From Boston to Dallas
Tyler Seguin. The name flashed across my screen and I sighed, "What now?" I mumbled. "Hello?"
"Mariah? It's so good to hear your voice..." he started
I gritted my teeth. Good to hear my voice? After not talking to me all summer THIS is what he says to me? Let me give you a little background. My name is Mariah, but I guess you probably knew that. I'm a 23 year old living in Boston. Avid Red Sox and Bruins fan. I met Tyler Seguin at a local bar during the Stanley Cup victory parties. We hit it off immediately. We'd sort of formed a relationship. We'd practically been dating 3 1/2 years when it happened.
It was July 4th, nearly 6 months ago now. I was sitting pool side laughing at a funny story Cassidy Seguin was telling when Tyler excused himself to take a phone call. None of us thought anything of it, until Tyler came back. His smile had faded and he was holding his phone in a somewhat gaze. Jackie Seguin was the first to speak, "Tyler, what's wrong?" she asked
"I've been traded to Dallas." The five words no hockey girlfriend wants to hear. The five words no family member to a player wants to hear.
Things became a mess after that. Tyler had went to Canada for training and I had stayed home. He had begged me to go with him, but I chose to stay. During this whole time, he never once called or texted. Now don't start with that whole "Well you could've called or texted him." I TRIED. He never replied. I had assumed this was his way of saying it was over.
Fast forward to today. I hadn't heard from him since that night of the trade and he has the nerve to say he misses my voice?! "Mariah?" he said snapping me from my thoughts
"Tyler, why are you calling?" I asked flatly
"I guy can't call his girlfriend?"
"Girlfriend? Tyler, you haven't called or texted me in almost 6 months! You have ignored my messages and now you're calling me your girlfriend? Fuck off!"
"I've been going through a lot, Mariah." he snapped
"And you don't think I have? Tyler, I wanted to be there with you and be there for you."
"Then why did YOU refuse to come to Brampton with me? Why did YOU refuse to move to Dallas with ME?"
"Tyler, you can't just expect me to give up MY life and MY career for you!" I almost yelled. He wasn't being serious, was he?
"Well, to be honest, Mariah, yeah I did. You know how the NHL works. You know that trades are always a possibility, so why am I the bad guy for thinking that you would want to be with me?"
"We could've made long distance work, Ty! You were the one who left and ignored everything! I tried for 4 months to contact you."
"Long distance never works..."
"You weren't even willing to try. So don't call me and act like I'm your girlfriend, Tyler."
"But...I miss you and.."
"Just stop there, Tyler. I am tired of your excuses. I waited for you for 4 months. I'm done waiting." I sighed, "It's over, Tyler." I said hanging up the phone
