White Horse

Pretty Please?

Tapping her pencil against her desk, Olivia looked over at the clock on the wall above the door.

1:47

Still about fifteen minutes left in class, then she would be done for the week.

Looking forward at the projection screen, she saw that her history teacher had changed the slide, giving the class new information on the Soviet Union. Olivia put her pencil down and lend her head back. That what she loved about being in the back row of the class. She could move her body parts out of the area of her desk-chair combo and not hit anyone behind her.

Letting out a sigh she brought her hands to her face, covering her eyes. Then she felt someone flick her arm. Moving her hands she saw her friend Nathan standing next to her. He stuck his tongue out at her, she went to hit him but their teacher’s voice stopped them both.

“Nathan, leave Olivia alone.”

Letting out a little mocking laugh Olivia stuck her tongue out at Nathan. He passed her desk and walked to the back of the class to sign out for the bathroom. Olivia let out another little chuckle and rolled her eyes at Nathan. She picked up her pencil again and started to copy down the words on the slide to her notebook.

Time passed and Nathan never came back. Olivia looked back at the door, expecting him to walk in but then everyone started packing up. Looking up she saw the clock read 1:59. Pulling out her phone, she quickly texted Nathan saying:

Where are you??

Putting her phone back, she grabbed her pencil, notebook, and pencil pouch putting them all in her backpack. Standing up Olivia put her backpack on then stretched her arms out.

“Hey Liv.”

Turning around she saw her friend David standing next to her.

“Hey Davey.”

She said then they both wrapped their arms around each other in a hug.

“What’s new?”

“Nothing really. You?”

“Just looking forward to the weekend, hanging out with some people. You going to the game?”

“Tonight?”

“Yeah. Me and a couple guys are going, you should tag along.”

“Totally. Has Nate come back?”

Olivia asked looking around the classroom. David did the same, but didn’t see him either.

“Doesn’t look like it.”

“His stuff is still here. Do you th-”

The bell rang and the classroom started to empty as if on cue.

“Have a good weekend.”

Their teacher said from the front of the classroom.

“Bye Mr. Page.”

Olivia called out as she walked with David out of the side door.

“Should I pick you up at six?”

David asked, opening the door for him and Olivia. She was going to answer but stopped when they entered the hallway. The people around them weren’t moving in any way, they were all trying to get a look at whatever was in the middle of the large crowd.

“What is going on?”

Olivia asked as she stood on her tip toes, still not being able to see, and hoping someone would answer her.

“Come on.”

David grabbed her hand and pulled her with him as he pushed through the crowd to the front.

“Oh, my God.”

Olivia said with a laugh when she saw what stood in the clearing of the crowd.

There was four large refrigerator boxes that were covered in black butcher paper. The only person standing in the clearing was her friend Jo. He was dressed in all black, a black cape with red underneath, white gloves, top hat on his head, and a classic magicians wand in his hand.

Jo saw Olivia and smiled. Clapping his white gloved hands together, people around him stopped talking and looked at him.

“Ah, now ladies and gentlemen. If I may have you attention, the magic show may begin.”

He said, turning with a quick movement, making his cape fly up in the back just a tad.
“For this trick I will need the assistances of a volunteer. Preferably a young lady. Now let me see, who shall I choose?”

He asked, putting his hand on his chin, looking around the crowd. The young highschool girls jumped up and down with their hands high in the air, hoing that they would be chosen.

“Ah ha. You miss, come forward.”

Jo said pointing at Olivia. She let out a laugh and pointed to herself. Jo chuckled as well and walked over to her, and took her hand, leading her into the centre of the clearing.

“I need you to stand right here, miss.”

“Jo wh-”

“Shh, the Incredible Johnny needs to fouse.”

Letting out a confused and nervous laugh, Olivia looked around at the crowd around her. She could feel the blush rushing to her cheeks, she felt vulnerable. It didn’t feel this way when she was on the ice. There she had her gear on to protect her. Now she stood around 50 people and she felt as if she was naked.

“I need complete silence, please!”

Jo said then cracked his knuckles and walked up to the first three of the boxes. The crowd around him and Olivia was now quiet as they looked on with their eyes or through their phone. Now Olivia felt more eyes and camera phone on her as she stood watching Jo.

“Prepare to be amazed!”

