This Means War
Chapter 7 - Definition of normal please?
Nadia’s P.O.V.
Ow, my head… And my back. And my stomach. And my hair. I opened my eyes. That hurt. Moving my body seemed to need a superhuman strength I didn’t have. Talking of super human strength, how was I gonna get rid of Tommy’s arm around my waist? I was definitely locked in this position. As if he read my mind, he turned on his back, arms and legs spread. I rubbed my eyes. Where were the painkillers, again? Damn it, brain, why won’t you work? Ah, yeah. Probably because of the hangover. I got up and went to the bathroom to look for those holy pills. It was only when I turned the lights on that I realized I was still naked. Some would say it was a hell of a night that I had with Tommy but the real hell here was gonna be the challenge of getting through the day. Swallowing two pills, I noted to myself to never get drunk on wine anymore, as well as black beer and Jägermeister. Just to think about it, I felt like I was about to throw up. I tried to sit on the edge of the bath to not fall. I was becoming nauseous and dizzy. Ugh, I had to take a break from alcohol… I stood up, feeling my heart pounding hard and echoing in my head, and went to the kitchen. I hoped Tommy still had some Gatorade…
“Aww yiss” I whispered, finding a bottle at the very back of the fridge.
I swallowed almost half of the bottle and let out one of the most disgusting burps ever heard on Earth. I giggled and let myself fall on the couch. Eww, I was sticky as heck from too much sweating. I sat up and looked around the room. Oh, there was my phone. I checked my messages. Holy fuck, I had a shit load of unread messages.
“Damn…” I whined, trying to clear my vision to see the names of who they were from.
I took a closer look and gasped. Jonathan AND Patrick kept texting me last night while I was being an alcoholic slut. I facepalmed myself right at the moment when Tommy was getting up.
“Ow, damn it” I grunted, slowly removing my hand from my face.
“Not used to wine ever since we know each other?” he giggled, perfectly fine.
I turned my head towards him.
“I’m sorry but fuck your European drinker origins!” I growled.
He laughed.
“So… What’s the matter?” he asked, sitting next to me and checking my phone.
“They both texted me” I exhaled.
“That’s actually amazing! I thought they would forget about you quite soon with their busy hockey lives”
“I hoped it was gonna happen…” I exhaled.
“Seriously?” he replied, completely in shock.
“It would have made things easier! I can’t decide between them and it’s driving me crazy”
“Easier, you say? I don’t think so…”
“Yes, it would have been easier! I like them both though they are very different so one of them rejecting me would have cleared the track for the other and ta-da!”
“Nadia, sweetie, that’s not how it works!” he told me, patting my shoulder.
I exhaled deeply. What the heck was I supposed to do?! He pulled me closer to him.
“Close your eyes and breathe deeply” he whispered. “You need a hug”
He squeezed me. I closed my eyes and started to relax a bit. I was a distraction for them as much as they were for me. Or even more. I had to stay away from them for a little while.
“You know what?” I proudly told him, lifting my head from his shoulder. “I’ll keep my distances a bit”
“That’s a good idea! You were starting to sound like the crazy fan that’s never been near from boys before”
“Ha. Ha. Ha” I sarcastically let out.
I stood up to go make some breakfast. By breakfast, I meant a toast with peanut butter on it. Tommy spread himself on the couch, arms lying on top of the seat with his back on the corner. He put a leg on the rest of the couch and threw his head back, eyes closed. After putting a slice of bread in the toaster, I stared at him. He always looked so peaceful in every situation. Nothing could stress nor scare him. He was just this super-hot gay bodybuilder working for his dad; and it was enough to satisfy him. He emitted so much self-confidence, it was almost blinding. I guess I would have been like that… if only I had an easier life… A smoky smell took me out of my train of thoughts.
“Oh shit!” I exclaimed, pulling out my now black slice of bread. “Can’t even cook a simple fucking toast” I hissed before angrily throwing it in the trash can.
“Then can you walk?” Tommy asked me, eyes still closed.
“Very funny, little rich sexy ass…”
He laughed. I couldn’t help and laughed too. At this moment, I realized life was starting to be good to me. I had amazing hangover moments with Tommy, I was in a new city and two all-star hockey players were after me. I smiled.
“Come on, baby” he said, standing up. “Let’s get you some fresh air and a sandwich”
“And clothes” I added, pointing at my naked self.
He giggled and we went in our own rooms to get dressed. He always had the best ideas to make me feel better!
Jonathan’s P.O.V.
Waiting for the cue to get on the plane, I checked my phone again. No news from Nadia. I was starting to worry. Patrick was checking my phone from above my shoulder.
“You mind?” I told him.
“She didn’t answer you?” he asked.
I looked him straight in the eye.
“Why does it matter so much to you?” I hissed.
“Well… I see that she counts a lot for you so I was just asking”
He seemed sincere, which surprised me. I still hit her name on my screen and wrote her another text.
