A Good Time to Tell

*Abby’s POV*

“Patrick!” I yelled as I threw up in the toilet for the 50th time today. Patrick came in and held my hair back while I puked. “Should we maybe go the hospital?” he asked, getting nervous. “Nah, it’s just a stomach bug honey, nothing too serious.” He let go of my hair as I stood up. “Can you grab me a clean shirt?” I asked him, picking up my toothbrush and putting toothpaste on it. Patrick left the bathroom as I brushed my teeth. Damn, what’s happening to me? I thought, feeling a little bit nauseas. I stared displeasingly at myself for a minute, while scrubbing the puke out of my mouth. My hair was a mess and it looked like I haven’t slept in days. Our wedding was coming up very quickly, and I wasn’t prepared at all. I was either too busy being sick, or too busy being exhausted. I leaned down to spit the toothpaste in the sink and when I came back up my head hit the door of the medicine cabinet knocking everything onto the ground. “Shit” I said aloud as I bent down to pick everything up. Pill bottles, band aids, birth control pills, extra toothpaste, you name it. The last thing I picked up was a pregnancy test. I laughed to myself. Arianna gave this to me a couple years ago when we still lived together.

-Flashback-

“Hey Abby, I have a surprise for you” Arianna said to me as she came out of her room. I sighed, “Ar, if it has anything to do with me and Patrick save it, because I’ve heard enough.” Arianna wouldn’t stop teasing me about how she and Jon could here Patrick and me in his apartment the other night. It was nonstop. Jon has been giving me awkward looks and he couldn’t hold a conversation, while Arianna on the other hand thought it was the funniest thing. “Oh come on Ab, it’s funny! Take a joke!” I turned around to see her prancing towards me, while holding something behind her back. “You know you’re a loser right?” I said laughing as she sat next to me. Arianna ignored me as she went on to say “Well Ab, Jon and I want to make sure that you and Patrick are always ready for the unexpected so…” She didn’t finish her sentence as she pulled a little box from behind her back. Immediately, she started cracking up. “A PREGNANCY TEST?! REALLY?!” I yelled as I too laughed with her. Arianna squirmed on the couch laughing as I put the box in the bathroom. “You’re the best Ar” I said sarcastically, sitting back down next to her on the couch. And for the rest of the day, I sat there pretending to be mad at her.

-End Flashback-

Why do I still have this? I thought. I examined the box. I had never used one of these before. Being the curious girl I am, I shut the bathroom door and took it out. I heard a knock on the bathroom door. The knock scared as I jumped like I was doing something wrong. “I have your shirt out here” Patrick said. “Umm…ok, one sec.” I said. I looked down at the stick and I started to have a mini panic attack. I opened the door. Patrick stood there with one of my shirts in his hand. “I feel dizzy” I said as I fell into his arms. That was the last thing I could remember before falling asleep.
“Abby, Wake up!” I heard Patrick say. I opened my eyes, and Patrick was sitting next to me on the couch dabbing a wet cloth on my head. “You alright?” he asked me as I sat up. “No Patrick, I know the reason why I have been so sick” I said as best as I could. My throat was dry as hell, and that didn’t help what I was going to tell him next. “Abby…you’re pregnant!” he yelled giving me a hug. I sat there confused for a second. “How’d you know?” I asked him. “I went back in the bathroom and saw the stick lying on the ground.” I manage to smile. “Patrick, it hasn’t even hit me yet, but we are having a baby!” I kissed him on the cheek as I gave him a giant hug. “I know!” he yelled. “I’m gonna be a dad! I have to call Jon and Shawzy right now!” He went to get his phone. “Patrick wait!” He turned around to face me. “Let’s not tell anyone till after the wedding. It wouldn’t look good if everyone knew I was pregnant on my wedding day.” He came back over to sit next to me. I put my legs on his lap. “You’re right. Now you’re gonna have to start eating healthier and exercise and…” I cut him off. “Patrick, I know” I said smirking as I climbed on top of him and kissed him. We spent the rest of the night lying on the couch talking about our new addition to our soon to be family.

