Burning Gold

Chapter 2

It took a couple hours for Sam to meet the rest of the team, all of the men were nothing but friendly to him, answering his questions and making him laugh constantly.
By 4 pm, Sam was taking a much needed nap so he could watch the movie that the nurses played every night in the play room.
“I’ll be back, Sam.” Lily whispered to him, kissing his forehead before leaving the room, in search for his Doctor. “Excuse me; do you know where Doctor Irwin is? I just have a couple questions for him.” She leaned over the counter talking to the nurse that sat behind it.
“He’s having a word with one of the hockey players, just turn left at the corner.” She smiled back at Lily.
“Thanks.” Lily turned and followed the direction given. As she turned the corner she laid her eyes on Sam’s doctor talking to Jonathan Toews. As she began walking up, the two turned to face her as if expecting her presence.
“Ah, Lily, I was just about to get the nurse to send you this way. I’ve actually got some very exciting news.”
“Funny enough I was actually looking for you.” Lily stood with the two.
“It seems as though Jonathan Toews has taken a certain liking to your little brother.” The Doctor continued. Lily glanced at both the doctor and Jonathan, noticing that Jon never took his eyes off of her.
“He’s a great kid, Lily.” Lily didn’t know why but hearing her name come out of the captain’s mouth sent electric shocks throughout her body. “I just wanted to know if there was a possibility to get him out of the hospital for a day and get him to a game.”
“You don’t have to, Jonathan.” Lily blushed at his generous offer.
“No, I want to. It’s just up to the big man.” Jonathan turned to the Doctor, placing his hand on the doctor’s shoulder.
“Keeping Sam’s illness in mind, I do think we can arrange that. In another time Lily, we can discuss how much he needs to be at the hospital for his basic needs.” A beeping interrupted his explanation; he reached for his pager reading it briefly. “Sorry I have to get this. But yes, it’s possible. Nice to meet you Jon, see you around Lily.” He turned on his heel, speed walking down the hall.
“Of course if you’re not comfortable with Sam leaving the hospital, we can figure something out.” Jon filled the empty silence.
“Are you kidding? He’d love to go. But I don’t want cause you any trouble or anything.”
“Don’t even worry about it. So four tickets? You, Sam, and your parents?” He offered, the mention of her parents made her stomach still twist.
“No actually, they won’t be coming. Three tickets will be fine if you can.” Lily shifted awkwardly.
“Boyfriend?” Jon couldn’t help but sound a little saddened at the idea; he didn’t know why he expected her to be single.
“No.” She nervously laughed. “Haven’t had one of those in a few years. A close friend of mine and Sam, she’s a nurse here actually.”
“Sounds good, does Sam know how to skate? I’d love to take him out on the ice.” Jonathan continued.
“He does but really Jonathan, don’t worry about it, the game will be way more than enough.” They started walking slowly together.
“You can call me Jon if you’d like. But I want too, he’s a cute and lovable kid who doesn’t deserve what he’s going through.” Jon’s slid his hands into his pockets.
“Okay Jon, well on behalf of Sam and myself, thank you. For everything. I haven’t seen him that happy since this all started.” She couldn’t stop the smile from appearing on her face.
“I’m glad I could be a part of it. Pat and I were talking after, he’s a pretty big fan, has he been to a game before?”
“My Dad used to take him to a few games before...” Lily stopped herself.
“Before he was diagnosed?” Jon tried to finish her sentence, his tone filled with sorrow and sympathy.
“No. My parents actually died in a car accident when Sam was 5, Sam wasn’t diagnosed till he was 7.”
“You’re kidding.” Jon replied, his face going white as he realized that wasn’t the best thing to say. “No, I mean, I’m so sorry.” He tried to correct himself, his cheeks now transitioning to a harsh red.
“No.” Lily laughed at his blunt response. “I wish I was. But I’m not. It’s just been me and Sam since I was 19.”
“That’s amazing of you, to take care of him, especially through all this.” He tilted slightly towards her as they wandered around the hospital.
“I don’t think I could do it without the strength of Sam.” She explained. “He’s a little piece of treasure.”
“I can’t wait to get him to a game.”
“He’s going to flip his lid he finds out.” They both smiled, picturing his reaction.
“So I think we’ll get him to a game next week as long as the Doc clears it.”
“Sounds amazing.” They stopped walking, finding themselves outside Sam’s room.
“I’ll give you my number just in case you have any questions or anything.” Jon offered her nervously. He felt a huge sense of relief when she agreed and handed her phone over to him. “I like the picture.” He grinned, admiring her background of Lily and Sam smiling for the pic she’d taken of them.
“Thanks.” She laughed; it was her favorite picture of them together. It was the first time she’d been able to take Sam out of the hospital since he had been admitted and they spent the day at the zoo, spending hours staring at the animals.
“Here you go.” Jon handed the phone back to her. “Don’t be scared to call or text.” He grinned, slowly stepping backwards. “It was nice talking to you, Lily.” He nodded.
“You too and good luck in your next game, Sam and I will probably watching.” She smiled.
“I’ll remember that.” Jon winked at her. “I’ll try and score.”
“Aren’t you paid to do that anyway?” Lily bugged.
“Damn, I didn’t know that’s how it worked.” Lily rolled her eyes at his response. “Bye Lily.”
“Bye Jon, see you around.”
