Audrey smiled and excused herself. She smiled until she was out of sight and ran upstairs to the bathroom.

Nick had brought her to his house so she could meet his family. Both his parents were there. She felt uncomfortable. She was never comfortable around parents. She also got the luxury of meeting his siblings. All of them. All four of them. His three brothers and his sister. Rebecca was nice, she looked about as enthused to be there as Audrey was.

Pete was nice. He looked a lot like James. Pete wasn’t as sarcastic as the other three. Mike and James seemed to always be arguing or bagging on Nick. Audrey was between Nick and Pete. Pete would give her a smile now and then. She was across from James. She felt like he was watching her every move.

That’s why she excused herself.

James made her uncomfortable.

Maybe he had resentment towards her due to who her father was. Maybe he was trying to figure out how to ask about his old friends, G and Sid. She didn’t know, but she didn’t want to be watched any longer. She sent out a text to the girls, asking if they could meet her at her house in ten. They all agreed. She decided she was hiding for long enough and opened the bathroom door.

She jumped when she saw a figure. “Holy fuck, you scared me.” She sighed.

“I needed to catch you before Nick took you home.” James explained.

“Why?” She furrowed her brows.

“Look, if you’re just fucking with Nick, get out now.” James stated. Audrey’s jaw dropped. “If you actually like the kid and want him for the long haul, then prove it. I don’t need to see another girl pushing my brother around.”

She rolled her eyes before she nodded her head once. She came downstairs to Nick waiting at the door on his phone. Audrey walked over to his parents, hugging them both as she thanked them. She hugged Rebecca who gave her an apologetic look. She hugged Pete, who demanded she came by again soon. Mike agreed and gave her a tight hug.

“Where’s James?” Deborah frowned.

“He said goodbye when I was upstairs.” Audrey lied.

“Guess we can head out then.” Nick smiled, wrapping an arm around her.

Nick dropped Audrey off at home. She gave him a kiss and thanked him. He said he’d see her soon. She nodded, climbing out of his car. She didn’t know how true that was. She’d been thinking about what James had said.

Was she in it for the long haul? She didn’t think so. She knew the only reason she even bothered with Nick was because Sam wasn’t interested in her. If Sam showed up at her door stop, pleading for her to give him a chance, she knew she would drop Nick in a second.

She froze when she got to her front steps. Standing there was the last person she expected, but the one person she was hoping for.

Sam.

He was in her favourite sweater. She smiled a bit before he turned. She felt tense. He smiled, walking towards her. She gave him a small smile.

“I came to talk. To actually talk, and figure this out.” He explained.

She nodded. “Okay, but the girls are here so we can’t go inside and talk.”

“Wherever you want.” Sam put his hands up in defense.

Audrey walked into the backyard. He followed a respectable distance away. She stopped under the awning, staring down. Sam watched her. She was still upset, and very uncomfortable. He took a deep breath, tucking his hands into his jean pockets. Audrey looked up a little bit.

“You know what you told me when you came over last night?” He asked.

She nodded with a laugh. “You mean when I confessed my feelings and you played dumb?”

“Yeah.” He took a deep breath again. “I did some thinking and I think it’s mutual.”

“You like me?” She asked, crossing her arms. He nodded a bit. She shook her head. “This isn’t fair.”

“What?”

“You know I’ve moved on, Sam.” She hissed. “It isn’t fair that you think you can just come in and try to sweep me off my feet.”

“It isn’t fair that you went guy to guy trying to make me jealous.” He snapped.

“There was no one before Nick, and you know that.” She argued.

“The whole Jamie stunt?”

She rolled her eyes. “As if anything would’ve happened there!”

“What about Nathan?” Sam crossed his arms.

“What about Nathan? He liked me! I wanted nothing to do with him!” She yelled.

“Didn’t seem like that.” He shrugged.

She shook her head. “Whatever, Sam. Just go home and leave me alone.” She exhaled, walking past him.

“Why can’t you just admit that you felt something towards Nathan?” Sam called after her.

“Because I didn’t! I never did! It’s been you since the fucking day I met you!” She screamed. “Why is it so hard for you to understand?”

“You never acted like it and then suddenly when I’m out with another girl, you’re hurt.” He told her.

“I would take every chance possible to talk to you, I did everything for you, I would go out of my way to do shit for you. Anything to do with you, I was all for. Why was it that hard to notice?” She questioned.

Sam just shook his head and walked off. Audrey watched him in shock. She followed behind him. He didn’t slow down, even when she called his name. She ran up and stepped in front of him. He just avoided looking at her. She grabbed his face, trying to turn his face towards him. He fought her grasp.

“Sam, look at me.” She demanded. He didn’t. “Look!” He turned his head so he was face to face with her. “Did you mean what you said? Do you really like me?”

He looked down at her. “I don’t know anymore.” He spat.

Her hands fell from his face. “Really?” She laughed.

“Yup.”

She shook her head. “Fuck you.” She said through gritted teeth. “Get the fuck away from me and leave me the fuck alone. I’m done.”

Sam watched as Audrey walked up front. He listened for her front door to slam before he walked out. He looked at her door and sighed. He fucked up. Again.
