Ch. 3 Drive to Pittsburgh
“Hey Lizbid what's up?”
Why the hell was she so chipper?“Kaela what the heck just happened?! It seems like everyone in Boston suddenly hates you!” I pretty much screamed.
“Calm down woman! I just caught Tyler cheating on me” – shocker I thought – “and he decided to let the world think that I was the one that cheated on him! And now everyone is sending me hate!” she shouted back. I could tell she was on the verge of tears. “I have no idea what to do, but I don’t think I can keep living in Boston.”
“Hey, why don’t you just move in with me? We always talked about living together after high school and now we can finally do it!” I replied thoughtfully. It seemed like a good idea, we had always wanted to live together.
“Can I really?!” she said excitedly. I brushed my fingers against the small heart necklace. Kaela had a matching one. We got them in high school as a friendship sorta thing. Even out of college we still talked daily.
“Heck ya!” I replied. “It’s Friday, well technically Saturday now. If you want you can pack up and be here by Sunday!” I replied with zest. This was gonna be great. I peered around my apartment; a mess as usual. Eh, she would have to get over it if I didn’t clean it by Monday. Not likely.
“Oh my gosh Lizbid! Thank you so much! I will start packing later today and try to be there by Sunday!” she said happily. I smiled, bid her goodbye, and hung up. I was lazily browsing the internet, probably should go to bed. With her coming in town and my apartment a mess, I would probably need some sleep. Not that I would be waking up early or anything. I never did. Shutting my laptop, I plugged it in and snuggled under my covers.
**************************************************
My phone rang, nice and loud. I groaned and rolled over to retrieve it. The screen blinded me, and I squinted hard before I could make out what it said.
Kaela – Just got up! Headed for you today bae!
I rolled my eyes and mentally cursed her. 6 a.m. Why. She knows I love sleep. Hell, she loves it just as much as I do.
Me – Woman! It’s too early here for you to be waking me up! But let me know when you’re an hour out of town, we can go get dinner somewhere.
Kaela – Will do captain!
I groaned again at her early-morning happiness. I hoped she wasn’t going to be like this the whole time she was here. I could not deal with that. Sighing, I turned my phone to silent after setting the automatic reply text to “I’m asleep. If it’s that urgent call my house phone.” It was usually what I set it too. Turning the brightness down, I plugged it in and rolled back over, falling asleep almost instantly.
KAELA'S POV
After getting dressed in yoga pants and a sweatshirt, I loaded what I could into my car and left the rest with the neighbor to ship to me. After making sure he had the right address, I hopped into my car and started the drive to Pittsburgh...
I looked down at the sweatshirt I was wearing, (http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=124194899). God I just can't escape hockey, can I? I thought. It turns out that I had chosen the only sweatshirt I had from college, which just so happened to be for hockey. What was funny though was the only reason I had originally bought the sweatshirt was to try to catch the star hockey player's attention in calculous class. Turns out that certain hockey player became the captain of the Chicago Blackhawks. Anyway, turing my thoughts back to road, I looked at my GPS wondering how long the drive would take.
"9 and a half hours?!" I said to myself. "Dear lord this is going to take forever! And why does it have it driving past the New York Ranger's arena?". I decided even though it looked a bit off to trust the GPS, because from past experience I cannot navigate without it. Turning on the radio, Sweet child of man by Guns'n'Roses came on. God I love this song, I thought.
Classic rock had always been one of my favorites. After driving for seemed like forever, and listening to classic rock, I finally saw the New York Ranger's arena. "Wow, this thing is huge." I muttered as my car approached it. Right as I reached it my car started stalling. What the shit! I just got this thing checked!, I thought. Pulling into the arena's parking lot I put the car in park and popped the trunk. Luckily my dad used to work as a mechanic so I knew a little bit about how to fix cars, or at least enough to patch them up enough to get them to a shop. Suddenly it dawned me, Really a hockey arena. Dear lord karma what the heck. Was one run in with hockey players not enough for you!, I mentally screamed. "Karma's a bitch." I muttered as I stepped out of the car to get my tools out of the trunk.
Getting the tools, I walked around to the front of the car and lifted and secured the hood up. Nothing seemed wrong so I checked the oil. Nope, I have enough. I thought. Maybe the cooling fluid. Nope, not that either, I thought. I looked down at my hands and noticed that I had oil on them. Trying to figure out what to do, I gave up and just wiped it on my jacket. Not like I gave a shit about this jacket anyway, I thought. Moving on to check the radiator, I heard what sounded a bus pull up but ignored it because I was a little bit busy at the moment. It wasn't until I heard several footsteps right behind me that I snapped out of my car repairing bubble.
