The Road Back to Your Heart

Jordan's Day (NHL Draft 2006)

The day had come for Jordan's draft. Jordan was a nervous wreck, anyone who knew him could tell. Gabi could also tell that Whitney, even though she said that she didn't care where Jordan was drafted to, actually did care. Whitney loved Jordan but refused to let herself show it. She had watched her sister crash and burn because of love and she wasn't about to let Jordan Lee Staal do that to her. Plus, there was the obvious fact that he didn't love her back. He hated her in fact, or at least that is what Whitney had convinced herself of. No matter what Gabi, Marc, Eric, or Jared tried to tell her, in her mind Jordan hated her. Why else would he date Heather? No, that was the only explanation for everything. All the name calling, hair pulling, and dating the one person in all of Thunder Bay that went out of their way to make her life miserable. Whitney was determined to never tell Jordan how she felt, it would be the end of the world.

Little did Whitney know though, the same thoughts were going through the blonde in question that and a million others about the draft. Jordan was anxious. This was the third draft he had been at but the other two he was there as family. He watched as Eric went second over all to the Hurricanes, and watched Marc go 12th to the Rangers. Unlike Eric, he hasn't seen Marc play in the NHL yet. He had a feeling his day would come. His dad always said defensive players sometimes take longer to get called up. Jordan was thankful for his family, especially his parents. His parents had always believed in him and his brothers. As cool as it would be to play with Eric, he really hoped he got picked quickly. Jordan knew that he wasn't going first. Not with Erik Johnson and Jonathan Toews also in the draft. He was good but he didn't think he was better than them. There are probably many people in the draft that are probably better than him. Jordan took a deep breath. It was time to go sit and wait with the rest of those in the draft. He was as ready as he was going to be.

Gabi gave Jordan a hug when he sat down, "It's going to be just fine bud. Promise."

"Gabi," Jordan started with a sigh. "What if I don't get picked like Whitney said?"

Gabi shook her head, "Jordan Lee, don't think like that. You'll get picked. I'm telling you ,right now, you will be one of the first five picked. Its my gut feeling."

"There are so many good players though," He started. "Johnson, Toews, Bassard, Kessel just to name a few."

She rubbed his back, "True but you are in that list too buddy. Just believe in yourself like I believe in you. Please?"

Jordan shrugged and Bettman came on to start the draft. As some had predicted Erik Johnson went number overall to the St. Louis Blues putting the Penguins on the clock. Gabi gave Jordan's hand a squeeze as Penguins General Manger came up to the stage and to the microphone.

"On behalf of the Pittsburgh Penguins Organization," Ray Shero started. "I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome to our organization from Peteborough, Jordan Staal."

Jordan stood up and hugged everyone before heading to the stage. Gabi could see the look of shock and happiness on his face. In no way did he think he would go second overall. Gabi looked over to Whit who was doing her best to look indifferent but Gabi knew what was going on in her head.

Whitney recounted the numbers in her head. Pittsburgh was over a 1,000 miles away, over a 16 hour drive. That is not somewhere she had hoped he'd end up. It was too far away from home. Granted Eric was farther but she didn't care about that. She only cared how far that giant goofball on the stage was from her. Even though she tried to hide it, she was upset. Maybe she should tell him how she felt. No, no good would come of that. He'd still be over 1,000 miles away and plus he doesn't like her. She forced a smile on her face as he slipped the Penguins' draft jersey on. Whitney may have been upset about how far away he was from home, but it didn't stop the pride from welling up inside her. Ever since they were little all Jordan talked about was being drafted into the NHL and winning a cup. Today he achieved step one of the dream, and as she thought that she heard Eric tell a reporter the same thing she was thinking. She looked over at the Staal family, her second family, and saw how happy everyone was. Jordan was going to play in the NHL and one day bring home a cup just like Eric had done. Gabi gave her a hug and Whit hugged back. Today marked the start of something new and Whit was scared, nervous and a bit anxious. The thought of telling Jordan how she felt crossed her mind again and she shook it off. No, she would never do that.

Jordan did his interviews, answered all the questions they asked. He was going to Pittsburgh. He was going to play with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. He was going to play on the team owned by NHL legend Mario Lemieux. Ray Shero had picked him instead of Jonathan Toews or Phil Kessel. The rookie GM saw great things from him. He hoped he lived up to what Ray saw. He hoped he lived up to what everyone saw. Jordan still wasn't sure if he was worthy of a number two pick, but he was going to try his hardest to help Pittsburgh win. All these thoughts were stopped by a look at one person, how was he going to tell her now? Pittsburgh was so far from Thunder Bay, what if she didn't want to come with him or worse what if she didn't feel the same? He took a deep breath, no, he couldn't think of that right now. Today was the draft and he just got drafted, so it was time to celebrate.
