The Road Back to Your Heart

April 2005- A Hitch in the Plan

April 2005

Eric arrived at Yale with a plan. He was going to win Elle back if it was the last thing he did. Today, it would have been five years that they had been together if he hadn’t been an idiot and broke up with her. He had a box of smarties with him, her favorite candies and a bouquet of pink roses, her favorite flowers. Eric was willing to do whatever it took to win her back. If it meant he had to sleep on a bench outside he would do that, if it meant singing to a complete stranger, he do that. He would do anything to prove his love to her, anything. Eric walked towards the Hewitt Quad, expecting her to be there reading or studying or just enjoying the outdoors after all she grew up on a farm, his Elle was an outdoors type of girl and would much rather be outside than cooped up inside all day. He smiled when he found her, sitting under a tree with a book in her lap and her golden hair pulled back out of her face. Elle had an amused smile on her face, so he could tell that she was enjoying the nice warm spring day and her book. Eric frowned when he saw a sigh escape her lips as Elle closed her book and stared off into space, thinking of something. He could tell by the look on her face, she was thinking of something that upset her, or someone.

“You know,” A voice said behind him. “Watching her like that could be considered stalking.”

Eric turned around and was faced with the guy from the year before, Nathan, “What do you want?”

“I want you to leave Nikki alone,” Nathan sneered at him. “I know all about you and what you did. You don’t deserve her.”

Eric looked at him with a sigh, “I don’t but that is also for her to decide, not us and her name isn’t Nikki.”

“It is here at Yale,” Nathan said with a smirk. “She dropped Gabi or Gabs or even Elle. Oh, yes, I do know your little pet name for her.”

Eric growled, “You know nothing.”

“I know a lot actually. I know that five years ago today, you asked her out and I know three years later, you dumped her after she spent three years with you, cheering you on, going to all your games, dealing with rumor after rumor about how you were seeing girls on the side,” Nathan said crossing his arms over his chest. “I know that she applied to every college in a hockey town so that wherever you were drafted she’d have a college to go to. I also know that the day you broke up with her, you broke her heart into a million tiny pieces. Finally, I know she is much happier without you.”

Eric chuckled, “If you think Elle is happy you are stupider than you look. That smile she has on her face, it doesn’t reach her eyes, and it means she is putting on a show for everyone else. When Elle is truly happy her smile reaches her eyes and they light up like a Christmas tree.”

“What do you know about Nikki?” Nathan scoffed. “She has changed. You changed her when you broke up with her.”

Eric sighed, “I’m not going to stand here and say that there are probably things that I don’t know about her. I don’t doubt that she has changed in the time we have been apart especially since I know that I have. I also know with all of my heart that we are meant to be. I was an idiot and I’m prepared to do anything it takes to get her back.”

“Well,” Nathan smiled. “There’s another place you are wrong. Nikki is over you. She has moved on. She is with me now.”

Eric shook his head, “No. She wouldn’t date a guy like you.”

Nathan didn’t respond, he just walked away towards Elle and sat down next to her. Eric watched as he kissed her cheek and Elle giggle like she used to when he did the exact same thing. He watched them interact for a few moments awe stricken that the woman he loved was actually with a pompous jackass. He watched them for a while, watched them talk and Elle giggle and scrunch up her nose at something Nathan said and when his heart couldn’t take it anymore, he walked away, realizing that he needed to do a lot more than just show up with flowers if he was going to win her back. He was going to have to prove to her that she was the most important thing/person in his life. Eric hailed a cab not noticing that the couple he had been watching was having a disagreement and if he had known what about maybe he would have stayed put.

“Nikki,” Nathan sighed. “I really don’t see why you have to go to the stupid draft. I don’t trust that Staal won’t try something funny and try and get you and the ass back together.”

Elle rolled her eyes, “For one, his name is Marc and I made a promise to him before Eric and I broke up. I made a promise to all four of them that I’d be at their drafts no matter what. Now because of the lockout, Marc doesn’t know when or where the draft will be, but when he does he is going to tell me and I’m going. He knows not to pull anything like that because I’d never speak to him again and he doesn’t want that. Look I told you when we got together, just because Eric and I are done, doesn’t mean I’m done with his brothers. They are like family to me and nothing can change that. So accept it or move on cause it isn’t changing.”

“Fine,” He said with a sigh. “I don’t like it but you mean too much to me to let you go because of stupid reason like this. Let’s go get some ice cream.”

Nathan stood up and held out his hand to her which she took and the couple headed out for their weekly ice cream date. As they walked towards the ice cream parlor, Elle swore she saw a familiar head of blonde hair but shook her head. That was impossible, he wouldn’t come here. He didn’t want her. She forced the smile on her face and spent the evening with Nathan, a man that she cared about but wasn’t sure she’d ever love.
