One Shots
Jonathan Toews/Patrick Kane
You stood on the players’ bench, waiting. Your boss had sent you to interview a few the Blackhawks players for your first gig, and your camera man waited in another corner, setting up. While waiting, you glanced around the rink, taking a look here, reading something there. You watched the players for a little while, when you noticed two of the players by the red line boards. They were talking to each other, occasionally pointing something out on the ice, when the taller one looked up. You cracked a shy smile, and the two of them skated over.
“Hey, pretty lady,” the blonde one grinned, taking his helmet off. It was Patrick Kane, and so the other must have been Jonathan Toews. You took your hands out of your pockets, introducing yourself, and shaking hands with the captain and alternate. “I’m supposed to being interviewing a few of you guys for a short segment on NHL Network. “
“Not a problem,” Jonathan said, grinning. He called out a few names. “Sharpy, Saad, Keith, Seabs, Crow!” He gestured with his head for them to join him. While you waited for the named players to finish their drill and join you, you spoke with Toews and Kane for a little. After using their last names a few times after their first requests, Jonathan spoke up. “You know what? Just call me Tazer. This is Kaner.”
Kane elbowed Toews, grinning. “Already getting close and cozy with her, eh, Tazer?” Jonathan glared at him, shoving him a little. “Oh, tell me you weren’t thinking the same thing.”
“What thing?” Patrick flashed a mischievous smile, giving him a small punch on the shoulder.
“Oh, you know,” Tazer grinned, shoving him again. A small match ensued with the two, as they wrestled each other on the ice. Kane ripped Toews’s helmet off, giving him a noogie with his glove still on. You couldn’t help but laugh at the expression on the captains’ face. “Get off me!” Tazer yelled, flipping Kaner over, off of him, and pinning him down. Kane yelped, laughing and pushing Jonny off. They got up slowly once the rest of the players skated over. Both leaned on the boards, grinning and laughing at each other, while you stood, almost confused a little. Kane threw you a wink. You groaned and put your head in your hands.
“What thing are they talking about?” you asked Brandon Saad, who was taking a gulp of water . He swallowed and smiled a little. “Oh, it’s kind of an inside joke of a sort. They’re challenging each other on who’s gonna ask you out first.”
“I’m sorry, what?” But Saad had already gone back.
Toews turned back to you once he was finished talking to the others, explaining what you were going to be doing. “I think there’s a unanimous decision.”
“And what’s that?”
“We’ll do the interviews as long as I get to go on a date with you.” A cough sounded from the group. Jonny turned his head and grinned, then shifted back. “Well, Kaner too. Not both at once though. We wouldn’t want you to get too overwhelmed by our pure hockeyness.”
You laughed. “Looks like Captain Serious does have a sense of humor.”
