We Are Here and Now

Six

"Are you coming to Columbus with my parents babe?" Sid asked from inside his office. He was making notes of when his parents would be around for the first round of playoffs and getting all their flight information from his mother.

CiCi, however, was ignoring Sidney's question. Instead she wandered across the hall in her painting clothes and a wet paintbrush covered in black paint. She had been working on her next project, but was getting frustrated. "Can you come look at this? I think that my proportions are off."

"Uh, in a minute. I'm on the phone with my Mom. You're coming to Columbus right? I just want to make sure we get two rooms in the team's hotel."

"When?"

"Next week."

"Oh, yeah. I mean why wouldn't I? I don't have anything else going on in my life. Not like I have a job to go to or a wedding to plan or anything." She spun and walked back over to her studio and Sidney could feel her frustrations seeping through every word.

"Two rooms, Mom. I have to go, we will see you and Dad on Thursday then?" He said and waited for Trina to say goodbye. When he finally got off the phone, he dug into the back of the desk drawer to retrieve the small ring box, then turned to open a filing cabinet that wasn't quite full. Sidney reached for the new paintbrush set that CiCi had been eyeing at the supply store the last time they went together and removed the ring from the box. He secured the ring around two of the smallest brushes and placed the rest of the brushes on his desk. It was now or never. He knew his plan wasn't much, but it would be catching her off guard.

CiCi left the door to her studio cracked and the noises of spring were filtering through the opened windows. Sidney stopped to admire his girlfriend as she fussed over a specific spot on a canvas that displayed what appeared to be a carnival scene.

"Sherry was approached by the owners of Kennywood about wanting a nostalgic piece to display in their large dining hall. She asked me if I could do it. They are paying a few thousand bucks."

Sidney cracked a soft smile when he was discovered, but not exactly caught. CiCi kept her back to him the entire time, but she was able to sense him and he loved that about her. She was very much in tune with everyone and everything in her life. He pushed the door open and walked into the room.

"Whoa," Sid said as he came up behind CiCi. They stood about two feet away from the canvas and the entire display changed in front of him. "It's entirely different, how did you do that?"

"I've been channeling some Georges Seurat. But I feel like I've got that corner where the Ferris wheel is messed up."

"This close I can't really tell."

"The dimensions I allotted that area of the park is off. I swear it. I need some turpentine. Or paint thinner." CiCi leaned against Sidney who took advantage of the position she was in to wrap his free arm around her waist. His other hand positioned to flash her the ring when the timing was right.

"Maybe you need some new brushes," Sid suggested.

"New brushes? Brushes aren't the problem. The painter is the problem," CiCi tried to step out of Sid's embrace, but he held her tight and rested his chin on her shoulder.

"I don't know. Maybe some fresh brushes will do the trick."

"The craft store is open until 9," CiCi started to reason. She wasn't paying attention to the movement behind her and didn't notice Sidney flash the new brushes in front of her. When she finally noticed she didn't even see the antique two carat diamond holding the brushes together. But the brushes silenced her and she allowed Sid to spin her around and watch as he dropped to one knee.

"You're one of the most self-critical people I've ever met. The painting is perfect. You're perfect and this proposal should have been perfect, but you continue to put yourself down. So, will you just actually look at the brushes and see that this is me, asking you, Cesira, to marry me."

CiCi finally saw it and had nothing to say. Her voice, caught in her throat, tears burning the corners of her eyes. She brought her hands to her face and held back a silent hiccup.

"I've wanted to ask you for nearly nine months now. I've known since the first summer where we traveled and barely saw each other that you were special. And now as you stand in this studio, in our home that we have made for ourselves, I am asking you to marry me. I love you beyond measure and I can't imagine my life without you. Will you, please, be my wife?" He held tightly to the brushes and waiting for her answer.

But CiCi didn't say anything. She stood in awe at how simple and perfect he made the proposal. When she least expected it. Right after she nagged him again about planning a wedding. She couldn't say a word, she knew if she tried she would cry. But she nodded her head yes vigorously, and collapsed into his arms the brushes holding the ring forgotten.

"It's about damn time you answered me," he laughed softly and CiCi pulled back and stared at him.

"It took you long enough to ask! Now where's that ring?" He took the ring off the makeshift bouquet and placed it on her paint smeared finger. "Ugh, it should be sliding on to a manicured and stain free finger!"