“Hey :) I’m sorry if I bother you… Just wanted to tell you that the plane is about to take off so we’re leaving for LA! We’ll try our best to open the season the right way. Hope you’ll like it ;) Have a nice day and see you soon xoxo”
I read it several times on my way to my seat then finally hit the send button. I let myself fall in my seat, soon followed by Pat next to me.
“Can I give you some advice?” he told me.
“I don’t need any information about how to do the kama sutra thing”
I heard a few players giggle behind us.
“Good one” he said, slightly giggling. “So, do you?”
“Can’t hurt, I guess” I exhaled.
I had to admit that I was a bit lost and desperate in this situation.
“Leave her a bit of space. Close enough for her to know that you are there but far enough for her to breathe and have her own life”
I almost gasped. If I had been standing, I would sure have fallen. Where the hell was this mature wisdom hidden all this time?
Patrick’s P.O.V.
“Dude, don’t make that face!” I giggled. “Maybe she’s not answering you because she wants that space I’m talking about”
“Maybe you’re right”
I nodded and looked straight in front of me. I wondered where this fatherly advice came from but it sure did the effect I was looking for. He was gonna leave her some stretch for me to fit in and build my nest. As I was expecting, a few minutes after the plane had taken off, Jon fell asleep as always. I took out my phone, decided to text Nadia. The only problem was that I had no idea what to tell her. I put my phone away and chatted with Crawford and Sharp. Later on, we got interrupted by some weird snoring coming from the seat next to me. I turned around to see Jon’s head tilted on the wall, mouth slightly open and drooling. I knew what I had to do. I first took a picture then opened Snapchat. I quickly added Nadia then took a selfie with Jon in the background. I giggled while writing a caption then sent it. I couldn’t wait for her answer. I suddenly realized how Jon was feeling. He must have sent her some cute quotes while I sent her something funny waiting to know if she laughed, if she was annoyed or only she had seen it. I decided to put my phone away for real and started chatting again with the guys. It was gonna be a long flight.
Nadia’s P.O.V.
Tommy and I were sitting on a bench in Humboldt Park, eating some freaking delicious paninis.
“Wipe your face, sweetie! You look a baby on his first birthday”
I laughed and grabbed the napkin he was handing me. I wiped my face then felt my phone vibrating twice. Gosh, not again! I pulled it out and went directly to the messages. As I expected, I had a text from Jonathan. Tommy read it above my shoulder.
“He’s so cute” he said. “I would love a man to tell me such words”
“It’ll happen to you, don’t worry!” I said, patting his thigh.
“Hey, wait” he said, as I was putting my phone away. “You have another notification”
I took it out and checked. He was right, I had received a snap.
“Patrick Kane has Snapchat?!” he whispered.
“I know, right!” I said as I pressed on his name to see the picture. “Mother of God!” I exclaimed before laughing out loud.
“I’m bringing sexy back” Tommy read the caption, while I was trying to catch my breath.
Jonathan looked like a total zombie behind Pat making one of his usual sexy faces. Gosh it felt good to laugh that much though my stomach hurt so badly! As I was wiping the tears off of my face, Tommy’s phone started to ring.
“Shit, it’s my dad! Gotta take this. I’ll be right back!” he said as he was standing up and walking away.
Tommy’s P.O.V.
“Hello?”
“Tommy, it’s your dad. Can you come in Wednesday?”
“You need me for a sale?” I asked.
“I need you to take note of the customer’s demands. He wants many modifications”
“What vehicle are we talking about?” I asked. Please don’t tell me it’s a SUV!
“Same as yours, except that it will be a coupe”
“The car itself in the new is pretty expensive… Did you tell him?”
“The customer has millions in his bank account. Is it enough for whatever he may want?” he sarcastically told me.
“When do you want me there?” I quickly replied, thinking of the commission I was gonna obtain for that.
“Wednesday at noon. You will dine with the specialized mechanics to mind them for the project. The customer is gone on a business trip and should be back during that day but he doesn’t know exactly when. He said he’d call me”
“Good. See you Wednesday” I added, hanging up.
Nadia’s P.O.V.
I saw Tommy heading back with a huge smile on his face.
“Now what?” I asked him.
“Gonna have to work for daddy this week. A huge tuning project”
“Nice!” I smiled, thinking about what we could do with the money he’ll get.
“Let’s go home and get ready to watch the game” he suggested, standing up.
“Yup!” I said, jumping up to join him.
…
Second period. The Hawks were up 2-1 against LA. Jonathan still hadn’t scored but Pat assisted both goals. It was a little boring. The game was pretty slow. No fighting nor illegal cross checking; only the minimum. I yawned and stretched, soon followed by Tommy doing the same.
“Mamma mia!” he mumbled at the end of his arm stretching. “This game is boring as hell”
“You’re right, my friend” I muttered before taking a sip from my glass of water.
