You and I

Chapter 15

“He might be the most recognizable hockey player in the world. This man is a two-time Olympic Gold medal winner and most recently Stanley Cup Champion. Please give a warm welcome to Sidney Crosby…” I tug on my cuffs one last time after the introduction is finished. I walk out and easily go through the motions of waving to the audience and then shaking hands with Jimmy Fallon.

Once I’m settled he jumps right in. “Man, it’s so nice to have you here. We’re all huge fans.”

I smile at his enthusiasm. “Thanks for having me.”

“So, it’s been what a week?” I nod and he continues. “A week since the Penguins won the Cup, have you gotten used to it yet?”

“God, no. I think all of us are still riding on that high. It still doesn’t seem real.”

“What goes through your mind in those last moments? Because honestly, I thought Chicago had it won.”

Even a week later I still get a hot flash thinking about how close Chicago got to winning. And so I shift a little, suddenly uncomfortable. “It’s just one of those moments that you learn to just accept. I’m not going to question it.”

The audience chuckles slightly and Jimmy agrees. “Is there any difference this time around? I mean it’s your second cup. Is it different this time?”

“Uh, not really. It still feels absolutely amazing.”

“Part of the fun, I would imagine about being a professional athlete is the women,” I incline my head ever so slightly. “But you already kind of won that prize too.”

“I doubt that Brooklyn would like that comparison, but yeah to say the least.”

“And she was at the game of course?”

“Yeah she was. She’s great in so many ways, you know. She has this insane schedule but I swear she is at just about every game.”

“She’s such a sweetheart, we love her here. Absolutely one of the nicest people in the world.”

I nod realizing that this is the most I’ve ever talked about my private life in an interview. Surprisingly, it doesn’t bother me. “It’s strange at first, seeing someone who is in movies on a daily basis, but she never acts like a movie star.”

“Yeah definitely. And I’m sure your family was excited.”

“My sister has never been more excited. I swear the only reason she calls me is to talk to Brooklyn.”

The audience laughs at that. “And she’s pretty attractive too.”

“The most beautiful woman in the world.

“Basically, you’re a lucky guy.”

“Without a doubt.”

I’m back in Pittsburgh a few days later. Since Brooklyn is in L.A. finally catching up on work my place is empty. The idea is for me to take this week and plan out my summer training schedule, but it’s just about the last thing I want to do. Tentatively, I’m supposed to split time between Cole Harbor, L.A. and Colorado, but it all seems like too much. What I would like to do is surprise Brooklyn with a vacation somewhere, just the two of us, no commitments, no handlers, nothing. In the middle of my browsing on travel sites, my phone rings. “Hello?”

“So, I’m the most beautiful woman in the world huh?”

I can’t help but smile when she answers the phone. “You finally watched it.”

“Well some of us still have to work this summer,” I know she is sticking her tongue out. “Of course I watched it. You looked great and were just, as usual great.”

“How’s L.A.?”

“Boring. I miss you and everyone. Is anyone still in town?”

“A few people, but everyone will be back soon enough.”

“Good. Also, I’m looking at my calendar what day will you have the cup?”

I’m shocked that she’s even thinking about that, as well as unreasonably excited. “Sidney?”

“Oh yeah, sorry. It’s my birthday.” An idea occurs to me. “I’m going to be in Nova Scotia for all of August, do you think you can come stay with me?”

She doesn’t answer immediately and I’m concerned I’ve overstepped. “I would love to. There might be a few days I have to be gone, but besides that I’m yours.”

“I like the sound of that.”

“Me too.” We both let that declaration set in.

Then I hear a beeping and Brooklyn groans. “What was that?”

“My damn relator again.”

“Thanks for reminding me, I actually have to talk to mine too,” I make a mental note to call him. “What does he want?”

“He wants to know whether or not I’m renewing my lease in Pittsburgh.”

Her admission hangs there for a second and I jump on an impulse. “Don’t.”

“What?”

“Don’t renew the lease. You have a place in Pittsburgh.”

Silence. “Sidney Patrick Crosby, are you asking me to move in with you? Again.”

I chuckle at the last bit a little. “I’m not very good at this am I?”

“It’s fine, Sid. I would love…”

I cut her off, refusing to fuck this up, again. “Brooklyn Rae Donahue, will you move in with me?”

“Of course.”

****** I’m in LAX waiting for Sidney. According to the arrival board his flight just landed and I stop myself from standing up and pacing. The whole goal of this exercise is to remain as inconspicuous as possible. I have a plan tshirt and a baseball cap on, so hopefully I can go unnoticed. About twenty feet away from me I see the airport security watching the exits. And then I see him coming through the concourse. He looks good, as always. It takes him a moment to find me but when he does I can see the grin on his face, all the way from here.

When he finally comes over to me I comfortably fall into his arms. “Hey, babe.” We kiss quickly before he wraps an arm around my shoulders. “Thanks for meeting me.”

“Of course, do you need any help with your bags?”

He shrugs, “I’m fine, most of my stuff is getting shipped anyways.”

We almost make it to the exit before cameras and paparazzi find us. And for once I really don’t care. Sidney steps in front of me and tries to block as many cameras as possible. Once we drive away I can’t believe he’s actually here. Sure, Sidney has been to L.A. before, but he’s never come here to specifically visit me. And I’m a little nervous.

“Home sweet home,” I open the door to my home in the hills. I’ve upgraded in the past year, it’s bigger and more private than ever. Anxiously I wait to see what Sidney thinks about it. He turns surveying the foyer. His silence grates on my nerves. “Before you say anything, let me show you something!”

I drag him through most of the superfluous rooms until we end up in the basement. “Take a look.” He still doesn’t say anything as he explores this special room. I ramble on. “I was told that it’s all state of the art. The machines, the equipment, everything up to professional standards. And if you go through here a little farther I actually…well just follow me.”

He follows wordlessly as I take him into the next, considerably cooler room. “Obviously, this won’t take the place of everything you have to do at the actual rink, but I was told that for warmups and stuff it’s good. And um, for shooting practice or just skating…”

I trail off and finally look at Sidney, who is just staring at me. “Shit, it’s dumb isn’t it?”

He shakes his head. “It’s unbelievable.” And he closes the distance in between us. “You built me an ice rink?”

I shrug. “I have way more money than I know what to do with.”

He laughs. “Clearly.” With a smile he brushes a piece of hair away from my face. Then I feel his lips slowly move over mine. It’s gentle, sweet and I lose myself in it. My body goes loose under his arms and I melt into his kisses.

When he finally pulls away I rest my cheek against his chest. “So you like it?”

“It’s perfect, the house just seems like you.”

We spend the next few days together, rarely leaving the house, until finally Sidney hast to go workout. He isn’t gone for that long and I keep myself busy with various projects I have in the work during the day. At night though I’m sure to show Sidney everything that L.A. has to offer. We go to parties, clubs, restaurants and it’s great seeing Sidney a part of my world.

One Saturday afternoon we decide to waste the day by watching a movie. Snuggled on the couch in the middle of the Titanic, my phone goes off. “Don’t answer it,” Sidney groans nuzzling my neck.

I roll my eyes. “Sidney, I have to.” He releases me with a quick kiss. “Hello?”

“Brooklyn,” It’s my mother on the other line and she sounds breathless. “It’s your father.”
