Chapter 10

Around five the next day, my phone rings and I get up from the couch to answer, “Hello?”

“Hey, Brooklyn, it’s Vero,” Damn, I forgot Vero and Caro-Lynn wanted to go out tonight. “I was just wondering if you still wanted to watch the game. We were debating on where to watch it.”

I try not to groan and remember that these women just want to include me. Really, Vero and Carol-Lynn see extremely nice just a little different than I’m used to. And even though the prospect of a night in doesn’t sound like the most appealing thing, I know that I have to give this a try. “You know, y’all can actually come over here to watch it. I have more than enough room and we can order room service. It will be great.”

“That sounds like fun. I’ll call Carol-Lynn and we will be over in about an hour.”

With that she hangs up and I look around my suite. I’ve spent the entire day lounging around, so I have dishes piling up in the kitchen and clothes strewn haphazardly around. I groan and then send a quick text to Sidney, Vero and Carol-Lynn are coming over to watch the game. Try not to make them feel too inadequate about their husbands

Surprisingly his reply is almost instant, I’m glad you’re hanging out with them. I promise I’ll try to only score a goal or two.

I laugh, Whatever you say superstar. Good Luck.

Resisting the urge to call housekeeping I heave myself off of my couch and make quick work of tidying up my hotel suite. Once that’s done I hop in the shower. By the time I’m dressed and presentable it’s almost six. I decide to throw on Sidney’s jersey and take a seat in front of the TV starting to feel a little nervous. God, get together, it’s not a first date. These are just girls, girls who are obviously important to Sidney and part of his life. And they probably know more about Sidney than I can even imagine. Not to mention that Sidney considers these women part of the Penguins family and if I want to be with Sidney I need to be friends with them. With that thought I make the executive decision that we need wine, lots and lots of wine. I call room service and order a few bottles and then take out wine glasses. The doorbell rings while I’m in the kitchen and I run over to answer it. Sure enough Vero and Carol-Lynn are on the other side. Smiling I open the door, “Welcome Ladies!” We exchange quick hugs and I lead them into my suite.

Vero and Carol-Lynn look around, “You have this entire place to yourself?” I nod and Vero continues. “It is absolutely gorgeous, I’m so jealous. My home is always and absolute mess.”

I laugh, “Well, you should have been here an hour ago and then you could have helped me clean.” We take a seat on the couch in front of the TV and I see that the pregame has already started. “So I took the liberty of ordering wine so that should be here soon, but what do y’all want to eat?”

Looking at the menu we all decide on about one of everything, especially the desserts. When the doorbell rings I place our order and pick up the wine, pouring glasses for each of us. About an hour and a half later the first period just ended and it might be the most boring hockey game I’ve ever watched and judging by Vero and Carol-Lynn’s expressions they agree with me. “Well, I’m just going to say it. I’m bored.” They both look at me shocked and then laugh with me. “We should go out tonight. I mean you are kids free and it’s a Saturday.” They don’t look convinced. “When was the last time you went out to a club without the guys?”

Vero answers quietly, “It’s been years.”

I get up and refill each of our wine glasses, “Exactly. I’ll get us into the nicest club and the VIP room. We’ll dress up get drunk, maybe dance with some questionable men. And then we will all come home and eat more pizza than we should. Doesn’t that sound fun?”

They both look a little unsure at first and Carol-Lynn takes a rather large sip from her wine glass and then nods. “I haven’t had a true girls night in forever, like in college remember? Now all that we do is babysit and go out dinner. Brooklyn, let’s go out!”

I smile and then we both turn to Vero who still looks unsure. We both continue to stare until Vero finally smiles, “Okay, fine! But I have nothing to wear.”

“Ladies, not to brag, but I’m an actress. My closet is full of clothes that I never wear; I would be delighted if you would wear them.” We turn off the TV and I lead them to my bedroom. I point out my closest and we disappear inside.

“Oh my god, is this heaven?” Vero is wondering through my purses.

My shoes captivate Carol-Lynn on the other hand, “I have never seen so many Louboutins before.”

I laugh and turn on my iPhone and Katy Perry starts to flow through the speakers. Clothes and wine will unite any women in the world, more so than a hockey game and with this in mind I grab more wine and the girls start to go through my closest. “Please try anything on!”

After much giggling and fashion shows the three of us are ready about an hour and a half later. I wear a short grey skirt with a white gauze button up with the first buttons undone and a pair of peep-toe nude heels. Vero chooses to wear a black sheath skirt with an emerald green chiffon top tucked in at the waist. She looks gorgeous and her legs go on for days and days. “You look great hun!”

