I Let You In, Now What?

A Walk Down Memory Lane

It’s two in the afternoon and my nerves are already shot. I’ve been pacing the length of my apartment since I got home at noon. I’m incapable of keeping my mind occupied at this point it seems. Adam’s plane doesn’t arrive in Boston until five, and then I have to wait until he finally gets back to the apartment building. He’s been spending time back home with his family the past couple weeks, and I’ve actually really missed him. Although, I am glad I declined his offer to join him up there for a week. It’s definitely still too soon to meet the parents. We’ve been dating about two months now, but he’s been away for almost half of that so I think we need more time. Of course, it helps that we were best friends before dating, but still. I want us both to be 100% sure this is going to work out long term. That’s what we had decided we both wanted after that lovely drunken night of sex. This distance has also been good practice for what it’s going to be like once the new season is in full swing. While Adam has been gone we’ve texted intermittently throughout the days and talked on the phone before bed almost every night. It hasn’t been too bad. I just hope he has missed me as much as I have missed him. I finally go sit in my living room and turn on the television. It’s just background noise, though, because I’m distracted by the memory of our last date before Adam left.

*Roughly a month ago*

“Wear something nice,” he says over the phone.

I scoff at his lack of specific information, “How nice are we talking? Nice as in a cute shirt and pants, or nice as in a dress?”

It’s silent a moment before he replies, “Nice as in a dress. Definitely wear a dress.”

“You just want to see me in a dress,” I tease, “but anyways where are we going?”

Adam chuckles, “Yes I do, especially if it’s the short green one, and where we’re going is a surprise.”

“Actually, I just bought a new dress the other day that puts the green one to shame.” I say.

The green dress in question is one of my, and apparently Adam’s, favorites. It’s emerald green with thick straps and a flirty skirt that reaches just above my knees. The back is a mess of crisscrossed straps that stops at my lower back and there are thin black flower designs all around the bottom edge of the dress. It’s very fun.

“Well now you really have my attention. What does this new dress look like?” he asks.

“It’s a surprise.” I reply simply.

I can hear Adam’s deep laugh over the phone, “I guess that’s fair, but I don’t know if my patience is that good today.”

“It’s going to have to be,” I state firmly, “because I have to go start getting ready now for my ‘surprise’ date. You’ll get to see my ‘surprise’ dress in a couple hours.”

I hang up with a grin on my face. I may not know where we’re going, but Adam has absolutely no idea what he’s getting into with the dress. I specifically found this dress for tonight because I planned on making sure he left for Cornwall with a very pleasant image. Two hours later and I’m putting the final touches on the whole outfit. The dress is a strapless, scarlet number that’s mid length. It has a black bustier stitching design on the bodice and a thigh high front slit. The stretchy scuba knit fabric hugs every curve and really shows my hourglass shape. I’ve also put on a pair of black peep toe mega platform high heels that show my cute metallic silver toenail polish. My short hair is sleek and pin straight, and I have on black eyeliner with mascara and shimmery gray eye shadow on top. I throw on some simple silver jewelry and decide to go with a medium nude lipstick. There is a knock on the door just in time.

I open the door and give Adam a very long once over, “Well don’t you look dapper.”

That’s an understatement though because he is looking drop dead sexy. His short hair is gelled back to keep his curls in check and he’s perfectly clean shaven. He’s wearing a fitted charcoal gray suit with a black button down. His tie is black, but has very thin white diagonal lines going down it. He looks absolutely delicious.

“And you look gorgeous, though you always do,” he says pulling me in for a kiss.

I give him a quick peck on the lips and pull away, “Don’t want to ruin the lipstick! Come on, let’s go.”

I grab my purse and keys as we head out the door. We end up at Top of the Hub on Boylston Street. Adam definitely came through with the surprise. I had heard the food was amazing and the view amazing at any time of day. It doesn’t disappoint.

“This place is fabulous,” I say in wonder.

Adam smiles as he takes a sip of wine, “Glad you like it.”

“So,” I say as I lean over the table a little, “what do you think about my own surprise?”

“I think I found my new favorite,” he says as his eyes roam.

The food arrives and it tastes like heaven. The date as a whole is great as we eat and talk about anything and everything.I like that we still have things to talk about. It’s never a dull moment. We finish eating and I gaze out onto the Boston skyline. The sun is setting and we probably couldn’t be in a more romantic place.

“Dance with me?” Adam asks.

I look over and realize he is standing above me with his hand out for me to take.

I look at his hand, “Seriously?”

He laughs, “Yes, seriously. I want to dance with you.”

“Alright then,” I say as I take his hand.

Adam leads me over to where a few other couples are dancing to the slow jazz band playing. He wraps an arm around my waist and pulls me close while grabbing my hand with the other. I put my other arm around his neck and look up at him. I really enjoy the fact that he’ll always be taller no matter what I wear for shoes. We gaze into each other’s eye a while just enjoying the music. We sway across the dance floor as I lean my head onto his shoulder.

