“It’s over, Jamie,” you told him. Jamie Benn was surprised, understandably. Both of you knew it was falling apart, but neither wanted to admit you thought it would ever end. You didn’t want it to, but there was nothing left to salvage. There was no communication, not over text, over calls, or in person.
“Wait,” he said, voice cracking. “Does it really have to end this way? Can’t we start all over, instead of going our separate ways and never speaking again?”
You were silent, unable to think of anything to say.
“I’m still going to love you,” he added softly. “That’s the one thing that won’t change.” You turned away, trying to hide the tears gathering in your eyes. He gently reached out to cup your chin, turning your face back to his. You didn’t resist.
“I’m never going to stop caring about you.” He looked you in the eyes, and you could see the pain in them. “You won’t stop caring about me, either; I can see it in your eyes.” Jamie looked away, whispering, “You always will, I know you will.”
You wanted to say something, but the words caught in your throat.
“I know I’m not perfect, but that won’t stop me from trying to keep this together, to keep us together. As long as I can feel you holding on, I won’t fall, even if you said I was wrong.” Jamie was nearly crying now, and you could see the toll this was taking on him emotionally. “I’ve always loved you.”
“Jamie,” you choked out, shuddering. “This- this can’t go on. I can’t handle you always gone. I know it’s part of your job, but that won’t stop me from missing you more than I should.” You sobbed. “You’ll find someone else…”
“No, no, you’ll always haunt my heart. Please, don’t leave,” he begged “I feel so empty without you; I’m not alive if I’m lonely.” He quieted, unable to form words. When he finally found them, he looked up, tears in his eyes. “Why… why did you do this? Was it something I said, or me, my personality?”
Now you couldn’t look at him. “No, it’s-it’s not you at all… It never was, it’s me. It’s all my fault.”
“Just one more chance,” Jamie pleaded. “I’m not perfect, but I’ll keep trying, just like I said I would do from the start.”
