Forever Chicago

Ch. 8

“Wake uppp.” I said rolling over on top of Jonathan.

He laughed as I lay my body over his.

“Hi.” He said kissing me as our faces met.

“Hi.” I said kissing back harder.

Jonathan rolled over on top making me laugh while he began to kiss down the side of my neck. Just as I began to nibble against his ear, Jonathan’s cell phone rang from the kitchen.

Jonathan groaned, as he pulled on a pair of sweatpants to go answer it.

I pulled on a pair of leggings and a V-neck t shirt and met Jonathan in the kitchen where he was still on the phone.

“Yeah, okay, yeah.” Jonathan spoke quietly, before hanging up the phone.

“What happened?” I asked.

“Kaner’s in jail, I gotta go get him out.” He said.

“I sighed as he kissed me on the cheek.

Patrick had been arrested three times in one month, all alcohol related offenses.

“I’ll be back.” He said as he left in a hurry.

I called Riley immediately after Jon left,

“Did Jon go to?” she said as soon as she answered the phone.

“Yeah, do you know what happened?” I asked.

“No,” she said, “Ben practically ran out of here though.”

“John too.” I said, “Does Paige know?”

“Yeah I just told her, she just turned around and went back to her room, it was kind of weird.”

She said, “Hey are you working tonight?”

“Yeah two to twelve, you?” I asked.

“three to two, see you there!” she laughed.

“Bye.” I laughed.

Two hours passed and Jonathan still had not returned with Patrick. I scribbled a note on the counter as I left for work.

Left for work, hope things went okay! Love, Kodie

As I walked passed a newsstand on the way to the hospital, I was horrified.

A picture of an extremely drunk Patrick was plastered across the front of the Chicago Daily. Captioned
“Blackhawks star takes nose dive after breakup with model girlfriend,” My stomach flipped at the sight of it.

“Kodie!” My supervisor yelled as soon as I walked through the door, “Rose is having bloodwork done, she needs you right away.”

I threw my bag at the front desk and ran straight to Rose’s room.

“Kodie!” she yelled out as I ran through the door, “It hurts!”

I kneeled by her bedside, “I know sweetie just squeeze it’s almost over.” Rose grabbed my hand tightly as the machine pumped her blood through a circular valve.

Tears streamed down her little face, as I brushed a curl away from her deep eyes.

“Where are her parents?” I asked the nurse recording her cycle. She just shrugged.

“Rose do you know where your Mommy is?” I asked as she gripped tightly to my hand.

“This morning she said she was leaving and going where the angels go.” Rose said.

Rose’s comment made my heart skip a beat, Rose’s mother was a drug addict. We had known since the first day Rose was diagnosed. She would often leave Rose alone in the hospital for days on end, her payments were sporadic and rare.

“Kodie it hurts.” Rose cried, “Will you say my song?”

Rose had a poem, complete with goofy nicknames for the both of us, I always recited to her when her pain flared up.

“Of course,” I said,"Winken, Blinken, and Nod one night

Sailed off in a wooden shoe.
Sailed off on a river of crystal light,Into a sea of dew.
“Where are you going, and what do you wish?”The old moon asked the three.
“We have come to fish for the herring fish
That live in the beautiful sea;
Nets of silver and gold have we!”
Said Winken, Blinken, and Nod.
The old moon laughed and sang a song,
As they rocked in the wooden shoe. And the wind that sped them all night long
Ruffled the waves of dew.
The little stars were the herring fishThat lived in the beautiful sea.
”Now cast your nets wherever you wish—
Never afeard are we.”
So cried the stars to the fisherman three,
Winken, Blinken, and Nod,

“How ya feelin Winken?” I asked.

“Much better Blinken.” She smiled.

Rose gently fellasleep, as I found my way to the front desk, I was shocked at what I found.

“Jonathan?” I smiled as I walked through the double doors.

“Hi.” He smiled cutely, as he stood holding a bouquet of my favorite sunflowers.

“Oh my gosh.” I laughed falling into his arms, “What are you doing here?”

“Well I was on my way home from the United Center, and I don’t know I missed you.” He smiled.

“Aw thank you.” I said, kissing him and placing the flowers on the desk.

“Wait you have to meet this little girl,” I said, “She’s like your biggest fan.”

I explained Rose’s sickness to Jonathan as we walked towards her room.

“Rose,” I said gently knocking on the door, “there’s someone here who wants to meet you.”

I moved aside allowing Rose her first glimpse of Jonathan. Her jaw dropped open.

“Hi Rose.” Jonathan said.

“You’re, you’re Tazer, you’re Jonathan Toews!” She yelled.

As the two chatted Rose seemed to forget about her sickness, it wasn’t until her blood was finished pumping that she felt the pain.

“Ow, Kodie, it hurts again,” she whaled.

“Okay, it’s okay.” I said grabbing her picking her hand up.

“Can you sing my song again.” She said sweetly.

Jonathan’s POV:
I watched in amazement as Kodie brought Rose from a stateof hysteria to complete zhen.
The words of Rose’s song dripped like honey from Kodie’s lips.

I watched as Kodie stroked Rose’s curls back from her face. I had never realized what an amazing, gentle nurse Kodie was.

As she sang to Rose, Kodie’s face lit up in a way I had never seen before. She was more beautiful than I had ever seen her.

“How ya feelin Winken?” she spoke gently to Rose.

“Much better now Blinken.” Rose giggled.

While Rose fell asleep, Kodie and I walked back to the front of the hospital.

“You’re amazing.” I said, as I looked down over her.

Her cheeks blushed in embarrassment, “No,” she smiled.

“Yes you are.” I said, as I kissed her deeply.

As I walked out of the hospital, I realized more than ever how badly I wanted to spend the rest of my life with Kodie.

Kodie’s POV:
After Jonathan left, Rose continued to have a rough night, her arms, and legs were on pins and needles. I must have sang her song ten times.

“Kodie?” Riley said as she stood in the doorway of Rose’s room, “Your shift was over an hour ago.”

“Shhh,” I gently whispered, I got up from Rose’s bedside and closed the door, “She had a rough time with her treatment tonight.”

“Aw,” Riley said, “Well get outta here, I’ll see you tomorrow.”

I laughed, “Bye, have a good night.”

“You too.” She whispered down the hall.

I crept into the apartment around 1 am. Careful not to wake Jonathan I slid into a tank top and shorts and slipped into bed.
