That Must Have Taken Some Balls

Abby’s POV*

“Arianna! Hurry up!” I yelled as she was getting her purse from her bedroom. Arianna and I had been in an awkward kind of phase lately. Ever since that little walk in on her and Jon having sex, I couldn’t look at her the same. “Ready!” I heard her say, as we walked out the door. “It’s good to have a little girl time now aint it.” I said as we walked down the stairs to Patrick’s car. “It sure is.” Arianna replied. “Wow Abby, I am surprise he let you borrow his car.” “Yah, well all ya have to do is have sex with him, and you can get him to do anything.” I said jokingly. “Ahh I will definitely look into that” Arianna said. I punched her lightly in the arm. “You better stay away from my man!” We both chuckled as I drove to find a good parking spot near the restaurant.

The waiter sat us down at an outside table. “So Ar, anything new?” I said as I had just ordered a coke. “Actually, nothing new, but I feel like a lot of old stuff has come up.” I turned my chair to face her more. I kind of already knew what she was talking about, but I needed to hear every detail. As Arianna told her story, I felt like she was reading a passage out of a really sad story. “I’m sorry” I said as I patted her back. “It’s ok let’s not look on the negative side. I have great news by the way” she said, her voice changed from sadness to happiness in an instant. I looked down as she put her hand down on the table. On her hand was a beautiful ring. “Arianna, that’s great!” I shrieked as I went in to give her a hug. “Yah it is, and I am so happy that I am going to be marrying a man like Jon, but that’s what makes things even more difficult for Adam and I.” “Hey Ar, I know you and Adam had a past, but no one can win in this situation. I know I may sound a little cruel, but Adam has to eventually get over it, and he will. Adam will probably find another girl as great as you, and feel the same way you feel with Jon.” Arianna looked up with those sad eyes she had when we had first arrived in Boston. “Yah, but Abby, I don’t think I want Adam to get over it.” At that moment, I realized Arianna wasn’t messing around. She had it bad. Adam and her had fallen in love, and now Jon and her were getting married. She knew that what she said kind of made it uncomfortable for me. And she was right, usually I would give her really good advice at this moment, but instead, I had nothing to say. She quickly changed the subject. “So why did ya get the whole clan together, and go out to dinner last night?” she said as I played with my ring under the table. “This is why” I said. I put my hand on the spot where Arianna just had hers. “I proposed” I said proudly. Arianna covered her mouth with her hand. “Wow that must have taken some balls.” She said giggling. “It sure as hell did, but the thing that helped me relax was that Pat’s such an idiot. He didn’t even know what was going on till I put the ring on his finger.” We laughed as I told her my reaction. “Don’t worry, I stood there speechless too!” Arianna said.

“Thanks for taking me out to lunch Ab” “No problemo Ar.” I said as we walked back into our car. “It feels strange to be getting married. I never knew it would feel like this” Arianna said. “Same here, I feel like I am in captivity now. I don’t know if I like it or not. But hey, I am getting married to the most gorgeous man on the planet, so I can’t complain.” I said back to her. We joked about whose fiancé was hotter as we were almost back to the apartment. “I have an idea!” I yelled all of a sudden. Arianna looked at me while I continued to speak. “Since none of our friends know that we are getting married we should host a party!” Arianna paused for a moment and said “Great idea. It can be at me and Jon’s place, and we can invite the Blackhawks players, some Bruins players…” “I love it! I can’t wait.” I said as Arianna listed everyone we could invite. “By the way, have you told Adam yet about the engagement?” I looked over at Arianna in the passenger seat. The car went silent. Bad move, I thought to myself. She didn’t answer me. But by just not talking, she gave me the answer. Abby, why do you have to screw things up? She is your best friend. Say something that will make her feel better! My mind went blank like it did at the restaurant. I had never been in a situation like this before and have ZERO advice. I did not want to make something stupid up, so she would be happy at first, and have it backfire later on. I felt helpless. Like I was watching a person slowly drown, and could do anything about it. Ugh Arianna, why did this have to happen?
