The First One

Chappter 2

“What’s wrong?” Ben asked Rylee as soon as she was next to him.
“I think I need some fresh air. I’ll be back in a minute, okay?”
“Okay,” he nodded and returned to his conversation immediately. He hadn’t even realized that there were tears in her eyes. Why would he?
At the end of September it was already pretty cold. When Rylee breathed in the air, she felt a little calmer, but that still couldn’t stop the tears. Luckily, there was nobody on the balcony, so she didn’t have to talk to anyone or even explain why she was crying. She held on to the wall on the edge of the balcony and looked over the city. The hairs on her arms stood because it was so cold. She didn’t care. Despite the cold it was much nicer out here than it was inside.
She let the tears drop down onto her hands and took a deep breath. Yes, she’d expected to see Adam again one day, especially now that she lived in Boston, but she hadn’t thought that it would affect her this much.
She pulled a tissue out of her clutch and dabbed at her eyes, careful not to destroy her makeup too much. Why? Why couldn’t she have lied to Adam and told him that she was happy? She knew that she was far from being happy, but maybe someday that would happen. Ben Lowell was a good catch, but she didn’t love him. Adam had seen right through her. Seeing him had touched something that she’d buried deep inside her body. In a place where nobody should have been able to find it. One look at Adam, though, and it came out of this hiding place by itself.
“Stop it!” she scolded herself. She shouldn’t think about it, shouldn’t cry, yet here she was.
“Stop what?” someone next to her asked, making her snap erect and turn around. In front of her was a guy why was probably younger than her, but a lot taller. He had strawberry blond hair and a bright smile on his lips that vanished as soon as he saw her face. “Wait, are you crying?”
Rylee quickly ran a finger beneath each eye and shook her head at him. “I’m not crying.”
“Yes you are.” He took off his jacket and draped it over her shoulders. “It’s freezing cold out here.”
“I can’t take this. You must be cold as well.” As Rylee tried to take off the jacket to give it back to him, the young man put his hands on her shoulders.
“I’m fine. Really. I’m wearing a long sleeved shirt and your arms and shoulders are bare. It’s the least I can do.” There it was, his smile was back. “And you’re not crying anymore, so that’s a plus.”
That made her smile. She looked up at him. “Thank you…?” She looked at him questioningly, because she didn’t know his name. His face looked familiar, though.
“Dougie..”
“I’m Rylee.”
“Well, it’s nice to meet you, Rylee. And it’s especially nice to see you smile now.” Dougie put his hands in his pockets and looked over the city. “Beautiful, isn’t it?”
“Yes it is.” It felt good to stand out here with a stranger. A stranger who was really nice to her and had stopped her crying. She knew that she had to get back inside, though. Her head was throbbing from crying already and the air inside the room would only make it worse. She should probably go home and straight to bed.
“I better get back inside.”
“I’ll go with you.” Dougie escorted her back inside, where she handed his jacket back to him. “Well, it was a pleasure to meet you, Rylee.”
“The pleasure was all mine. Thank you for the jacket.”
“Anytime.” Dougie grinned at her while he put his jacket back on. He waved at her before he turned around and walked straight to where Adam and the other hockey players were standing.
“Oh damn,” Rylee mumbled feeling her headache getting worse. Now she knew why his face had seemed familiar. He was a hockey player for the Boston Bruins. Of course.
“Who was that guy?” Ben asked even before she could say a word to him.
“Dougie Hamilton, player for the Boston Bruins. He gave me his jacket, because it was cold outside and we talked a little.”
“Okay. That’s it?”
“Yes, that’s it,” Rylee said with a sigh. “Would you be disappointed if went home ahead of you? My head is killing me and I wouldn’t be good company anymore.”
“Did the cold air not help?” He held the back of his hand up against her cheek. “You do feel a bit hot. We don’t want you to get sick. Should I call the driver?”
“No, no, it’s fine. I’ll just call a taxi.”
“Are you sure?” He looked a tad worried.
“Yes, I’ll be fine.” Rylee stretched to kiss his cheek. “I’ll see you at home.”
She turned around and went to get her coat. She wrapped the scarf around her neck, put on the coat and called a taxi on the way down in the elevator. She was surer that she’d hide beneath the covers as soon as she was home. Well, she’d take off her dress and the shoes, slip on something more comfortable before, but then she’d dive under the covers and try to catch some sleep, get rid of the headache.

“What were you doing out there with Rylee?” Adam asked as soon as Dougie was with them. The two had become close over the past year. Dougie was still living with him, because there was enough room in Adam’s apartment. There was no need for Dougie to move out. Living together was comfortable for both of them.
“You know her?” Dougie shoved his hands back in his pockets and looked at Adam. He was about ready to head home. These kinds of charity events were not for him. He liked visiting children at hospitals a lot more. Or Cuts for a Cause. But going to an event to eat fancy food and donate money. Well, it was okay. The food was good, but he liked doing something himself a lot better. Dougie wasn’t the only one with this opinion. Most of the guys on the team felt that way.
“Yeah. So what happened?” Adam looked at his friend curiously.
“I found her outside crying. So I talked to her and gave her my jacket, because it was cold outside.”
“She was crying?” Adam looked concerned. Okay, tears had been in her eyes when she’d walked away from him, but he hadn’t thought that she’d actually start crying. She’d seemed so strong, so determined, and he could hardly have followed her.
“Yeah, and she told herself to stop it.”
“Oh boy…” Adam ran a hand through his hair.
“Okay, what did I miss?” Dougie looked first at Adam, then at the others around them. He hadn’t been gone that long, had he?”
“Rylee was Adam’s first love, now she’s engaged to mister millionaire over there and Adam wants her back. See, you didn’t miss that much.” Shawn Thornton tried to explain the situation to him.
“I guess I’ll get to hear the full story, when we head home?” Dougie asked, looking at Adam again.
“Yeah, sure.” Adam nodded in agreement. His thoughts were already with Rylee again, though. God, he hadn’t wanted to make her cry or anything, but she’d had to hear the words he’d said to her. He knew that she wasn’t happy. Suddenly Adam looked up. “I think we should just go now. We’ve been here long enough.”
“Sounds good to me,” Dougie agreed. He couldn’t wait to get home, and more importantly, hear Adam’s story. He wouldn’t let him off the hook. He wanted to know the whole story.
