When she says baby

" Baby I got us supper!" Sidney yells from the front door.

"Be right down baby!" I yell coming downstairs in a pair of Reebok shorts, Sidney's personalized Team Canada hoodie and a pair of flip flops.

" Mmm, smells delicious baby." I say leaning on the counter peering at the Chinese food.

Sidney dishes up our dinner and brings it out over the living room and sit's down beside me on the couch handing me my plate which consisted of ginger beef and beef and broccoli.

" Mmm thanks baby." I say leaning over to give Sidney a kiss on the cheek.

Sidney and I sit in silence enjoying our dinner and watching TV. When Sidney and I finish I take our plates to the sink and return to the couch and snuggle into Sidney’s side.

“ So baby, I have something to ask you…” I said quietly, nervous about his reaction.

“ Anything for you, Sarah.” Sidney says rubbing my side and kissing my head.

“ Well, I’ve been thinking about it and I want to get a tattoo.” I say looking up at Sidney .

“ Oh wow. That’s uh- that’s a shock.” Sidney says looking bewildered.

“ Sidney, I was wondering if you would come with me when I get it. You know just in case I get nervous and need someone there with me.”

“ I’d love to babe.” Sidney say’s giving me a kiss on the top of my head pulling me close.

Today’s the day.
I’m sitting on the tattoo chair waiting for the tattoo artist to come in and begin tattooing, Sidney is sitting beside me holding my hand and lightly making conversation, when the tattoo artist comes in with my sketch.

“ Okay Sarah, ready to start?”
“ Absolutely Ryan!”

I can feel Sidney tense up beside me when the tattoo artist, Ryan, fires up his needle and brings it down to the underside of my forearm beginning to tattoo me. I look over at Sidney and give him a smile and a reassuring hand squeeze.

“ Does it hurt?” Sidney asks halfway through the process.

“ Nah, just stings a little.” I say giving him a smile attempting to ease his nerves.

Two hours later my tattoo is finally done and I couldn’t be more excited to show it to Sidney.
“ Are you ready baby?” I ask Sidney once we get to my Jeep and buckle in.

“ Am I ready?! Sarah it’s been three hours! Of course I’m ready!!” Sidney says sounding like little kid at Christmas time.
I unwrap my arm and show Sidney my first ever tattoo. He gasps and his eyes bulge out when he sees it.

“ Oh my God, Sarah that’s amazing! It looks incredible!” Sidney says looking at the tattoo I got in memory of my brother Alexandre.
My tattoo is of the lighthouse on Saint-Antoine’s harbor that Alexandre and I always went to when we were little kid, to the right of it in black cursive lettering it says “Toujours dans mon coeur. Éternellement sur mon esprit. “ ( Always in my heart. Forever on my mind.) and underneath that is the date Alexandre passed away, 03-20-04.
I translate the sentences for Sidney and I see his eyes well with tears.
“ Sarah,” Sidney can’t even finish his sentence before he’s crying and pulling me in to a tight embrace, both of us crying over my brother.
“ I wish you could of met him, babe.” I whisper, my head buried in the crook of Sidney’s neck.
“ Me too baby girl.”
“ I love you Sidney.”
“ I love you to Sarah. I love you so much.” Sid says kissing me.
