The Road Back to Your Heart

Why does it Still Hurt?

Three years is a long time to be away from your family, but for Gabi it had almost been  ecessary. She hadn’t seen her parents in almost five months, and her sister in almost a year but that wasn’t the family she was missing the most. It was the family that really wasn’t her family but had helped raise her that became a second family to her, the family she wanted to be a part of and was close to joining or so she thought. Gabi shook her head, no, she wouldn’t think of him, even if she was driving about 12 hours to see him play the next day, but only because that is where her family was. About two  eeks ago, she had graduated from Yale University, a year early, and top of her class. She had spent three years in New Haven, CT, away from family and away from the heartache that was ever present in her hometown of Thunder Bay, Canada. It had been three years, but it still hurt like it had only happened yesterday. Maybe that is because you haven’t let yourself move on. Gabi shook her head, no, she scolded herself, she had moved on, it was just the memories, the feelings, are what hurt, not what happened. It had been three years, Gabi was not still in love with Eric, there was no way. As she drove, her mind wandered back to that day, the fateful day that changed her life that rocked her to the core.
Flashback
The barn was the place that Gabi and Eric went to be alone, and with Eric preparing to leave Thunder Bay for Raleigh in a few weeks, alone time was needed. She understood that his family wanted to spend as much time with him as possible, her family was the same, seeing how she was going to college, she had been accepted into every college she applied to and that made her extremely happy because she had gotten into both University of North Carolina and Duke University, which meant she could go to Raleigh with Eric, they didn’t have to be apart. When they entered the barn, Gabi could feel something was off, he was hiding something, and something was bothering him.
“Eric,” Gabi said reaching for his hand, only to have him jerk it away from her. “What’s wrong?”

Eric sighed running his fingers through his blonde locks, “Elle, I think we should break up. If you come to Raleigh with me, you’ll be giving up your dreams. Ever since we were little, all you wanted to do was go to Yale and if we stay together, you won’t be able to do that.”
She felt her heart start to shatter with each word he spoke, “You don’t mean that, Eric. That was my dream before you, before I fell in love with you. I don’t want that anymore. I want you.”

“No,” He said. He knew she’d put up a fight but this is what was the best, for the both of them even if it killed him to let her go. “Elle, we’ve been dating for almost three years, I know you better than that. You’ve wanted to go to Yale forever, you are just putting that aside to be with me. I’m letting you go, follow your dreams. I don’t want you to give up on your dreams for me.”

“I wouldn’t be giving up my dreams, Eric. I’ve made new ones, ones that involve you that involve getting married, having a family with you. There are great colleges in the Raleigh area, don’t give up on us, Eric please,” Gabi said blinking back tears, feeling that her arguments were fruitful and that he had made up his mind.

Eric walked over to her and hugged her tightly, “I love you, I do Elle, but this, us, won’t last once we are in Raleigh. I’ll never be there, and it will hard. I can’t do that to you. It is just easier we end this now, before you give up everything.”

Gabi pushed away from him and started towards the door of the barn, she had heard enough, if he didn’t want her, than she’d get over him. When she got to the door, she turned around, tears streaming down her face, “I hope you have a great life, Eric, and when you realize that you made a mistake, I won’t be waiting for you. Just remember that. Goodbye, Eric Staal, have a fantastic life and career. I hope it brings you all the happiness in the world.” She didn’t wait for him to answer; instead she swung open the barn doors and ran.

Gabi hadn’t realized that she had started crying until she had to pull over to the side of the road, to calm herself down. By the time she was back on the road, she had wasted a good ten minutes on that side of the road crying. Gabi had left New Haven early Sunday morning, and finally reached Raleigh, NC around 8:30 that night. She had a weird feeling as she pulled up the hotel where her family was, like the one request she had asked for, hadn’t been followed and when she saw her little sister waiting for her outside, with a look on her face, her thoughts were confirmed. Eric Craig Staal knew she was coming, and what that meant, Gabi didn’t know.
