Come Closer

It was about 5am when I got to the hotel, the lobby was completely silent except for two young receptionists gossiping about hot boys and the newest makeup products. I got into the elevator and started looked for my room key. It was nowhere to be found. I knocked on the door feeling really bad about waking up Khloe. I knocked so silently that you could barely hear it. Finally I heard footsteps coming toward the door.

“Why is house kee…Meghan” she looked stunned to see me “What are you doing here, I thought you are at James’?” she said almost closing the door behind her so it was only her and I in the hallway.

“James and I had a fight so I left”, I started to cry and pushed through her to get into the room so no one would hear me sobbing.

“Paul…” I saw him laying down in Khloe’s bed obviously with no shirt, I did not want to know what was going on under the covers.

“Khloe I can get another room if you want some space.”

“No…no” Paul said “we were finished anyway”

“Gross you two.”

“What happed with James” they both asked.

“No offence guys but I just want to get some sleep.” I told them as I went into the bathroom to change into some pj pants.

“Alright, you need anything we are here.” Khloe said.

“Yeah, to close for comfort.” I turned over and immediately fell asleep.

James just laid awake for the rest of the night staring at the ceiling playing those last few minutes in his head.

“I shouldn’t have said anything…what have I done” he said talking to himself.

“Maybe Meghan was right, I haven’t changed.” His eyes started to water and a small tear came from his eye.

“She wants a husband and a family. I really want to give that to her, but am I the best man for it? They say old habits die hard and cheating is the last thing I want to do to her.”
“No James stop it” telling himself “secretly I want to have children and I’m not getting any younger. I have to tell her that. I’m not going to lose her again.”

“Are you kidding” I had just told Khloe about when Brendan came to James ‘house. “He needs to back off”

“Yeah, I know.”

After that I told her about the fight with James.

“So he told you that he has slept with a lot of girls…while he was still inside of you?”

Paul left before I woke up so clearly I was in a deep hibernation. Khloe and I decided to go to the gym to play pepper, a volleyball drill meant for two people.

“Yeah, if that’s not a boner killer than I don’t know what is.” Hitting the ball a little harder that time. “I got pissed off and left…but I did say something that I shouldn’t have.”

“What’s that” Khloe said stopping the play.

“I told him he was a changed man, and not for the better.” No Meghan don’t cry again I told myself.

“Uh oh, so what do you think the next step is?” Khloe tossed the ball to me and we resumed playing.

“No idea, a part of me wants to run to him and apologize, and the other part just wants to leave him and wait for “Mister Right”… I’m not getting any younger Khloe.”

“I know hun, but things always work out” she came over and gave me a hug “I promise.”

It was just around 6 in the evening; Paul was taking Khloe out on a date before they leave on a road trip tomorrow. I decided to go back to the gym and practice by myself. Volleyball is the best kind of therapy. I thought a lot about James when I was practicing. While I was serving I saw someone come into the gym.

It was Brendan.

“What are you doing here Brendan?” I asked him not stopping my serves.

“I came to practice.”

“I call bullshit; you’re a coach not a player. What are you actually doing here?”

“I came to apologize about last night; I was drunk and wasn’t thinking straight and I just want you to be happy, and if James makes you happy then I’m happy for you.” I saw a look of honesty, he was sincerely sorry.

“Thank-you Brendan, that means a lot.”

He gave me a hug and left. Not even 3 minutes later I saw James walk into the gym.

“Can I play?” his voice soft.

“James…”

“Listen Meghan, I’m sorry about what happened. I have done a lot of thinking since you left and I realize that I can’t live that lifestyle anymore, I wanted to tell you that I am ready to start a serious relationship and you know that I love you more than anything.”

“I think I owe you an apology, I should have not jumped to conclusions like that…and I’m sorry.”

James made his way toward me to give me a kiss but I backed away.

“What’s wrong” he said, looking worried.

“You can kiss me after I kick your ass at Volleyball” I nodded my head for him to go on the other side of the net.

“Oh, so you want to play this game Fuller.”

“You bet your ass I do Neal.”

I beat James at a one-on-one game.

“James you still suck.” I told him as he came into kiss me, this time I let him.

This time he came up to my room, instead of me going up to his.
