Chapter 28

I wake up about an hour before my alarm. We’re going to Toronto for a game tonight then we’re staying over until Monday before we fly out west to Vancouver. We will stay in Vancouver for the night then play them the next night. It’s a pretty long trip and we’re spending a lot of it in Toronto. I guess they want to have a couple days there before we head off to Vancouver. It gives Reid a bit more time with his father, before I get there. My plan is to stay in my room as much as possible and work.
I packed my bags last night so I’m all ready to leave. I decide going back to bed isn’t an option. I throw the covers off and head into the washroom. I throw my hair up on top of my head in a high bun before doing my morning routine. Once I’ve finished washing my face I go downstairs to the kitchen. I make myself coffee and turn on the TV. I play the sports channel in the background. I catch the end of the match up for this evenings hockey games. I just happened to miss our since it would be one of the first talked about match ups and I tuned in right at the end of hockey. I turn the sound up just a bit. As I wait for the next round of hockey to come on I move over to the bar to pack up some of the paper work I need to take with me on to these games. I get my laptop and charger and put it in the bag. I check the clock. I’ve got tons of time before I have to leave for the airport so I pop a bagel into the toaster. I pour myself another cup of coffee before the bagel finishes toasting. I get the cream cheese out and spread it on my bagel. I sit down at the bar with my breakfast right as the hockey mach ups come back on the screen. Once I finish eating my breakfast I decide that I will leave early and stop at the Barnes and Nobel on the way to the plane. I haven’t read any books in the longest time and I figure this long trip out west before I get be with Reid again is the perfect time to start readings something new.
I pack all my bags in the car and lock up the house, turning the alarm on before I go. I drive over to the Barnes and Nobel. I get there just a bit after they opened. I don’t have much time, but I’m sure finding something to read won’t take me very long. I go inside and start wandering around. I’m looking through the tables just inside the door when someone comes up to me.
“Can I help you with anything?” A younger woman asks. She can’t be much older than me.
“I’m not really sure.” I say honestly. “I haven’t read anything in awhile.”
“What kinds of books are you interested in?” She asks. I think for a minute.
“To be honest, I still like to read Young Adult Fiction.” I say. I hope she doesn’t think I’m crazy. I’m really not that old though. I’m only twenty-five.
“Have you read the new Twilight book?” She asks.
“What?” I ask looking at her with wide eyes. “A new Twilight book?”
“I’ll take that as a no.” She says trying to hide her amusement. “Come with me.”
“Alright.” I say as I follow her through the store back to the Young Adult section, which is huge. She stops in front of a huge shelf. I see the twilight books right away. They always stood out to me. I read them back when they first came out and I was in high school. How long ago was that?
“It’s the tenth anniversary of when Twilight came out.” She explains. “Stephanie Meyer decided to put out a new book.”
“Is this the one written in Edwards point of view?” I ask excitedly. I remember wishing she would publish that book back when I first read them.
“Sadly no, but this book is a re-imagined version of Twilight.” She says pulling the book off the shelf. I look at her with a face of probable confusion. “It’s written from a male point of view yes, but Bella is now male and Edward is now female.”
“That’s interesting.” I say as she hands me the book. I flip it around noticing that Twilight is on the other side. I try to remember where my copies of the books are. Somewhere in soft cover beaten up back in Vancouver at my mothers house.
“Do you have all these in hard cover?” I ask.
“I do actually.” She says. “Let me get those for you.”
“Thank you.” I say. She pulls the other three books off the shelf in hard cover. I go to take them from her.
“I’ve got it.” She says.
“Are you sure?” I ask.
“Yes.” She says smiling at me. We walk together to the front of the store where the cash registers are. She puts the books down at one of the terminals and I put the one I was carrying on top of the other pile. I had no idea that I would want to get these books and read them again. I can feel the anticipation building in my stomach. I can’t wait to get on the plane and relax on the short flight to Toronto and start re-reading Twilight. After I pay for the books and thank the woman probably thirty times I pick up my bag off the counter and walk back out to my car. I put the books into my carry on bag, which has a ton of room because I carry so many other bags with the paper work that my carry on bag just has my laptop and some snacks. I zip the bag shut and get into the car.
I get to the plane with plenty of time. I’m one of the first ones here. I can tell Sid and James both aren’t here yet, which is really good for me. I see Brandon’s car and assume he’s already on the plane. I quickly get my bags checked, except for my carry on. I go to board the plane. I spot Brandon halfway back on the plane sitting alone. He’s in the isle seat side. He sees me as I approach him and he smiles wide.
“Hey.” I say stopping in front of him.
“Hey.” He says grinning back at me.
“Is that seat taken?” I ask eyeing the seat next to him. The last thing I need is for Sid to ask me to sit with him. I don’t want James to be upset and I don’t want to have to turn Sid down and upset him. It’s better if I’m already sitting with Brandon when they both arrive.
“No, I was hoping you would sit with me actually.” He says. I smile.
“Great.” I say. I move past him into the empty window seat. I sit down with a sigh.
“Avoiding someone?” He asks. I chuckle.
“I guess you could say that.” I say. “Actually don’t say that.”
“My lips are sealed.” He says faking locking up his lips and throwing away the key. I can’t help, but laugh, which makes him laugh.
“Thanks.” I say after a minute.
“Anytime.” He says.
“You didn’t even ask what for.” I say.
“Doesn’t matter.” He says. I smile. Brandon is so easy to be around. He doesn’t seem to care about all the drama between Sid, James and me. He just likes being able to sit with me and be friends. After not long the plane starts to fill up. I see Sid board the plane glancing around for me. His eyes finally find me, but thankfully the seats all around me are full. He takes a seat near the front of the plane. James boards a bit after and he sees me as well. He takes a seat a bit back from where Sid is, on the opposite side of the plane. I sit back in my seat and try to relax. It’s a really short flight between Pittsburgh and Toronto. I pull my phone out of my bag and see there is a text from Sid.
Sid: Why aren’t you sitting with me?
I sigh and text him back.
Me: Brandon asked me first. Sorry.
His reply is quick.
Sid: Next flight.
It’s not a question it’s a statement, which means I’d have to lie to get out of it. Great, guess I’m sitting with Sid on the next flight. I put my phone away in my bag and pull out my book. We’re just about to take off. I decide to read the books from the beginning before reading the new one. I start on the Twilight side of the book. After we take off I’m already wrapped up in the book.
It takes me back to high school. That isn’t something I really let myself think about all that much. I wasn’t very popular in high school. My older siblings always were. They had many friends and played sports. I was nerdy I guess you could say. I got good grades, I had one or two friends and I read all the time. I was fat and got bullied a lot. I try to push those thoughts from my mind. My life is great now. If I hadn’t worked hard in school I never would have this job at this age. I’m very lucky. I get engrossed in the book and lose track of time. By the time I look up from the book we’re landing in Toronto. That was quick. I look at the page number on the book and I’m almost two hundred pages in already. I guess I’m a faster reader than I thought. I put the book away and get ready to land. I have the rest of the day planned out already and it involves avoiding two of the guys on this plane.
