Circle of Fear

Chapter 1

Danny tried to control his irritation as he had to interview one more candidate, wondering how come none of the other women had panned out. I reckon that's one of the prices you pay for being a Flyer, he thought dryly.

The doorbell rang and he managed to compose himself, crossing himself and saying a silent prayer as he went to answer the door. "Excuse me, is this the Briere household?", asked the young woman on the other side.

"Oui, mademoiselle. Allez-vous ici pour le travail?", he asked, hoping to see her reaction.

"Oui monsieur. Je recommander pour la compaignie, vous Monsieur Briere?", she replied in flawless, accent-less French.

"Je regrettar, mademoiselle. I am Daniel Briere and I've been interviewing candidates all morning", he said apologetically.

"Je comprends, Mr. Briere. I am Laima Raudonas", she said as they shook hands and they led her inside.

"That is an unusual name", he remarked as he led her over to the couch in the living room.

"It's Lithuanian, my mother is Lithuanian and my father is Russian, it means Luck. And you are French, Mr. Briere?", she asked politely.

"French-Canadian actually, from Gatineau. Miss Raudonas, you do know that I play for the Flyers, correct? I have three sons and we go on a lot of road trips during the season, I need a nanny who stays here and lives with us. It's not an easy job, my boys can be quite a handful. Do you have a resume?", he asked.

Laima nodded as she took out a neatly folded piece of paper from her purse and handed it to him. Danny unfolded the paper and read it, nodding in approval as he stole a glance over at her. She has a great background and references, and she is very pretty, he mused. Laima was tall and slim, dressed conservatively in a calf-length navy blue skirt and a white blouse, her golden-blond hair gathered in a bun at the nape of her neck and her sky-blue eyes kindly. I think this is going to be interesting, he thought.

"It looks like you are the most qualified person I've seen today, Miss Raudonas. It's not going to be easy dealing with the boys, my oldest doesn't want a nanny around", said Danny.

"I understand, Mr. Briere. I have worked with teenagers before", she replied. "How did you learn to speak French, if I may ask?", he inquired.

"My sister and I have always been good at languages, in fact she has a Masters in Russian and works as a translator. My major was in French and I've been speaking it from when I was a child, my father had a lot of French co-workers. I also speak my parents' languages and Spanish", she chuckled.

Danny felt his heart skip a beat when she smiled, her full pink lips turned up at the edges and her blue eyes sparkling with amusement. "Oui, mademoiselle. All I speak is English and French. Miss Raudonas, I'm impressed by your resume and you're the best candidate I've seen so far. Do you want the job?", he asked.

Laima was momentarily startled but she quickly regained her composure, much to his respect. "Yes, Mr. Briere. But are you sure you don't want to interview anyone else?", she asked.

"I am sure, Miss Raudonas", he said.

"All right, but I have to go get my things", she said.

"I'll drive you then", he said. Danny led her outside and took out the keys for his truck, opening the door for her as she got in the driver's seat.

"Where do you live?", he asked.

"My building is just a few blocks away, but I have a few things I need to get. I need to get my clothes and my books and my guitar and my amp", she said.

"You play guitar?", he asked, intrigued.

"I have a black Paul Reed Smith and a black Taylor acoustic, my Kustom amp is a portable. I play mostly 70's stuff and Iron Maiden and the Finnish bands like HIM, Nightwish, that sort of thing", she explained.

Danny gave a low whistle and nodded in approval. "Some of the guys play guitar but not like that, I don't think I've ever met a lady who played guitar like that", he said.

Laima gave him a look, an amused smirk on her pink lips. "Mr. Briere, we metal chicks are more common than you think", she chuckled.

Danny laughed as he parked the truck in front of the building, quickly getting over to the passenger's side and helping her out. "My mother raised me to be a gentleman", he chuckled.

Laima just smiled as she led him up the stairs to the second floor, taking the keys from the pocket of her skirt. "I live by myself and the lease is almost up, I'll have to contact the landlord later", she said. Laima went into her room and began to pack her clothes into a duffel bag, Danny looking around the room.

"You can take those with you", he said, referring to the posters on the wall.

"I know, those are nylon", she replied as she zipped up the bag and carefully took down the posters. One of the was the Wizard from the classic Led Zeppelin poster of Stairway to Heaven, another of Iron Maiden's Eddie as the Sphinx from the Powerslave album cover, a HIM poster featuring Ville Valo bathed in blue light with angel wings, a Nightwish poster with the Century Child album cover, and a map of Middle Earth.

"Lovely posters, I really like the artwork", said Danny in wonder.

"Thank you, my sister and I are into the same stuff. And my guitars and the amps are in the cases over in the corner", she said. Danny nodded and watched as she carefully rolled up the posters and placed them in sturdy plastic tubes, picking up a guitar case with each hand.

"We'll come back for the amp", he said. They went back downstairs and Danny was careful when he placed the guitar cases in the back of the truck, going back inside to get the amp in its case. "I bet the boys are going to get a kick out of this", he chuckled.

"What are they like?", she asked as they got inside the truck. Danny turned on the engine and backed out of the space. "The boys can be a handful, but they're good boys. They'll have to get used to you first, but if you get on their good side, they'll love you, believe me", he said as they drove away.