Turning around I came face to face with Patrick Sharp, Patrick Kane, and the man who I had originally bought this sweatshirt for. I internally sighed, Ok karma, when I muttered you were a bitch, I didn't think you were on period. But really? Dear god why did it have to be them of all people in this big, wide, world! When I snapped out of my thoughts, I noticed that they were all looking at me like they expected my to say something. "I sorry, what did you say?" I asked. Jon stepped forward "We were wondering what you are doing here." Kane interrupted him, "And your name, because I'm pretty sure its not sexy" Kane said with a cocky smirk. Sharp was just silently standing there. I gave Kane a look that said 'what the hell', but continued. "I'm Kaela and nice try, but no. I try to avoid hockey players. And I don't date blonds." I said giving him a smirk. "The only reason I'm here is because my car stalled out, then died. So I started checking all the fluids, but I'm starting to think either the battery died, or a gas line broke." I said as I turned back to my car to start working on it again. God I hope they leave me alone. I thought.
Sadly they did not because in a matter of seconds both Kane and Jon were hovering over my shoulders looking at what I was doing. "Can I help you." I said bluntly. Both of them looked taken aback for a second, as if saying 'how dare I not worship the ground they walk on.'. But they quickly recovered while Sharp just stayed back smirking at the whole exchange. "We were just wondering what was wrong with it and if we could help." Jon said. By this time, I had figured out that the battery was dead. I turned to Jon, "Well a jump start would be nice because it turns out that my battery died." Finally Sharp spoke up "Alright guys back off, she clearly doesn't want either of you in her pants." he turned to me "If you want me to, I can go get an employees car to jump start yours." I thought about it. I didn't really want a hockey player's help, but I didn't have a lot options. "Alright," I said. As he turned go I blurted out, "And thanks." He turned back, "No problem, and boys don't bother her." With those as his final words he walked into the building.
As soon as he was gone, neither Jon or Kane listened to his instructions. "So where are you from?" Kane asked. "Boston." I said. An awkward silence filled that air while they waited for more detail that I wan't planning on giving. But I didn't care, I didn't want to be here anyway. After some more awkward small talk of them trying to get me to talk about my life and me giving them one word answers, Sharp finally came back with an employee and their car. Thank god! I can finally get out of here!, I thought. Getting out of the car Sharp walked up to us, "I hope they didn't bother you too much." he said to me. "No, not too much." I replied. As we talked the employee set up the jumper cables on his car, as he turned towards my car I stopped him. "No, I can hook it up to my car, its a bit tricky since the places to put the clamps are hidden." I said. Deciding that the boys had floundered a bit too much with me, Sharp spoke up, "You seem to know a lot about cars." After clamping on the cables I turned to him, "Ya, I've always loved sports cars, and my dad was a mechanic for a bit, so I can hold my own with cars." I said. Wow, that was the first genuine answer I've given to them. I thought. After jumping my car, which involved revving the engine, not that I minded, I unhooked the cables.
"Thank you so much!", I said to the employee who just simple nodded, got in his car, and drove away. That was a bit rude, I thought. I turned to Sharp, "Thank you for helping me.". Turning to the other two, "Bye guys." was all I said. As I turned to get into my car, Jon stopped me. "Hey, sorry to stop you but I just noticed that you were wearing a shirt that had the college I went to on it and," He said examining it closer, "hockey? But you said that you didn't like getting involved with hockey players. Why would you have a hockey sweatshirt from my college?" he said. I looked up at him, "First off, its not 'your college' I went there too. And as for the avoiding hockey players, that was a recent goal." He turned to look at Kane, then back to me, "Did you ever see me play?" he asked with a cocky smile. I scoffed and rolled my eyes "Ya, I did. But I was a year under you, and I think that you were in my math class too, but I always sat at the front."
He looked shocked for a second, "Wait, YOU were that nerdy girl that always got a's?!" Kane butted in, "But your hot! How could you have been a nerd?". I gave them a look like, 'did you seriously just say that to me?', "Yes, I am that 'nerdy' girl, and I was quite proud of my grades in that class. Oh, and Kane, keep those thoughts to yourself." I said as I started to get into my car. Once in, I breathed a breath of relief. I am finally out of here! I thought. That was, until Jon decided to knock on my window. "What does he want now." I said as I rolled it down. He looked at my kinda nervous, "Hey, I'm sorry for calling you a nerd, but I agree with Pat when he said you were hot. So can I have your number?" he said. "Look, like I said earlier, I'm done with hockey players. So no you cannot have my number, go find someone else's pants to get into." I said. Right after I was finished with my mini rant, I rolled up the window and sped off.
