in San Jose before flying back home. So far they were 4-1-1, and that wasn’t too shabby considering they had played some of the best teams in the western conference.

“What did you think of the captain’s game winning goal?” I could practically hear him pout.

“Eh, it wasn’t bad. I’d chalk it up more to luck than skill, though.” I reply with a smirk.

Sid snorts, “Wow, thanks babe. I love you too.”

“Oh please,” I say, “like you need me to stroke your poor little ego.”

“No, I have something bigger I need you to stroke,” he lewdly suggests.

I can’t help but giggle as I hear a couple teammates groan in disgust.

“Hey Captain,” I hear James yell, “some of us are still awake and don’t need to hear you have phone sex with your girl!”

“Fuck off Nealer. You’re just jealous,” Sid retorts.

At this point, I’m laughing hysterically at the banter between the two teammates.

I eventually calm down and say, “I’m more than willing to help with any stroking needs once you get home. I miss you, baby.”

He sighs heavily, “I miss you too, but only one more game. I’ll be home in two days.”

“I can’t wait. I think I’m going to have a surprise waiting for you,” I hint.

“Now I really can’t wait to get home,” Sid replies.

I try to hide a yawn, but he hears me, “Alright you need your sleep, and I need to go have a conversation about eavesdropping with some of the guys. I’ll talk to you later babe. I love you.”

“I love you too. Goodnight sweetie,” I sleepily say as I snuggle into my bed.

As soon as I hang up, I easily fall back to sleep and resume my illicit dreams.

Later that morning, I’m on my way to go wedding dress shopping. My little sister, Sarah, is getting married in about six months. I’m so excited!I’m meeting Sarah, our mom, our Aunt Marie from our dad’s side, and the maid of honor Tiffany at a small boutique in downtown Pittsburgh.

“I feel like we just went dress shopping yesterday for you, Ashley,” my mom says once we settle down and wait for Sarah to start trying on dresses.

I laugh, “It’s been almost two years mom.My dress is collecting dust in the back of my closet now.”

“Speaking of years,” my aunt states, “when are you going to start giving your mom grandkids?”

“Oh my god Aunt Marie,” I gasp incredulously, “not anytime soon. Sid and I are still very much in the prime of our careers. There’s a lot we still want to do that doesn’t necessarily involve having kids.”

The subject of babies has been ongoing with my family. They see so many other hockey wives become stay at home moms pretty quickly. Hell, my mom was one, but I’m not ready yet. Don’t get me wrong, I love kids and I want to be a parent, but I still like it being just the two of us.

“Ladies, I think it’s time to concentrate more on dresses and less on carrying on the family genetics,” Tiffany interjects.

I smile and bump shoulders with her, “And this is why you’re the maid of honor, not me. You’re the voice of reason.”

“That and you have to travel a lot for work,” she adds.

“And there’s that,” I agree and soon Sarah comes out wearing the first of many dresses.

After about two hours, its clear Sarah isn’t going to find her dress today. Next weekend we’ll take a trip to New York City and visit Kleinfeld, which is where I got my wedding dress. We decide to go grab a late lunch, and end up staying at the restaurant for a couple hours just gossiping and having fun. Once I get home, I go into my office to work on a current project for my company. I’m part of the marketing department for a graphic design company, and we’re in the middle of trying to hook a huge client. Any free time I have is usually spent on this project. I work until around 10:30pm and decide to give Sid a call.

“Da?” a very Russian voice greets me in one ring.

“Geno,” I ask very confused, “why are you answering Sid’s phone?”

He snickers, “Because I take it from him.”

“Well can you please give it back to him?” I ask sweetly.

“No,” he says simply.

“Geno…” I start.

He quickly interrupts, “No, you talk to me. I better than him. You don’t need him. Marry me.”

I shake my head at his antics, “Just give the phone to my husband you damn Russian. You can propose to me again in person.”

“Okay, okay,” Geno gives in, “you miss out though.”

“I’m sure,” I reply.

I hear Geno moving around the hotel room and knock on a door.

“Hey Sid, beautiful wife want to talk to you,” he says.

“Hello beautiful wife,” says a familiar voice, “I wasn’t sure if I was going to hear from you tonight.”

“I’m sorry,” I say, “I got caught up with work, but here I am now. I had to call eventually considering I probably won’t be able to talk to you until I see you. And I need to wish you luck!”

“We need all the luck we can get with the Sharks being undefeated at home so far,” Sid states with some nerves.

I scoff, “They won’t be after the Penguins are done with them.”

“Thanks for the vote of confidence, babe. It helps,” he replies.

“You’re welcome, kid,” I say teasingly using a nickname he isn’t fond of.

He sighs, “Alright, well I have to get some sleep. Someone needs to be well rested enough to deal with knuckleheads like Geno. I love you, Ash.”

“Love you too, Sid” I reply and hang up.

I should head to bed, too. I actually need to go to the office in the morning.

The work day ends up flying by and soon I find myself sitting on my couch with two fellow hockey wives, waiting for the game to start.

“I’m pregnant,” Emily blurts out suddenly.

“Oh my god, no way!” Catherine and I shout in unison.

We pull Emily into a big group hug. I am so happy for her.

“Have you told Tanner yet?” I ask.

Emily shakes her head, “I just found out at the doctor’s yesterday so I thought I would surprise him when he gets home tomorrow.”

“Baby Glass number two!” Catherine squeals.

“This has got to be a good omen for the game tonight. The Penguins have to beat the Sharks now!” I say just as we watch the puck drop.

And I was right, the Penguins beat the Sharks 2-0. Flower got his fourth shut out of the season! Emily and Catherine leave right after the game ends around 1:00am. As I make my way to bed I send Sid a text.

Me: I told you so Mr. Worry Wart. When are you going to start trusting my instincts? Great game baby, I love you and can’t wait to see you in a couple hours! <3 :-*

I don’t expect a reply and I don’t get one. They should be heading straight to the airport right after the post game interviews. I climb into bed with the happy thought that I finally get to see my husband again soon.
