Tongue Tied

Alex was more than relieved her first night back home. She had missed Halifax, who wouldn't miss that place? The entire flight back, she was so worried about seeing Kathy and Graham. She was convinced they hated her. When Nathan and Alex walked into the airport, Kathy hugged Alex before she even looked at her son. It was obvious that neither MacKinnon had any resentment towards Alex.

The next day was the shower. Alex got ready and then woke Nathan so he could. He didn't take much time to get ready. She sat downstairs and watched TV. She heard Nathan coming down the stairs so she shut it off. She stood up and walked into the hall to slide on her shoes. Nathan felt winded when he saw her. She never failed to look amazing.

"You're gonna steal the show from Melissa in that." He sighed as he came towards her.

"I'm in jeans and a shirt." Alex rolled her eyes.

"And you look beautiful." He shrugged.

"Oh, shut up." She shook her head.

They drove to Melissa's house. When they pulled up, it was clear that most of the party had arrived. Nathan found somewhere to park around the corner. They walked hand in hand up to her house. Alex rang the doorbell before she walked in, Melissa spun around and cheered, her stomach protruding. Alex grinned and hugged her friend around her baby bump. Melissa hugged Nathan while Alex hugged Melissa’s boyfriend, Jake. Melissa turned and reached for Alex.

“Come upstairs with me. We need to catch up away from everyone.” Melissa instructed.

She waddled her way to the stairs with Alex following. Mel made Alex go ahead of her on the stairs so she wouldn’t have to wait for her. Alex hopped up them and watched her friend climb them. She laughed and Mel rolled her eyes. She finally got to the top and into her room she went. Alex sat on the bed and smiled as Mel folded some things. Her glow was evident.

“I can’t believe this, Mel. I am so happy for you.” Alex sighed watching her.

“It means so much that you and Nate could come out for this.” Melissa confessed. “It’s all so hectic and you’ve always kept me sane.”

Alex smiled. “I’m glad I’m here! You must be crazy happy though!”

Melissa’s shoulders slouched. “I, yeah, I’m,”

Alex watched her shoulders shake.“Mel,” Alex frowned.

Melissa turned and tears were rolling down her cheeks. She walked over and sat beside Alex, flopping into her lap. Alex rubbed her back as she cried. She didn’t understand. Wasn’t having a baby with someone you loved supposed to be an amazing feeling? Melissa sat up and wiped her face. She took a shaky breath.

“It’s ruined everything, Al. I was in school on a basketball scholarship that I’m now going to lose because I can’t play with this.” She pointed at her stomach. “Everything I’ve worked for is gone now because of this stupid fucking baby!”

Alex sat in shock. She had no idea what to say or how to deal with this. She just frowned at Melissa. The door slowly opened and Nathan stepped in. Alex let out a silent breath. Her hero. He saw the state Melissa was in and frowned before he closed the door and walked over. He sat on the opposite side of her, pulling her into a hug.

“What’s up, Mel?” He asked her.

She sat up and wiped her face. “This is ruining my life!” She cried and gestured to her stomach. “I never wanted to be a mom this young and now I don’t have a choice.”

“Mel, c’mon. This isn’t ruining your life, it’s creating a new one for you.” He explained, wrapping an arm around her. “Just think, in ten years when you’ve watched your baby grow and find things it loves as much as you love basketball, you’ll realize that it was all worth it. Everything happens for a reason.”

Melissa sighed and hugged him. “I don’t know why you’re good with words but you’re right. It’s probably just hormones.” She stood, wiping her face again. “Thank you, both of you.”

She left the room and Alex scooted over to Nathan. He pulled her into him holding her with both his arms. She let out the breath she was holding from the time Melissa lashed out to him. He rubbed her shoulder and kissed the top of her head. She felt his chest shake as he laughed.

“You looked absolutely terrified when I walked in.” He laughed again.“I didn’t know what to do!” She confessed. He smiled at her. “Do you want kids?”

“One day, when I’m ready and find the right girl.” He nodded.

“I don’t know if I want them,” She admitted. “And I don’t think any guy would be willing to deal with me for eighteen years, minimum.”

He shook his head. “When I said the right girl, I meant you.” He rolled his eyes.

Alex looked up at him. She grabbed his face and pressed her lips to his. He kissed her back with his hands resting on the small of her back. She pulled back slowly and pecked his lips again. She stood up and walked to the door. He followed, stopping her before she got to the stairs.

“You say you don’t want kids now, but as soon as Melissa pops or your sister has a kid, or someone close to you does and you become ‘Aunty Alex’, you’ll change your mind.” He told her.

She shrugged and walked to the stairs. “Maybe if you’re really persuading, I might as well.” She said before hopping down the stairs. She froze when she got to the bottom one and turned back to Nathan. “Nate,”

He knew the problem. He walked down them slowly and wrapped his arm around her when he reached her. “Just say hi and avoid them.”

In the living room, Bridgette, Leah, Marina, and Denise were sitting with Melissa. They all had wine and were laughing. Alex frowned. She didn’t know how to approach them without it being awkward. The front door opened and a swanky looking Mack Weegar walked into the house. His face lit up when he saw Nate and Alex. He waved as he walked over.

“You guys came all the way here for this? Wow, I haven’t see you in years, Al,”

She covered his mouth with her hand. “Please shut up. I do not need the girls to notice I’m here and want me to talk with them. I’m too awkward.”

Mack nodded. She uncovered his mouth and he hugged her. He lifted her from the ground, earning himself and eyeroll. He did the exact same to Nathan before he made his way over to people. Alex exhaled leaning into Nathan who wrapped his arms around her. It was gonna be a long night. Alex's night was not going as planned. Dana finally showed up and made herself noticed so the two were now with the girls. It was awkward seeing as they were the only ones that kept contact with each other out of the original six (no pun intended). Nathan was watching her with the boys.

"So, Macky, how long until Alex is looking like Mel?" Darcy asked, sipping from his glass.

Nathan tensed up. He looked over at Alex. She was smiling with the girls, holding Melissa stomach. Her mouth went into a perfect 'O' shape before she laughed. Melissa smiled at her. Nathan smiled. He could honestly see Alex being the mother of his children. He turned back to the guys. He shrugged at Darcy with a smirk. They all started to cheer and push him around. He knew he wanted it to happen, but he'd give it a lot more time. They were both way too young.

Alex looked over at them with furrowed brows. Nathan sipped his drink and winked at her. She rolled her eyes. He chuckled to himself and looked back to the guys. Jo was drunk and rambling on about Nathan and Alex's relationship. Nathan shook his head at his drunk best friend.

"You want to have kids with her, admit it." Jo flailed his arms.

"Al and I still have a long way to go before we get to kids." Nathan snorted.

Stefan scoffed. "Nah, you two are like that typical couple that get married right outta high school."

"Obviously they aren't or they would currently be married, Stefan." Zach shook his head.

"Fuck off! What I meant was that they're just typical. They're made for each other." Stefan explained.

Nathan shook his head while he laughed. "We're far from typical."