Putting his hands up, one with the wand in it, he cleared his throat then paused for a moment.

“Peskipiksi Pesternomi!”

He said loudly, hitting the first three boxes with his wand. After the wand hit the last box, the three boxes seemed to fall apart at the corners. When the cardboard walls fell apart it showed Olivia’s friends Cameron, Zach, and Luke. All three of them were holding onto neon pink poster boards with white writing on each board, each one had something different on them. Cameron’s read “HOME”, Zach’s “COMING”, and Luke’s had a big question mark. The crowd awed, but Jo held his hands up, making them silent once more.

“Damn, that wasn’t it… Oh, I remember now! Expelliarmus!”

He hit the last box and the walls feel to reveal Nathan. There he stood with a bouquet of tulips, a single red balloon, and a pink poster board that read “Pretty Please.” Now the crowd awed again and Olivia stood there with her hand over her mouth hiding her huge smile that was on her face.

“What do you say, Liv?”

Nathan asked with a goofy grin on his face. She let her hand fall from her mouth and let out a laugh. Nodding her head then she said yes. The crowd cheered and Nathan walked over to her and gave her a hug.

“I was so nervous.”

Nathan confessed when he held her in his arms and she let out another laugh and looked up at him.

“You were nervous? I thought Jo was asking me and I was freaking the hell out.”

She told him as he let go of her and handed her the flowers and balloon.

“This is going viral!”

Jo said loudly, walking over with his phone out, ready to take the couple’s picture.

“Get together you two love birds.”

He ordered as he opened his camera app. Nathan pulled Olivia into his side, wrapping his arms around her waist and held the sign in his other hand. Olivia’s free hand went up and rested on Nathan’s chest and the two looked over at Jo with smiles on their faces.

“Alright. One, two, three.”

Smiles on their faces they waited a few seconds before Jo lowered his phone.

“Lovely, you two.”

Olivia couldn’t wipe the smile off of her face. She looked up at Nathan who looked down at her at the same time.

“How long have you had this planned?”

“A few weeks or so.”

“You sneaky bastard.”

She said with a laugh and hit Nathan’s chest. He laughed and then called Jo’s name.

“What do you want me to do?”

“Nothing, man. Take your lady and get out of here.”

“What about-”

“I’ll get a ride from Zach. Just go, man.”

Both Olivia and Nathan laughed. Jo congratulated them and walked away to go help clean up.

“Let me go grab my stuff from Page’s. Then we can go.”

“Sure thing.”

She said with a smile. Nathan smiled back and then headed back into their sixth period.

“Here Liv.”

Turning her attention to Cameron, who walked over with the three signs that him, Zach, and Luke held.

“Thanks Cam.”

She said taking them in her free hand. Cameron smiled and helped her with the signs.

“See ya at the game?”

“Wouldn’t miss it.”

Cam smiled again and gave her a quick side hug, then ran back to the others.

“That was unexpected.”

David said walking up to her, she let out a half hearted laugh and rolled her eyes.

“Yeah. He’d had it planned for a few weeks.”

“Do you want some help?”

“No, thanks. I got it.”

“Just be happy you don’t have walk home. You still want me to pick you up for the game tonight?”

“Um, yeah. Six right?”

“Yup, six o’ clock. I’ll see you then.”

“Totally.”

Then the door opened of Mr. Page’s class opened, making the two look behind them to see Nathan walking out with his backpack over one shoulder.

“Ready?”

“Yup.”

“Hey David.”

Nathan said seeing him standing next to Olivia.

“Hey Nate. Congrats you guys.”

“Thanks, man.”

“Good luck tonight Nate. See ya later, Liv.”

David said as he turned around to walk down the hallway.

“Bye Davey.”

“See ya David.”

He waved as he walked down the hall away from Olivia and Nathan.

“This way, my lady.”

Nathan said gesturing towards the double doors that were a few feet from them. Letting out a laugh Olivia followed Nathan out into the snowy parking lot.

“So, do we hold hands or something?”

“What?”

“I don’t know. Are we a couple now? I have no idea how this works to be quite honest.”

Olivia laughed and took Nathan’s hand in her’s.

“Don’t worry, hoss. I’m not sure either.”

Nathan smiled and looked down at Olivia, knowing that he couldn’t stop smiling when she held onto his hand.
