Jonathan Toews Imagine

Rooftop Encounter

You set the tray of refreshments on the table and take a seat under your favorite umbrella. Jonny would be there soon. In the meantime you quietly took in the sunset, the orange glow haloing the skyline.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?” Jonathan says as he slips into the seat opposite you, grabbing a drink. He nods his head to the sky.
“Oh my God, Jonny you scared me,” you say, placing a hand on your chest. He smirks ruefully and you roll your eyes at him. “I thought you weren’t supposed to be here for another—“ you glance at your watch “—twenty minutes, at least? I thought you were with Lindsey?”
“Yeah, I just left a little early. She was busy with some stuff, I didn’t want to be in the way.” He shrugs and looks at the glass of lemonade in his hands.
“So, how are things with you guys? I haven’t seen the two of you in forever.”
“Oh, y’know, great,” he says slowly. You notice that he hasn’t stopped staring at his lemonade and the beginnings of a frown punctuate his face.
After a few moments you cheerily ask “So when are you going to ask her to marry you?” You tap your glass against his knee. They’d been dating for a few years now, but you only meant it jokingly. You knew you’d get a nervous laugh from him, maybe a blush, anything to get him to stop staring blankly at his lemonade…but…nothing. His hands flex and his mouth twitches and then you finally realize. “You aren’t going to, are you?”
“[Y/N]….” He groans quietly.
And that’s answer enough for you.
Your stomach does a little flip, but you ignore it. “Then why are you still with her? Why would you stay with someone for that long if you had no intentions of marrying them?” He’s looking at you now, but you can’t stop. “You could be going out and travelling the world, or starting a business, or writing a book, or maybe even finding the girl of your dreams! Someone who takes your breath away! Someone who you’d actually want to spend the rest of your life with!”
Deep down, you knew this was going to happen. So many strong emotions were unraveling all at once, ones that you had pushed down and tried to conceal. The anger for all the times she had hurt him or not been there for him and left you to pick up the pieces. The anguish for all the times he went back and forgave her. The loneliness. The sadness. The hurt.
But most of all, the love. Jonathan was your best friend and at some point that friendship had blossomed into something so much more, for you at least. You never stopped caring for him, you never stopped wanting to make him smile, to make him happy.
“[Y/N]?” The sound of your name pulls you out of your thoughts and you look up, locking eyes with him. “I actually broke up with her before I came here….well…yeah. When I was away in Vancouver I realized a few things.”
“Oh...” You meant it as a question, but the sudden seriousness in his look stopped you. He stood up as if to leave and you quickly stood as well, but he didn’t go anywhere. You looked up at him, wondering if he was going to say something else, but before you knew it his lips were softly pressing against yours.
It was a quick kiss, but it filled your body with so much electricity it took all your will power not to force a few more kisses. You blushed profusely and his look of seriousness melted into a playful smirk, his big, dark eyes aglow. And in that look you knew.
“I’ll see you later, [Y/N]”
You watched as he walked away, completely filled with joy. You sat back down to finish your lemonade, the sun finally winking out just below the horizon.

Notes

So this is my first fanfic. I think it could use some work, but for a first it's pretty decent. I'm also just really nit-picky. Well, I hope you enjoyed it! Feel free to leave questions or comments!
