Birthday Ball

The guests had all gathered in the ballroom as they mingled among each other, they waited for the arrival of the birthday girl. The ballroom doors swung open and in walked Faelyn, the crowed clapped and bowed as she walked by them, Arabella walked in behind Faelyn with her arm linked with her dad. Faelyn walked towards the middle of the room to meet her date.
“You look beautiful.” Alex complimented as he bowed in front of her, she smiled and thanked him, she blushed as she noticed all eyes on her waiting for her to start the first dance.
Kassidy stood by Kamila as they watched Alex and Faelyn dance; slowly other couples began to join them, men were grabbing women’s hands and dragging them over to dance with them. Kamila looked around the room trying to find the one person she couldn’t stop thinking about, her eyes searched the room.
Kassidy looked over her shoulder and spotted Prince Kane strutting towards them, “He’s right behind us, good luck.” She whispered into her ear before grabbing her tray and walking off.
She felt a tap on her bare shoulder, she slowly spun around and her eyes locked with Patrick’s, “Care to dance?” He asked, Kamila nodded and accepted the hand he had offered her.
She rested her left hand on his shoulder as her right hand held his, they danced together in silence, Kamila was too busy focusing on her dance steps to talk to him. She would never be able to live with herself if she stepped on his foot during their first dance.
“What’s your name?” He asked breaking the silence between the two of them.
“Kamila Skinner.” She introduced herself.
“Skinner? That’s rare, are you from Orion?” He asked.
Kamila shook her head no, “I’m just visiting my cousins for a few months.” She lied; she had spent hours in front of the mirror practicing her lines so that he would believe every word she said.
“The Toews are your cousins?” He asked as he let go of her waist and spun her around, he rested his hand back on her waist pulling her closer towards him.
She nodded, “My father David is Jonathan’s brother.” She repeated the words Arabella and Faelyn had told her to say.
Patrick nodded understanding, “Would you like to go outside for some fresh air?” He asked, Kamila nodded her head; she took his hand as he guided her through the crowd, they walked out the doors and into the courtyard.
She sat down crossing her leg over the other, she rested her hands in her lap as Patrick sat beside her, he wrapped his arm around her pulling her closer to him.
“I know this is kind of ridiculous, but the minute I laid eyes on you I knew I had to know you,” He admitted shyly, “It’s not easy for me to interact with others, and I don’t really get out much but I knew I had to come here tonight and talk to you.”
Kamila blushed, “I know what it’s like to lose a parent, I lost my own mother and I especially know how hard it is to be forced to move on without her in your life.”
This was one thing Kamila hadn’t lied about, she knew David Toews wife had passed away giving her a chance to be honest with him.
“I didn’t even have a chance to get to know her, how could I miss someone I never knew?” He asked, he held his face in his hands; Kamila rubbed his back trying to comfort him.
Patrick never talked about the death of his mother, not with anyone, not even his own father. He didn’t see the point in talking to someone about her death because he felt that no one understood, his father had moved on, so why couldn’t he?
“You have every right to miss her Patrick because at the end of the day there’s someone who’s supposed to be in your life and they’re not, and it isn’t fair, but hiding away is not going to fix anything. You’re spending your days hiding in your room, never interacting with anyone, you’re not living the life your mother would have wanted for you.”
“I always felt so alone, like no one ever understood, but you do, you understand Kam.” He spoke; he grabbed her face gently pulling it towards her and pressed his lips to hers.

Kassidy refilled her tray with wine glasses; she held it up as she walked among the crowd offering drinks the the guests,
“Kassidy!” Arabella called out to her, Kass smiled as she walked towards Arabella and the guy she was talking to.
“Have you seen Sidney?” Arabella asked, she grabbed a glass off the tray and chugged it down.
Kassidy shrugged, “The last time I saw him he was talking to Scarlett.” She explained, her eyes widened, she set down her glass and excused herself, she needed to find him.
Just as Kassidy was about to leave she locked eyes with the person Arabella had been talking to before she was called over, her mouth dropped a bit as she came face to face with Prince Bennett. He was just as shocked to see her; he cleared his throat playing it off.
“What are you doing here?” He asked.
“Working.” She mumbled as she held up the tray in her hands to show him.
“I didn’t think I’d ever see you again.” He shook his head still in awe that he was finally seeing the girl he couldn’t stop talking about.
“Crosby!” Jonathan called out, Kassidy turned her attention as the king of Orion and Raids walked up to her, “Is she bothering you Bennett?” Jon asked.
“No, of course not sir. I was just asking what refreshments she was serving.” Beau covered for her, he grabbed a drink off her tray before leaving her alone with the kings.
“You name Crosby?” Evgeni asked, he knew exactly where he recognized that name from.
Kassidy nodded, “Kassidy Crosby, it’s a pleasure to meet you sir.”
“Vivian Crosby?” He asked.
“She’s my mother, do you know her?” Kassidy asked confused, as to why the king of Raids knew her mother, after all they were just peasants.
“She old friend, nice lady.” He faked a smile as he eyed Kassidy; he knew where she got her big brown eyes from.
“Can I get everyone’s attention?” Alex called out interrupting everyone’s conversations, all eyes were on him and Faelyn.
“What are you doing?” She whispered confused.
He grabbed her hands with his, “Faelyn, I love you,” He got down on his knee, “Will you marry me?” He asked.
The crowd gasped, she looked around the room at all her family and friends, Arabella was standing alongside Sidney and were just as shocked as she was, Kamila and Patrick were nowhere to be found, she locked eyes with Jeff and her stomach dropped.
She couldn’t say yes, she knew she loved Jeff; he was the only person she wanted to be with, he shook his head disappointed and upset. She watched him leave the room, she wanted to run after him but then she saw her father, he was staring at her watching her every move. Although he wasn’t saying anything she knew he wanted her to say yes.
Alex cleared his throat waiting for his answer; Faelyn faked a smile, “Of course!” He took the ring out of its box and slid it onto her shaky finger.
He got up from his knee and kissed his new fiancée, the crowd cheered as they watched the young couple kiss. Many people walked up to them congratulating them on the engagement, Faelyn faked a smile throughout the whole thing, especially when her father walked over.
“I knew you’d do what’s expected of you, don’t mess this up.” He whispered as he hugged his daughter.
“Anything for you daddy.”