-One Week Later-

“Segs!” Arianna and I both yelled as both ran into his arms. I saw Jon and Patrick roll their eyes at each other. We had just arrived at Logan Airport. I stepped back into Pat’s arms as we all started to get our luggage. Pat and I would be staying at Arianna and Jon’s apartment the next few days. The wedding was Saturday, but we still had tons of stuff to do. Later on, I had to meet my family to discuss wedding rehearsals and all that fun stuff. I just wanted to relax. Patrick had been taking extra care of me lately, and it was kinda funny. He had never been so passionate about anything other than hockey.

We got in Segs’ car, and headed for the garden. “Thanks for picking us up Segs” Arianna said from the way back seat. I sat up front next to Segs. “The boys made me, so uhh…I wouldn’t thank me” I heard Arianna laugh as I started to zone out. There was so much on my mind, I could not think straight. I had to tell Arianna about the baby. The only time I was going to relax in the next week was in 10 minutes and the bachelorette party. Arianna and I were going to watch the guys practice while Jon and Pat were going to go plan the bachelor party. I figured I would tell her then. It was the only time to. I wasn’t even going to tell any of my family till after the wedding, but Arianna needed to know. I also needed advice from her too.

“Bye babe” I said kissing Pat on the cheek as him and Jon took a cab to who knows where. I turned to face Arianna, “Ready?” I asked as we started to walk into the garden. “They’re here!” Tyler yelled into the locker room. Arianna and I gave all of them hugs as they started to head for the ice. “It’s great to be here” Arianna said. We started to follow them so we could sit behind the bench. “I know, I really miss coming here” Arianna and I both sighed as we took our seats.
The first half hour of practice we sat there in silence watching the boys do drills and everything else. “Ab, you nervous? Usually you don’t stop talking when we come here.” I looked over at Arianna and rubbed my eyes. This is probably a good time to tell her, I thought. “I am nervous Ar, I’m nervous as hell. But that’s not the reason I’m not talking.” She looked at me with a little confusion on her face. “Don’t tell me you’re still sick. Abby, you should really go to the doctor.” I laughed, “Arianna, I already went to the doctors and I am not sick and I haven’t been sick.” I think Arianna started to pick up the hints, because she started to smile. “Oh Ab! Don’t tell me…” I cut her off. “Yes, I am pregnant” Her jaw dropped as she started to ask me a million questions. “Arianna! Be quiet!” I whispered. “No one knows yet, and no one is gonna know till after the wedding” She started to come back to earth and calmed down a bit. “Oh my god! You are gonna have a kid! Patrick is gonna be a dad!” I laughed, “Yah, I’m shocked by that too.” For the rest of practice I answered every question Arianna asked, whether I knew it or not. The boys started skating off the ice and coming towards us. “Jeez Arianna, why you jumpin’ around so much?” Marchy asked the rather excited Arianna. Arianna looked at me, then Marchy. “Oh nothing, you’ll find out soon enough” She winked at him as he shook his head and went back to the locker room with the rest of them. “Thank Ar” I said, getting up to leave the garden.

“So I was thinking for the bachelorette party, we rent a club, invite a few girls, and sit back and relax” I said to Arianna as we were going to drive back to her apartment. “Oooh, there should expensive champagne and exotic male dancers and everything” Arianna said, giggling. “Exotic male dancers? You mean strippers?” I asked, laughing at the term Arianna had used. She nodded her head smiling while I added “Hell yah there’s gonna be exotic male dancers! And the most expensive champagne you will ever drink!” “Don’t drink too much it might affect your pregnancy” Arianna said. I looked over at her and rolled my eyes. “Not you too, Pat won’t stop bugging me about eating healthy. And don’t worry I’m gonna drink responsibly.” We arrived at her and Jon’s apartment shortly after.

