Burning Gold

Prologue

“Lily, could we talk outside?” The older man in the doctor’s coat said with a smile on his face. But that was his job, to always be happy in front of the kids, in front of Sam.
“Sure” Lily half smiled back, fully knowing that stepping outside meant hearing news that would be the exact opposite of positive. “Sam, I’ll be back in a few okay?” He nodded, keeping his eyes glued to the iPad that was playing the highlights from the Chicago Blackhawks game that had occurred the night before.
She lightly kissed the top of his hairless head.
“Blink Sam.” She half laughed, sliding away from him and off the hospital bed. He looked up at her briefly as she made her big blue eyes overly wide, blinking obnoxiously a couple times. His mouth formed into a grin, laughing lightly.
Lily followed the Doctor as he held the clipboard to his chest.
“This way, Miss Martin.” He walked through the white walls that were decorated with colorful paintings and drawings, indicating that they were still in the children's centre of the hospital. Slowly however, the paintings and color faded to white. Soon a door was opened by the doctor, ‘Conference Room’ was sprawled across the door and inside Lily found a large table with multiple seats surrounding a table. “Please have a seat.” Doctor Irwin pulled out a chair for her. She took the seat, pulling it under her quite far, her stomach was touching the table.
“As you know, the results would be in from Sam’s last batch of tests would be in today. We did another cell count and his red blood cell levels are still way to low while his white blood cells are rising. After last round of chemo didn’t go the way we wanted it to.”
“It didn’t work.” Lily whispered to herself, looking down at her hands, feeling her eyes water like they had every time she was in this room.
“I’m sorry Lily, we thought it would.”
“So what do we do?” She cut him off, refusing to receive the pity.
“The cancer is still progressing, it’s only gotten stronger.” He said calmly. Lily’s hands were shaking as she was hearing the news she dreaded to hear from day one of this.
“So you’re giving up on him? I’ll find another doctor who won’t.” She snapped back.
“Lily, this is a time to make a choice, we can put him through another round of chemo, which likely will just worsen his condition, or…” He paused, taking in a deep breath as if already regretting what he was about to say “You can let him enjoy the time he has left with you.”
“How long?” Was all she could manage to say through her blubbering tears.
“With the way the cancer is progressing, we’re looking at anywhere between 6 months to a year. I’m so sorry Lily. I know he was your last bit of family.”
“How exactly am I supposed to tell my 9 year old brother that he’s going to die in a year?” She looked up at him for the first time she had entered the room, her bloodshot eyes were still crying and would soon swell from the tears.
“We have people here; they can help you help him.” He pulled out a few Kleenex’s and handed them her way. “I’m sorry.”