She laughs, “Marc would kill me if he knew I was wearing this out while he is gone.”

Carol-Lynn emerges from my closet next and I gasp. She is wearing quite possibly the tightest black jeans I own with my black sky high heels, along with a tan peplum top with a deep v. “Holy shit, Carol-Lynn you look amazing.”

“It feels great to finally be dressed up again,” she looks at me. “Thank you so much, we’ve already had so much fun.

The doorbell rings and we cheer realizing that more wine has arrived. I walk to the door and greet the bellboy. Before he leaves I ask him to take a quick picture of the three of us. We all smile and assume the universal akimbo position every girl takes in every photo.

It’s about ten and the three of us are all laughing and enjoying ourselves. “I called ahead, the club knows we are coming. Should we turn on the game and catch the last few minutes?”

We are all quiet for a second and then simultaneously we all say no. Instead we scroll through the movie channels. “Oh pick that one, I love that movie!” Carol-Lynn who has control of the remote selects it and I realize that it’s one of my movies. When I come on the screen it takes the two of them a moment to realize, “Wait, is that ever weird? Seeing yourself on the TV?”

I take a sip of my drink, “I don’t watch my own movies so it’s usually not a problem.” On the screen I’m being saved by Chris Evans as Captain America and we share a passionate kiss. I groan. “Please can we change the channel?”

They both laugh and happily oblige, “I can’t believe you got to kiss him! He is so attractive.”

“Kissing scenes really aren’t that glamorous, it kind of gets tedious,” I lean closer to each of them. “Sex scenes on the other hand, lots and lots of fun. For Game of Thrones I had to do some pretty intense ones.”

“But weren’t you nervous?”

I nod, “At the beginning of course, but eventually you get used to it and accept the fact that you are getting paid to make out with an extremely attractive men.”

We are all silent for a moment and the TV is the only sound in the room. Vero coughs, “But really how is Sidney?” My mouth drops in slight shock while Carol-Lynn gasps. “Oh, please don’t tell me that you’ve never thought about it Carol-Lynn!”

I laugh, “Oh hun, it’s, I can’t find the words to do it justice, but just know it’s great, like really great. That man is all muscle I still think I’m a little sore from earlier this week. And don't even get me started on his lips or that ass.” Again it’s silent and then Vero pours us each another full glass of wine.

“God bless you Brooklyn,” we all laugh and decide that we should head out. Honestly, I’m not sure if Pittsburgh is ready to deal with the three of us.

******
I’m in the locker room after the loss. The game just felt off, we were all sluggish and for lack of a better word a little bit lazy. Dan already spoke to us as well as the press. I checked my phone and notice that Brooklyn sent me a text, You win some, you lose some. See you soon.

The simple text brought a smile to my face, much like everything that Brooklyn does. I make eye contact with Flower as we line up walking to the bus, “Hopefully, the girls weren’t too bored watching the game tonight.”

Flower nods and then I hear Neal snort, “I don’t think Brooklyn or Vero really watched the game tonight.”

“What do you mean?” Neal walks over and pulls up his Instagram and I notice that Brooklyn has posted a few photos. The first one is of Carol-Lynn sitting in what I’m assuming is Brooklyn’s closet surrounded by shoes and clothes, with the hashtag #newfriends.

“So? There is always some down time,” Neal shakes his head and then scrolls up and the next photo is of Brooklyn, Vero and Carol-Lynn all dressed up. This one has a caption, Look out Pittsburgh, here we come! #ladiesnight

“What is Vero wearing?” Flower is referring to the skin tight skirt that shows off Vero’s assets. And I can’t help but laugh. He glares at me. “Your girlfriend is a terrible influence.”

Duper comes over as well to look at the photos and lets out a low whistle, “Damn, I’m a lucky man. I’m glad the girls are having fun tonight, it was a shit game anyways.”

Just then Neal’s phone beeps and it shows that Brooklyn just tweeted. He opens it and it is a photo of Brooklyn and Vero on top of a table dancing in a club and smiling at the camera. Flower and I both look at each other incredulously. I just shake my head, “I can’t believe this.”

“Neither can I mon ami, but Vero looks happier than she has in a while. Thank your girlfriend for me man.”

We are on the bus and I decide to send Brooklyn a quick text.

*******
The music is loud in the club, the three of us have been here for a few hours and are having a blast. Turns out that Carol-Lynn and Vero party hard and I’m having a lot of fun. Men buy us drinks all night and we each take turns dancing. My head starts to swim though so I navigate my way back to our table and check my phone. Sidney sent me a new message about an hour ago, Neal showed me few pictures, looks like you’re having fun. Our plane will land in Pittsburgh in an hour. If you’re not too hung over call me in the morning

Vero notices that I’m not dancing any longer and joins me at our table, “What’s wrong?”