We both sighed as the bell rang the end of the period. Damn, was it gonna be THAT long every time I wanted to encourage them?! I loved hockey but there was nothing special happening. I rubbed my eyes, trying to stay awake until next period.
…
Tommy woke me up at the end of the game. I fell asleep on his lap in the meanwhile. Gosh, watching a late hockey game with a hangover wasn’t easy!
“What’s going on?” I asked, trying to read the score on the big screen.
“Nothing happened but they still won 2-1. The only funny thing was that Quick was a little mad and broke his stick before leaving the rink”
“Why would he do that?” I yawned, remembering he used to be some kinda calm goalie.
“It must be Pat’s fault. When the bell rang he was passing behind the net and bent over to tell him something”
“God, please tell me he isn’t the Yo-Mama-jokes type!”
Tommy bursted out laughing, almost knocking me out with his knee.
“We better get to sleep” I said, trying to stand up. “I can barely keep my eyes open”
“Night” he simply said, leaving me to go straight to his room.
I turned off the TV and went to my room too. Damn my bed felt so comfortable! It was a real blessing. I just had to close my eyes that I fell asleep.
Jonathan’s P.O.V. (the next day)
I was sitting in the plane with a huge ass head ache. Last night’s disaster was still on my mind and kept me from sleeping for a few hours.
“Jeez, I can’t stand that face anymore!” Pat said, sitting next to me.
“Then why don’t you just chop my head off” I growled silently.
He sat quietly under my demon look. He didn’t have to add anything to my already bad mood.
“I know you haven’t scored or assisted last night but, damn, that’s not my fault! Stop being mean like that, you’re scaring the whole team!”
I shook my head and looked away. As a reflex (established during the last 24 hours) I checked my phone. Still no notifications.
“So that’s why you’re mad!” Pat exclaimed from above my shoulder.
“What?!” I replied.
“Nadia hasn’t spoken to you since early yesterday and that’s what is upsetting you!”
He looked like a child who just owned his kindergarten teacher with a brilliant answer. From my own personal view, he looked stupid and extremely annoying.
“This” I accorded him, “and not making a single point during a game” I exhaled, “that is what is upsetting me”
“Shit’s gonna be just fine, bro!” he said, patting the back of my shoulder. “Plus, I think I just heard your phone vibrate!”
He pointed to my phone. I held it so tight in my hand that I didn’t even feel it! I thought I was hallucinating when I saw the name on the screen.
“This can’t be true…” I muttered, looking at this name I’ve been dreaming of.
“Damn, answer your freaking phone!” Pat exclaimed.
Nadia’s P.O.V.
“Damn, answer your freaking phone!” I whispered.
Tommy was next to me, watching me pacing around the room.
“Hello, Nadia!” I heard in my phone.
“Hey Jonathan!” I almost screamed into my phone.
Gosh I was way too enthusiastic…
“How are you?” he asked me in what seemed a scared voice.
“I’m fine, just a little tired. How about you?”
“Very tired but not bad. Just a little sorry for not doing anything special yesterday”
I heard him exhale. It seemed to make him feel very bad to not have done anything during the game.
“It’s ok, you still have the whole season to impress me” I proudly said.
Then I heard Tommy facepalming himself and gesturing me that it could have been the stupidest thing to ever come out of my mouth in this situation.
“Excuse me?” he asked. “Impress you?”
Silence on both sides. I was starting to freak out. What the hell was wrong with me? Oh yeah, I remember…
“I… I’ll call you back later” I quickly said, hanging up.
“Did you even take the time to finish your sentence before pressing end call?”
“I… I’m not even s-sure…” I mumbled.
I sat heavily on the chair behind me and hid my face in my hands. What the fuck was so fucking wrong with me?!
Patrick’s P.O.V.
Jon made a weird face and looked at his phone.
“What was this conversation?” I asked.
“I’d tell you if I knew… Her roommate was right, she can be very weird sometimes”
“How weird?” I asked curiously.
I knew she was weird but maybe he had a detail he didn’t how to make work in his favor. Maybe I could…
“He only said that she had some self-esteem issues but it seemed deeper or worse the way he said it”
“Really?”
“Yeah… I guess you were right. If she has this kind of flaws I’ll leave her some time and space to make up her mind. Maybe it takes her longer to get used to something than most people”
He looked at me as if he was looking for someone to agree with him. And how I agreed with him!
“Sure thing! I told you and it may be true” I said as seriously as I could, trying to hide my happiness of a newfound strategy.
“Yep. I’ll try to catch up on some sleep on our way. Please don’t wake me up!”
“Yes Captain!”
He chuckled and quickly fell asleep. I waited a few minutes to make sure he was asleep deeply enough so I could do my thing incognito. I looked through my contacts and waited for her to answer.
“Hey Nadia! How are you?”
Ow, my head… And my back. And my stomach. And my hair. I opened my eyes. That hurt. Moving my body seemed to need a superhuman strength I didn’t have.
