Kaylynn opened her front door and a small smile spreading across her face. Sam Bennett was standing on her front porch, looking cute as always. His cheeks were slightly flushed, his eyes on the ground, flowers in his hand. It was something you’d see in a movie. She stepped onto the porch, closing the door behind her. Sam looked up. His breath hitched. Her blue eyes locked on his and he felt like his knees were about to buckle. She just kept her smile on her face, dimples full blown.

“Are those for me?” She spoke, her smile never fading.

“Huh?” Sam jumped. She gestured to the flowers with her eyes. “Oh, yeah. Yeah, they are. Sorry.” He stumbled, handing them to her.

She giggled. “It’s okay. They’re beautiful.”

“Just like you.” He mumbled.

“Sam,” She cooed, rubbing his arm.

“I drove all the way out here just to ask you on a date, and I’m pretty nervous about it.” He admitted.

“You could’ve just asked over the phone.” She rolled her eyes.

“It’s not as genuine as face to face.” He argued. “But, Kaylynn, I would love it if you would drive back with me and attend our open skate, practice, thing.”

“What exactly would I be agreeing to?” She challenged.

“Skating around with your hand in mine while the team mocks me before we get annoyed and I buy you a hot chocolate and we have a heart to heart in the stands, away from everyone else that’ll be there.” He explained.

She smiled again. “I’d love to come.”

“Great. How long do you need to get ready?”

She shrugged. “I just need to fix my make up and bundle up.”

“Do you have skates?” He asked. She nodded. “Then just bundle up. Your make up is fine. You look fine.” She rolled her eyes. “Don’t roll those at me.”

She shook her head with a smile, walking inside. Sam followed behind. He stood by the door while she walked into the kitchen. She put her flowers into a vase. She inhaled them before smiling. He was too sweet. She found her skates and came back into the living room. Sam was smiling at her. She narrowed his eyes at him.

“What?” She glared.

“You’re just so cute and I can’t believe you said yes.” He stated.

She felt her cheeks flush. “Shut up.”

Kaylynn wrapped a scarf around her neck, slid on some mittens, placed a beanie on her head, and then slid into her coat. She walked over to Sam and gestured to her zipper. He zipped it up to her nose and placed a kiss on her forehead. She turned red and buried her face in his chest. He just smiled.

They drove and talked the entire time. They would be a bit late for the event, but neither cared. They laughed the entire drive. They sang, and bickered, and cracked jokes. It was a perfect first date. Kaylynn almost felt sad when they pulled up to the arena. She had enough fun driving, she didn’t want that to end.

Sam turned off the car. He looked at her with a smile. Her frown instantly flipped when she locked eyes with him. He climbed out, grabbed their skates from the back seat, and walked over to her door. He opened the door, helped her out, then closed it. He took her hand and led her into the arena.

It was a charity event that Dustin had set up for the team. The players and volunteers would be helping out to get money for a foundation. It was an open thing. Everyone was welcome, with the entry fee of a donation to the foundation. Sam walked up to the table. Josh, Michael, and Dani all turned to them. Danielle waved to Kaylynn.

“This is new.” She sang.

Kaylynn rested her head on Sam’s shoulder. He nodded at Josh. “Write me down for twenty and her too.” He instructed, pointing at the donation sheet.

“Big man, big bucks.” Josh teased as he wrote it down.

Danielle’s hand extended. “Forty bucks please.”

Sam placed the skates on the table, pulled out his wallet, and grabbed two twenties. Kaylynn grabbed his hand, reaching into her purse. He shook his head, handing the money to Danielle. Kaylynn glared at him as he grabbed their skates. He gave her a toothy grin before he kissed her forehead again. They moved down the table to Michael who pinned their ribbons onto them.

“Enjoy your night, love birds.” He chirped.

“Says you.” Josh mumbled, glaring at Michael and Danielle.

Kaylynn whacked his chest. “I could’ve paid, asshole.” She hissed.

“Kay, I invited you on a date. My treat.” He explained.

“But it was a donation!” She whined.

“Don’t worry. You can get me next time.” He winked.

He took her to the change room, telling her to sit in his stall. She made him take a picture of her sitting there. He smiled wider than she did while he took it. She posted it on instagram while Sam tied her skates for her. He tugged, gaining her attention. His eyes shot up as a worried expression spread across his face.

“Are they too tight? I c,”

“They’re fine.” She smiled, standing up. “Ready?”

“If you are.” He took her hand.

Kaylynn was not a skater. She grew up where it was warmer, and skating wasn’t much of a thing. People had tried to teach her, but it was no use. Sam held her hands, skating backwards as he guided her. She eventually got the hang of it. Sam skated beside her, still holding her hand. He would hold onto her waist from behind when the turned the corners.

Some of the guys were skating around. They would skate by, making kissing noises and taunting them. Kaylynn would just hide her face in Sam’s shoulder as they skated. He just smiled. He didn’t care what his lame teammates had to say.

When they had enough of skating, Sam lead Kaylynn back to the change rooms. He took off her skates for her with a smile. He didn’t mind doing it. He wouldn’t mind doing anything for her.

They walked out to the lobby. Sam smiled and nodded, waving and chatting with some people. These were the people he had played hockey in front of all his life. He walked up to the counter. Curtis, Aaron, and Malcolm were working in the booth. Aaron cocked a brow at Kaylynn who rolled her eyes.

“What do you want?” Sam asked Kaylynn, looking down at her.

“I would love a hot chocolate.” She exhaled.

“Two hot chocolates, please.” Sam said to his three teammates.

“You know, I don’t get why you aren’t helping us.” Malcolm spoke, leaning onto the counter resting on his elbows.

“Because I helped set everything up and I brought all the stock here.” He explained, handing money to Curtis.

Aaron placed the two drinks on the counter. “Enjoy your date. I’m sure I’ll hear all about it from Candice.” He smirked at Kaylynn.

“Goodbye, Aaron.” She glared, turning away from him.

The two found an empty area in the stands. They sat beside each other, close enough to feel their warmth, but far enough so they weren’t touching. Kaylynn sipped on her hot chocolate, not needing to say anything. Sam watched everyone skating around. Kaylynn watched him. He looked over slowly. She smiled as his cheeks turned pink. She slid right up to him. His arm came around her.

“Did you have fun tonight?” She asked, looking up at him.

He looked down at her with furrowed brows. “Of course I did. Didn’t you?” He frowned.

“Oh god, no. I had a great time. I was just making sure you did.” She laughed.

“My next game is at your school.” He nudged her. She cocked a brow at him. “I think it’d be pretty sweet seeing you in my jersey.”

She smiled. “I’ll see what I can do.”