“Shouldn’t you guys be planning your night of fun?” I asked Jon and Pat as they sat on the couch watching TV. Jon looked up at me and said “Unlike you women, all we have to do is plan a place to get drunk and that’s it.” I laughed as I took a seat on Pat’s lap. “Jon you better watch it, because you have a wife and if I find out that you were letting some girl dance all over you then I will beat you” Arianna said as she took a seat on Jon’s lap and kissed him on the cheek. “Ok mom” he said, kissing her back. “So what are you ladies planning?” Pat asked me. “Well I was thinking that me and a few of the girls rent a club and have a little party there” Pat rolled his eyes at me. “Little party? Honey I don’t want you getting drunk and shit…it could hurt-“ I finished his sentence. “The baby. I know Pat, Arianna gave me the whole talk already. “She knows?” Patrick asked me with a rather serious look on his face. “Woah, what’s going on here?” Jon asked looking at Arianna, Pat, and I for an answer. I sighed as I got off of Pat’s lap and stood up. “Jon, I’m pregnant” Arianna got off of him as he got up to give me a hug. “That’s great Abby!” He kissed me on the cheek while practically squeezing me to death. “Good job Pat” he said to Pat as he let go of me. Patrick laughed and we all sat there talking about baby names for the rest of the afternoon.

-Bachelorette Party-

“I’m so happy you guys all came!” I said to everyone as they walked into the club. A few of the wives and girlfriends walked in along with my two sisters. “You’re lucky over 18” I said to Hannah as she was the last one in the door. “Enjoy your last night being free” Abby, Sharpie’s wife said. I laughed a little. “Let me tell you, I definitely will” I said as I took a big gulp of my champagne.

Most of the night, was spent dancing and drinking. There weren’t too many of us, but there were enough of us to eat all the food and drink all the alcohol. “Hey where’s the strippers!” Louise yelled to me over the loud music. “Oh they’re coming” I said, winking to her. “Good, because it’s getting kinda boring dancing with just women” “You whore” I said, jokingly as I turned to see 4 muscular men wearing nothing but small pieces of fabric walk out from behind the stage. “Oh my fucking god!” I heard Arianna say. “There ya go ladies, here’s the real show!” I said.
As the men walked around dancing and stripping the rest of the clothes they were wearing, I couldn’t contain my laugh. Why was I doing this? I thought. I had never done something this pointless before. I looked over at Arianna who had her face in her hands as the men made their way to her. “Have fun!” I yelled over the now blaring music. “Abby, I’m married!” She yelled back, laughing at the same time. “Oh and you think Jon isn’t doing this right now?” I asked her. “I hope Jon isn’t letting half naked men dance on him” I rolled my eyes, “Ar, you know what I meant.” The guys made their way to everyone eventually before ending the little show. Wasn’t that just fun, I thought as I sipped my wine.

“Did you have fun tonight?” I asked Patrick as I climbed into bed next to him. He was reading the newspaper and watching ESPN. “Yes, I had a lot of fun” I ignored his reply and said “Look at us Patrick, we’re already practicing the old married couple.” He ignored me as he went on reading the newspaper that he never used to read. I sighed and turned to face the other way. Tomorrow was the day. Tomorrow was the day that I became Mrs. Kane. Tomorrow was the day my life as Abby Healey was over. Tomorrow was the day my new life began. I was nervous as hell. Everything and everyone was ready but me. I hadn’t prepared much at all, and definitely not looking forward to making up the vows as I went along. I wondered if Patrick was nervous. He definitely didn’t seem it. He acted like he had done this a million times before while I was a nervous wreck. “Well that’s change that” Patrick said to me out of the clear blue. “Change what?” I asked him. “Change the fact we are becoming an old married couple” I smiled and turned around to face him. “I’m fine with that” I said, taking off his shirt, and pulling the blankets over our heads.
