One Shots

Marcus Kruger

The first thing Jonathan told them was to stay away from you. When you wanted to know why, he said it was for your own good. “They’re all players, anyway. They’ll just break your heart.”

You didn’t care. When he told you after the first time to stay away, you went behind his back. So what if his teammates were off-limits? The knowledge that they were forbidden to you just made them more appealing.

After Shaw, he was disappointed. After Saad, angry. After Kane, though, he was downright outraged. “I shouldn’t have to go to practice every day worry about which one of my teammates is fucking my sister this time!” he’d screamed.

You had retaliated. “I’m a grown woman, Jonny! I shouldn’t have to be ‘protected' by my big brother! Why don't you just worry about your fucking game and I'll worry about my love life myself!”

He avoided you for days after that, but every time he saw you with any of the guys he gave you a disapproving glare. So what if you’d had a few flings? Those had meant nothing to either party, unless there was a third party involved (and it seemed your brother always was).

He didn’t approve of your ‘friendships’ anyways, air quotes whenever he said that word. “Goddamn it, can’t you see they’re just trying to get in your pants?”

But most of them really were just friendships, even though Jonny was too stubborn to see it. Most of the guys were just happy that there was a girl around they could talk hockey, chat, and play video games with.

They were still wary, as if every action was under scrutiny by their captain. Because you were Jonathan’s younger sister, they had to be careful, lest anything incurred his wrath. They all knew what would happen in that instance.

And so you decided to keep your lengthy relationship with Marcus a secret. You still had to be careful, especially in the social environment, where a minuscule gesture or a second-too-long glance could mean the end of everything if Jonny found out. He seemed to always have a way of discovering these secrets.

You kept contact to a minimum with Marcus anywhere you were not totally alone. It pained him, you knew, keeping it down for so long, though he knew you felt the same. Jonathan was still shadowing you, despite repeated warnings and verbal “fuck off!”s.

Finally, the chance came to tell Marcus how much pain this caused you. He’d been injured the previous game, right before a two-week long road trip. Though he was pissed about not being able to play, he appreciated the chance to spend time alone with you, unhindered by his captain’s efforts.

He stayed home that trip, and you couldn’t get enough of each other. Every second hiding your feelings in public spilled into those fourteen days, yet you couldn’t help but worry about your brother finding out.

"Hey, Marcus, have you ever… have you ever felt like maybe we shouldn’t be doing this?" you asked him one night, nervously. "Like, you know, all this sneaking around? We’ve been together seven months, somehow without him finding out…”

"It’s gonna be okay," he whispered, stroking your hair, holding you close. "Even if he does find out, that’s not going to stop me from trying my hardest. I’ll never stop loving you, even if he tears us apart."