“Sidney sent me a text message. He might be mad, I don’t know,” I look at the time. “Shit! We have to go, the guys plane probably just landed.”

Vero looks at me conspiratorially, “Unless, we have a sleepover at your place. My daughter is having a sleepover and Carol-Lynn’s kids are as well. Neither of us has to be home. Please, I don’t want this night to end!”

“Fine, but we have to call the guys from the cab,” with that we round up Carol-Lynn and the three of us stumble out the side exit. Unsurprisingly paparazzi are there screaming and asking for photos. The club’s security helps the three of us get into the cab without incident.

Once inside Vero turns to me, “Does that happen everywhere?”

I shake my head, “Sometimes, but it really just depends.”

Back at the hotel we order pizza and promptly pass out on the couches in my living room.

Excessive knocking and ringing wake me up the next morning. I groan and open my eyes in an attempt to get my bearings. I think that I can actually feel my brain. Vero and Carol-Lynn are passed out across from me on the two couches in front of the TV, which is still on. Somehow I ended up in the recliner last night. My neck and a number of other bones crack as I stretch. Then the knocking continues and I realize that I have to get up to stop it. My two companions are starting to stir. In my effort to get up I end up falling off the chair with a thump. As I walk towards the door I pull down my skirt and pray that my makeup isn’t too dreadful from the night before. A quick look in the peephole reveals that Sidney, Marc-Andre and Pascal are all outside of the door. I take a deep breath before I open the door and pray that I look less hung over than I feel.

******
Flower, Pascal and I are outside of Brooklyn’s suite frantically knocking and calling; none of the girls came home last night and we haven’t heard from them. Finally we hear someone turning the lock and the door opens. Brooklyn looks terrible. She is still in last night clothes and her hair and makeup are all over the place. I try to contain my smile as she greets us with a slight slur, “Morning guys, how was your flight?”

“Good, how was your night?” I talk loudly intentionally and see her wince.

“You know, pretty good. I think we are all in one piece,” She opens the door wider and the three of us step into the entryway. I scan the area and the place is a disaster. Empty plates are everywhere along with at least four empty wine bottles. Bending down I pick up a jacket that didn’t make it very far and put it over the nearest chair.

Duper speaks first, “Is my wife alive?”

Brooklyn nods and gestures vaguely to the living room, “Vero is there too.” She then disappears into the kitchen and I follow her.

“So what did you think of the game?”

She is making coffee or at least trying to, “Sidney, we both know I saw very little of your game. Forgive me?”

“I suppose I can, someone once told me I have like 70 more or something right?”

She laughs and then winces, “I have not been this hungover in a very long time. My body wants all of the greasy food I can eat.”

I take the coffee maker from her and start brewing some, “Well, how about I treat you to brunch?”

She smiles and leans into me, “That actually sounds amazing.” She leans into kiss me and I pull away, “What?”

“You should really brush your teeth,” she smacks my arm and then the others join us. “How are you guys feeling.”

Both Vero and Carol-Lynn groan and I notice that Brooklyn wasn’t the only one who didn’t make it out of her clothes last night, “I don’t think I can every go out with you again Brooklyn, too many people bought us drinks.”

“Don’t blame me for all of that, plenty of guys bought drinks for you two. Y’all looked hot last night.” Vero and Carol-Lynn smiled. “Wait, do you remember when that guy came up to Vero and said that..”

We don’t hear the rest because the girls are all dying of laughter, “Oh my god I almost forgot. That was great!”

All us guys exchange a look and then Marc speaks up, “This has been great but your cousin is dropping off Estelle in about an hour. We have to go.” Duper says something to the same effect. And the girls all disappear into Brooklyn’s bedroom to change.

When they come back they are laughing about something else and Duper and Flower have to practically drag their wives out. The three of them share one last hug and Vero smiles, “This is the REAL WAG association love. We’re so happy to have you.”

She is laughing when she closes the door, “I really am sorry I missed the game last night, I just needed something to break the ice.” She walks over to me and I pull her into me.

“You had fun and it seems like Carol-Lynn and Vero love you so it’s all good,” I place a quick kiss on her forehead. Brooklyn changed into sweatpants and a long sleeved shirt. “You look to comfortable to go anywhere today. How about we stay here and have a lazy Sunday?”

“My head thanks you, how about a movie marathon?”
