Chapter 1

~~~
Katherine
“A Coors please,” I hear a deep voice from the left. I can feel the guy watching me as the bartender grabs his beer, but I keep my head down and my eyes straight forward as I sip my vodka and club soda. I’m not in the mood to talk to anyone; hopefully the guy will notice the tension surrounding me and walk away. Of course I have no such luck.
“Hey.” I slide my eyes towards the guy, managing a small “hey” back to him.
“I’m Jordan.” Can’t he just leave me alone? After a pause, I respond.
“Nice to meet you, Jordan.” An awkward silence ensues, and I’m glad my long curls are creating a partial curtain around my profile. Somehow it made me feel less awkward.
“Aren’t you gonna tell me your name?” he prods. I sigh inwardly. How could I get rid of this guy?
“Give me three good reasons why I should and I’ll consider it.” Guys are lazy. I figure he would just give up when he realized I wasn’t some easy slut he could bring home for the night. But of course, he just sits there on his bar stool, and his defiant smirk is visible even as I watch behind my curtain of hair.
“Well for one, you know my name. Two, you can’t drink alone so if I’m going to be your drinking buddy I should at least know your name. And three...” Jordan pauses and takes a deep breath. “I’m not trying to pick you up, if that’s what you’re worried about.” Damn, it’s like the fucker read my mind. I glance at him again. He doesn’t look like a douche, and that smirk he’s still wearing is starting to turn me on. I know I’m going to regret it, but I cave.
Jordan
“I’m Katherine,” she announces quietly, pushing her hair back from her face and turning to me. Fuck, she's attractive. Her dark blonde hair compliments her barely-tanned skin and minimal makeup brings out the green in her eyes. She's not sultry hot like a supermodel, but she's definitely attractive. I grin, trying to hide my excitement at finally winning her over.
“Nice to meet you, Katherine.” She smiles back tentatively, and I can’t help but notice the weird look on her face. I can’t figure out what it is, until suddenly I realize – she knows who I am. Fuck.
I don’t see his entire face until I turn to tell him my name, and that’s when I realize I was talking to a Pittsburgh Penguin – Jordan motherfucking Staal, to be exact. He’s even more attractive in person than in pictures. His fluffy blonde hair, still bleached white from the sun, is a stark contrast to his baby blue eyes and tanned, toned forearms. Suddenly the bar feels like a sauna, and I’m getting more turned on by the second. It must have been obvious on my face that I knew who he was, because suddenly he ducked his head and gave me a boyish, self-conscious smile. He must be nervous. Why would he be nervous? He’s the smoking hot superstar, not me.
“So...” I need something to break up the awkward silence.
“So...I didn’t think there would be any Pens fans in here, this place is so out of the way,” he confesses.
“Well technically I’m a Hawks fan, but -”
“Sorry, you’re a what? Wow, this friendship has ended before it even started,” he jokes, and his grin reappears.
“Psh, your loss, buddy.” I start to slide off my bar stool.
“I kid, I kid!” he exclaims a little too worriedly.
“Well at least I know I’ve got your attention,” I tell him with a wink. “Anyway, where were we?”
“You’re a Hawks fan.”
“Oh. Right. Well anyway, technically I’m a Hawks fan, but I like most hockey teams. And even if I didn’t even know what hockey was, your face is all over this town so I would probably still know who you were.” He blinks at me.
“...I think that’s the most you’ve said since we started talking.” Suddenly I feel self-conscious, and attempt to direct the attention away from me.
“So, tell me about yourself.” He makes a thinking face and strokes his chin.
“Well...I play hockey for a living,” he deadpans.
“You’re an idiot.”
“So I’ve been told.” We both chuckle; this is going better than I thought it would.
“Seriously Jordan, tell me something I don’t know about you.” He sighs.
“Fine. But first let me buy us another round.” I sigh, mimicking him.
“Fine. Wait.” I check my phone and find that it’s already midnight.
“I have class in the morning, I should get home.” Jordan looks slightly dejected, but doesn’t argue.
“Okay. Well can I at least get your number?” I smirk at him and type my info into his phone.
“There, happy?”
“Incredibly.” He winks and I roll my eyes in return.
“Good bye Jordan.”
“Bye Katherine.” As I leave the small, practically empty bar, my phone rings and I answer without checking the caller ID.
“Hello?”
“Hi!”
“Really Jordan?”
“What? I couldn’t wait to talk to you again.”
“I just left.”
“...and I also wanted to make sure you had my number since you didn’t get it before you left.”
“How do you know I want your number?” I ask as I walk to my car.
“Trust me, you want it. Actually though, are you okay to drive? I could drive you home if you need me to.” I get in the car and stick the key in the ignition. He must be watching me through the window of the bar.
“Jordan I had less to drink than you did.”
“Touché. Okay well drive safely, and await my next call.”
“Whatever you say. Bye Jord.”
“Bye Katherine.” I see Jordan waving through the bar window. I wave back with a grin, pull out of the parking lot and head home.