“I’m going to miss you,” he finally says.

I sigh, “I’ll miss you too, but you need to see your family, and you’ll be back in no time.”

“I know,” he says, “I just wish you’d come with me.”

“Adam…” I start.

But he interrupts before I continue, “No, I know and I agree. It’s too soon, but that doesn’t mean it still doesn’t suck.”

I smile and lean up to give him a kiss, “Thank you for being on the same page, babe.”

“Yeah yeah, you can repay me later,” he says and we continue dancing.

A couple more dances and some more wine later, we’re making our way down the hallway of our apartment building.

“Is Dougie home?” I ask.

“Yes,” he answers simply.

“Well then,” I say as I unlock my door, “I guess that means you’re coming home with me. I have a going away present for you.”

Adam looks genuinely surprised as we walk into my apartment, “You do? What is it? You didn’t have to get me anything.”

“It’s underneath my dress,” I reply and saunter towards my bedroom.

Suddenly I’m swept off my feet and Adam carries me into the room to continue our fun date night before he leaves.

*Present day*

I smile to myself. That was definitely a good night with memories that should have kept us warm the past few weeks. I look at the clock and will it to go faster. Maybe watching a movie will keep my attention away from the clock so I decide to put in The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. I snuggle into the cushions of my couch and quickly get caught up in one of my favorite movies. Towards the end of the movie I fall asleep and wake up to my phone singing ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love.’ It’s Steph.

“You messed with my ringtones again,” is my greeting.

Steph laughs, “Hello to you too. I thought it was funny.”

“It is,” I say, “but what’s up?”

“Not much. I wanted to see if you wanted to get dinner somewhere. I’m bored and Joe is out with the boys,” she says.

“I would, but Adam gets back today. Actually he should be here within the hour. Call Jen, though. Ten to one she is sitting on the couch eating ice cream and watching chick flicks.” I answer.

That’s right,” Steph pokes fun, “lover boy returns and you guys need to make up for lost times.”

I giggle, “Oh hush, you and Joe are usually attached at the hip and you’ve only been dating a month!”

“What can I say? He keeps me more than satisfied baby,” she says lewdly.

I gag, “Ew, too much info. Seriously, call Jen. She needs to get out and be around people again.”

“Is she still that upset?” Steph asks with concern.

“Yeah,” I reply, “I probably would be too if I found out I had inadvertently gotten into a relationship with a married man. And he had the audacity to try to keep her with him, even though he said he’d never leave his wife. Tried to tell Jen that he and his wife had an ‘arrangement.’ Fucking bullshit and I’m glad Jen finally saw through it.”

Steph scoffs in disgust, “Me too. If I ever see that prick, I will kick him in the nuts. I’ll call her though. If anyone can get her ass up, it’s me.”

“Good,” I say, “I’ll talk to you later. Let’s try to plan lunch later this week though, okay?”

“Works for me,” Steph replies, “Have fun getting naked! Love you girl.”

I laugh, “Oh I will. Love you too, bye.”

The mention of food has made me hungry so I go get a snack from my kitchen. I look at the clock on my stove. Time has managed to fly by, and now it was 6:00pm. But where is Adam? No sooner had the question left my mind, there was a knock on my door.

“Who is it?” I ask as I practically run to the door.

“Special delivery,” replies a familiar voice from the other side of the door.

Arms envelop me as soon as I open it, and I hug back ferociously. God I had missed this feeling. I just hope Adam had too.

I smile and look up into his face, “You’re late.”

“I know,” he says as he walks into the house, “but Dougie had to stop and get food. He said it was life or death.”

“That doesn’t surprise me,” I giggle and wrap my arms around Adam’s neck.

He grabs my waist, “Did you miss me?”

“Of course,” I answer, “but did you miss me?”

Suddenly his lips are on mine and I sink into the heated kiss. I weave my fingers through his unruly hair and nibble on his bottom lip. Adam let’s out a low growl while his hands cup my bottom, and he picks me up off the ground. I wrap my legs around his waist and just get lost in the sensation of having him home.

“Does that answer your question?” Adam asks trying to catch his breath.

I smirk, “Not really. I think you’re going to have to do a bit more convincing.”

Walking towards my bedroom with me still wrapped around him, Adam scoffs, “I think I can handle that.”

I don’t know why I was ever worried.

Notes

And the story continues! I've had this first chapter written for a while not, but inspiration finally hit to keep the story going. I'm going to do my best to post one chapter a week, but if I miss a week then I apologize now. I've already gotten the next two or so chapters done so there shouldn't be a problem as long as I keep myself ahead of the curve. Hope you like it.
