Forever Chicago

Ch. 13

The next day Jonathan kissed Ollie and I goodbye as he left for the Hawks for playoff game in St. Louis.

“Good luck.” I yelled as I closed the door behind him and Patrick.

I was left alone in the apartment with Ollie for a few hours before I would meet Riley at her doctor’s appointment to find out the sex of the baby.

“Hi!” Riley yelled as we met up at the doctor’s office.

“Are you excited?” I asked.

“So nervous.” She laughed.

“Don’t be,” I smiled, “I’m sure either way you’ll be happy.”

The doctor ran the blue liquid gel over Riley’s stomach.

“And we would like to know the sex?” she said.

“Yes!” Riley gleamed.

“You are having a little baby girl.” She said.

Riley beamed.

“You’re having a girl!” we shrieked as we walked out of the hospital.

Riley was about three months along.

“Congratulations!” I said as we hugged goodbye.

“I’ll see you at work.” She smiled.

I returned to my apartment shortly later.

For some reason I had been feeling weird about Riley’s pregnancy. It was almost like I was jealous, but I didn’t want to be. I was genuinely thrilled for Riley. But part of me felt like everyone was moving to the next stage in their relationship, while Jonathan and I were at a standstill.

I loved Jonathan now more than ever, but I couldn’t help but want more for him, for us.

Jonathan’s POV:

As the plane touched down in St. Louis, I had way more on my mind than hockey. I couldn’t stop thinking about Kodie, and how amazing she was, and how much I wanted to spend forever with her.

I knew I wanted to propose to Kodie, I just didn’t know how.

“Hey, you okay man?” Bicks said turning to me.

“Uh yeah.” I said.

“Come on, I know that look,” he said, “What’s on your mind?”

“I, uh, uh,” I stuttered, “I want to propose to Kodie.”

“What?” he said, “That’s great man, how ya gonna do it?”

“That’s the problem.” He said.

“Ah.” He said, “Why don’t you just, I don’t know keep it simple.”

“What’d you do?” I asked.

“We went to Paris.” He said.

I shot Bick’s a sarcastic glare.

“What?” he smirked.

Kodie’s POV:
I sat on the couch cuddled with Ollie, his round face stared up at me.

“It’s just you and for the weekend kiddo.” I said, staring into his cute little eyes.

As we sat on the couch, my phone rang; an unknown number appeared across the screen.

“Hello” I said scratching Ollie’s back as I answered.

“Hi” a scratchy voice growled through the other end, “Kodie?”

“Yes, who is this?” I said.

“Ya motha.” The voice snarled, “Heard you wa shackin up with a big hawkey sta.” her Boston accent was so thick I could barely understand her.

“What do you want mother?” Was all I said.

“That’s no way to talk to ya ma girl. I brought you into this world.” She said.

I nearly hung up the phone, she was clearly drunk.

“What do yasay you send ya motha a few dollas?” she snarled.

I immediately hung up.

Normally I would’ve called Jonathan right away, but it was the playoffs and I didn’t want to stress him out.

The next night all the wives and kids flocked to Riley’s apartment to watch the game.

“So,” A pregnant Amanda Bickell said as we sat together on the couch amongst everyone else, “How are things with Jon?”

“Good,”I said, “I mean we’re happy, I just I kinda feel like we’re at a standstill.”

“I know what you mean.” She said, “I felt the same way right before Bryan proposed, don’t worry, it will work out, you two are perfect for each other.”

I wish Amanda’s words had made me feel better.

The puck dropped and the game was on.The first period was furious, Patrick Sharp took down David Backes within the first ten minutes.

“Mommy!” Maddy yelled to Abby who was in the kitchen helping Riley, “Daddy’s fighting!”

Abby rushed into the living room, just in time to see Sharpy throw Backes to the ice, but not before getting a nasty cut below his lip.

“Ugh.” Abby said covering her face, “That looked harsh.”

Sharpy left the ice, blood spewing from his mouth.

It wasn’t long before Jonathan got his.

The second period began with the hawks leading the blues 2-1.

As the period droned on with the Hawks taking a 3-1 lead, the Blues frustration was obvious.

With about 6 minutes left in the period, I watched as Paul Stastny blasted a shot from the Blue line. Jonathan hurled himself in front of the puck.

I pulled my knees up as I watched the puck sail directly into Jonathan’s forehead, just above his eye. My palms moved to my temples, as Jonathan dropped his stick and skated off the ice.

“Oh my God.” I said.

Jonathan didn’t return to the ice until the third period. The score was tied at 3-3. Jonathan sported what looked like at least 12 stitches over an eye that would undoubtedly be swollen shut tomorrow.

We watched in horror as the final seconds ticked down and TJ Oshie roared up the ice, he dangled through defenders unable to be stopped. The puck soared past Corey Crawford and into the net. The final horn sounded, and we had lost.

It was a tough loss to swallow. The guys all hung their heads down low as they filed into the locker room.

The room was quiet.

“We’ll get em’ next game.” Andrew Shaw’s girlfriend Chaunette said, breaking the silence.

We all shifted and began cleaning up and heading home.

“Hey call me if you need to talk or anything.” Amanda Bickell said as we headed out the door.

“Thanks, I’ll see you later.” I said heading in the opposite direction.

I fell into bed with Ollie as soon as I got home.

The next morning, I awoke early and showered. I was irritated to find that my mediocre feeling still had not left my body.

As I brushed my hair and pulled on a pair of dark jeans, and a white v neck t shirt, I tried to force a smile to my face.

Jonathan would be home around 4, giving me enough time to hang out with Riley and Paige.

The three of us met up at a baby store to start looking at nursery ideas.

“I like pink, but the purple is pretty too.” Riley said holding to paint samples, “Kodie what do you think? Kodie? Kodieeee?”

She snapped me out of my deep thoughts.

“What yeah that’s pretty.” I said.

“Are you okay?” she asked, “You’ve been kind of out of it for a few days now.”

“Yeah,” I nodded, “Just play off stress and stuff.”

“Don’t worry,” she said, “Now pink or purple?”

“Hey gorgeous.” Jonathan said, kissing me as I walked through the door.

“Oh my God,” I said seeing his eye for the first time.

“It’s not that bad.” He said hugging my waist.

“Jonathan yes it is.” I said running my finger over the swelling.

Jonathan’s entire left eye was swollen completely shut, the sick protruded from the swelling, and his cheek was bright red. The sight of it made me want to cry.

I held ice over Jonathan’s forehead as we sat nestled in the couch, Ollie stretched across us.

Jonathan’s POV:
Damn, she’s sexy I thought as Kylie sat there holding ice to my swollen forehead. She was perfect, amazing, and in that moment I knew exactly how I wanted to propose to Kodie.
