The First One

Chapter 7

“You ready?” It was more than a week later and Dougie Hamilton asked Adam right before their first regular season game. They’d play against the New York Rangers, and everybody on the tea was pumped to start the season. The pre-season games had been really good for them. They’d won each game, and were now ready to play for points.
“Of course I’m ready.” Adam tapped stick against the younger one’s helmet right before he set foot on the ice at the Garden. Loud cheers arose from the audience when both teams started warming up.
While they were stretching, Adam saw that Gregory Campbell was looking up, a little distracted. He gave his teammate a little shove, so that he nearly lost his balance.
“What are you looking at, Soupy?”
“Hm?” Gregory turned around, a grin on his face. “I just saw that Abby made it. She wasn’t sure whether she’d be here in time.”
Adam followed Soupy’s gaze and saw Abby, but he also saw someone else. His jaw dropped, when Rylee sat down next to Abby. He couldn’t see what she was wearing, neither did he see much of her hair, but he’d recognize that face anywhere. The smile and the eyes.
“What the hell…?” he trailed off.
“What?” Gregory stood up again, stretched his arms in front of him, but keeping his eyes on Adam.
“What the hell is Rylee doing here?”
“Beats me.” Greg shrugged his shoulders before skating off.
Adam had to admit that knowing that Rylee was in the building, made him a little nervous. She hadn’t seen him play in person in years. But he was more worried about the reason for her attendance than the fact that he might do something stupid in front of her. He didn’t get distracted that easily anymore during games. He could usually turn his thoughts off and concentrate on nothing else but hockey.
“You look a little flustered,” Dougie remarked when he had the chance to talk to him.
“She’s here.”
“Rylee?” Dougie looked a little taken aback. He hadn’t expected to see her here at all. Adam had told him what had happened between them. “You haven’t talked since then, right?”
“No. I have no clue what she’s doing here, but she looks so prim again that it makes me angry. It’s not what she’s supposed to look like. That’s not her.” Adam had raised his voice a little while talking.
“How about you try to catch her after the game? She’s here with Abby after all. Meanwhile, you can concentrate your anger on the Rangers.”
That sounded like a good idea. Adam did what Dougie had told him and used his energy for the game. He played more physical than usual, assisted on a goal and the Bruins won 2-0 against the Rangers. The coach had asked him what was wrong in between periods, because he hadn’t seen him that angry in a long time. Adam had kept quiet and shrugged his shoulders.
After the game, he hurried up with showering and getting dressed. He headed out together with Gregory Campbell, telling Dougie he’d meet him at the car a little later. Dougie nodded with a grin on his lips. Gregory knew about Rylee as well. After meeting her at the bakery, Abby had told him what she knew, but had kept to herself what Rylee had said about her feelings.
To Adam’s disappointment Abby was standing there alone, one hand on her growing bump, a little smile on her lips. She was glowing, and Adam had never seen Gregory so happy. Rylee must have gone home already.
“She just left a few seconds ago. Hurry up and you’ll catch her. She’s on the way to her car.” Abby grinned at him.
“Thanks!” Adam exclaimed, placed a quick kiss on her cheek before he dashed off to the parking lot. If he didn’t talk to her now, he didn’t know when he’d get the chance again.
As soon as he saw her, he called out her name. She stopped for a few seconds, but didn’t turn around. Instead she kept walking towards her car, the heels of her shoes clicking against the ground. Adam let out a huff, picked up his pace and gripped her wrist as soon as he reached her.
“You know, you should at least turn around when someone calls your name. Especially when you know the voice,” he said a little gruffly, still holding on to her wrist.
Rylee’s eyes widened. She tugged her hand, but Adam didn’t let go. With a sigh she looked down, put a smile on her face and looked at him again, but didn’t get a word out, because he spoke first.
“Why were you here and more importantly, why were you running away from me?”
“I wasn’t running away…”
“Oh yeah? It sure looked like it.”
“Okay, I wasn’t very keen on talking to you.” She didn’t want to say that he made her feel things she shouldn’t feel as an engaged woman, but he probably knew that anyway. “And I was here, because as a future Lowell, I have to do certain things, and Ben asked me to take over his hockey duties, since I know a thing or two about the sport and like it.”
“A thing or two? You know a whole lot, Rylee.” Adam eased his grip around her wrist, but still held on to her. He put his thumb on her pulse point, realizing at once how fast her heart was beating. She wasn’t out of breath, so she was probably nervous. Carefully, he pulled her a little closer, so that she had to tip her head back, even in heels, to keep looking at him. “You made me so angry.”
“Why?” Confusion was showing on her face.
“Why? Because I looked up to see Abby and there you were. Here. Without saying a word. We haven’t talked since we had dinner together, and suddenly you turn up here and don’t say a word. And then you don’t even have the decency to stay and talk to me. No, you try to get away, probably hoping that I’d never know that you were here. Am I right?”
Rylee bit down on her bottom lip and looked down. Adam didn’t let her. He wanted her to look at him, so he cupped her cheek with his free hand and tilted her head back up.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t want to come, but apparently it’s my duty.” Rylee sighed. “I just wanted to see you, have time to look at you and sort my thoughts and feelings without you saying anything to me. I didn’t want to get influenced by anybody or anything.”
Adam realized that she was starting to tremble. First her fingers and her bottom lips, then her whole body.
“Oh man,” Adam mumbled before he pulled her into his arms. He held her close for a few moments, feeling her cling onto him. Now he felt guilty. He had been angry with her for coming to the game when she’d only wanted to see him and think about everything.
She didn’t cry, and slowly her shaking stopped. Adam looked down at her, tilted her head back a little to see her face. When he did this, he couldn’t resist. He sealed her lips with his. At first he was ready to draw back quickly again, but Rylee leaned more against him, gripped his upper arms and opened her lips beneath his. Surprise by her initiative, Adam held her tighter, but he knew that he had to put a stop to this.
He would have liked nothing more than to take her home, spend the night with her, and keep her in his bed, his apartment for a long time. But she was still engaged, and so Adam broke the kiss.
“I’m sorry, Rylee. I didn’t want to put pressure on you in any way. I just couldn’t resist your lips.”
“You never could. At least that’s what you said.” With a little smile on her lips, Rylee looked up at him. She drew her hands back and took a deep breath. She had gotten more than she’d come here for. A lot more, but she didn’t yet know whether it was good or not. One thing was for sure, though. It had been great to be kissed like that. Ben had never kissed her like Adam had.
“Hey, you’re smiling again.” That put a smile on Adam’s lips as well. “Next time you’re attending a game, give me a warning, okay?”
“Okay.” Rylee nodded, fumbling in her coat pocket for the car keys.
“Okay. Dougie is waiting.” Adam leaned forward to peck her cheek before he headed off towards his own car. It was really hard for him to leave her there, but it was the right thing to do.
