What Kind of Job
The Return
April's POV.
It's been boring around here since James started traveling again. It's a good sign though, he should get to play soon. He's had a few practices with the guys now and says he thinks he's ready to get back in goal. I want to see him play but I don't want him coming back to early.
James' POV.
Every year there is a "dads trip" which is a time when all the dads travel with us. My dad's here even though I'm just returning and probably won't play. I've been sitting with them for the first couple of games but I'll probably be serving as Gustavsson's back up soon. I'm expected to play in the next five games but the trip will be over by then.
We play Boston tonight, it's our last game of November, and the last home game before a two game road trip. Once the road trip is over so is the dads trip. We lost 6-3 against the Bruins, and we play them again in our next game. This is the time Ron would usually switch goalies but it's been confirmed Scrivens isn't coming for the trip.
April's POV.
James is officially back, he said he's probably just backing up but he should play soon. I can't wait to see him play. Sadly, they lost the last game which was also against the Bruins but it was in Toronto. James said he really wants to play in front of his dad but apparently it's very unlikely.
James' POV.
After practice, Ron announces the line up. All the dads are in the room with us to hear the line up.
"Good practice boys, we play the Bruins again tomorrow and need to have a better game." I remember how Ron always says things like this before announcing the line up which brings a smile to my face. My dad gives me an odd look than looks back to Ron. "Our defense pairings are, Phaneuf and Schenn, Franson and Liles, Gunnar and Gards. Offensive lines, Lupul, Bozie and Kessel, Dupuis, MacArthur and Frattin, Connolly, Kule and Crabb, our extras are Steckel and Grabo. Finally our Goalies Reimer, Guss."
It takes a bit to soak in. My name was first meaning I'm in net "What?" Is the next thing I say, I didn't mean to it just slipped out.
"Well, you look like you're ready to play to me. Besides, no offense to Guss but you're our best chance of beating these guy." Ron says to me.
I swallow hard. "Yes, I was just shocked. I won't make you regret your decision, thank you Ron."
He nods and walks out. I turn to face my teammates and they start cheering for me, rubbing my head and patting me on the back.
Once the team finishes mobbing me my dad hugs me. "Don't do anything stupid." is all he says when he grabs me.
"I won't, but I will make you proud!" I say hugging him back.
He stops hugging me but keeps his hands on my shoulders "I've always been proud of you James, and I always will be. You make me proud everyday!"
April's POV.
James called me the second he heard he was starting and I told Natalie right away. The games gonna start in an hour and we're ready to watch it. I've never seen him play but I've seen him practice.
Notes