"It's perfect. This ring," Sid lifted CiCi's hand to his lip and he brushed a kiss on her ring finger, "Is meant to be on this hand."

"I love you so much!" CiCi squealed wrapping her arms tightly around Sid's neck. He shifted so that he was sitting and CiCi was straddling his legs in a very intimate position. One that Sid had been avoiding for the last couple weeks, not for lack of desire but because how he still was embarrassed.

"You're gonna get paint all over you," CiCi murmured as her fingers slid up into Sid's hair.

"Then I guess we will have to wash it off in the shower, huh?" Sid shuddered at her touch. He pulled her flush against him and captured her lips with his finally.

CiCi found the moment surreal and sighed happily into the kiss. She smiled as she felt him getting aroused and instantly knew she needed to feel him. It had been too long.

He broke the kiss and nuzzled her neck. He whispered, "Say it again."

CiCi didn't need reminded. "Yes, I'll marry you."

His mouth moved against hers softly and she could taste the mint on his breath with each slide of his lips and tongue against hers. He stroked her hipbone softly and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, tilting his head to create a slow, torturous friction.

He pulled back and breathed, "Let me make love to you."

She nodded her head, desire filling her up. "Here?"

"Bedroom." As much as Sidney wanted to just let loose right there on the floor of CiCi's studio, his want to have her in their bed outweighed it. He wanted to spend the rest of their afternoon naked and tangled up together. CiCi quickly stood from Sid's lap and waited as he stood beside her.

He took her hand and guided her upstairs to their bedroom. He sat on the edge of the bed and she climbed on top of him, pushing him down gently onto his back. They resumed their soft, gentle kisses and his hands trailed along her sides under her shirt, tracing secret patterns along smooth skin.

CiCi leaned back and pulled her shirt over her head, exposing her bare breasts to the cool air. She cupped his face and captured his lips passionately with her own, catching sight of the shining rock on her hand before doing so. He immediately took control, kissing her desperately, stroking his fingers along the outline of her breast.

"Sidney," she gasped when he finally touched her sensitive nipple with his rough thumb, burning a slow trail of heat through her chest. He captured the soft skin of her neck between his teeth, eliciting a low moan from her throat. She could feel his labored breathing hot on her neck, his heart pounding in his chest.

Sidney kissed her with a gentleness that she returned. Heat spread under her skin with every new inch of skin he explored with his fingers. He yanked his t-shirt over his head before returning his lips to her skin. His lips trailed down her jaw to her neck where he left feather light kisses.

Suddenly she was pulled up so that Sidney was holding her tightly against his body, her knees on either side of his lap. He continued to lavish kisses on her exposed neck and collarbone as his hands began to loosen the tie on her sweatpants. She managed to pull herself up so that he could push the soft material down her hips, panties included, and she helped him the rest of the way by quickly standing and kicking them off her long legs.

His lips parted when he took in her naked figure and he whispered, "You're perfect."

He placed a searing kiss between her breasts, not losing eye contact and causing a blush to spread across her cheekbones. Her heart was beating out of control and she was certain that Sidney would be able to hear it. She caught his mouth up in a ferocious kiss that he returned with equal enthusiasm and her hands began to pull at his belt. He pushed her forward with a closed mouth kiss so that she was lying underneath him.

"You might be able to wiggle out of your pants easily, but I sure as hell can't," he teased her as he stood. He undid his belt and slowly dropped his jeans and boxers to his ankles, exposing his thick, hard member.

He crawled over her body again and kissed her sloppily, lowering her body onto the mistress again. He pressed kissed along her throat, the hollow between her collarbones, between her breasts and across the flat plane of stomach paying close attention to the few surgical scars visible. He flicked his tongue at her belly button before gripping her hips firmly.

"I will never get tired of this," he breathed before pulling her clit into his mouth.

CiCi let out an almost tragic moan and drew the bedsheets into her fists. He kept one hand firmly planted on one hip and reached his other hand up, lacing his fingers through hers. CiCi almost melted at the intimate gesture. He lapped at her folds and brought a finger down from the hand that wasn't holding CiCi's. He slipped it into her wet warmth and felt her tighten around his digit. He pumped and pumped into her, building speed, matching the rhythm of it with his tongue on her clit. His name spilled from her mouth desperately as she came, and Sidney chuckled proudly against her flesh.

He sat up again and kisses her lips softly. Finally he settled between her legs, covering her body with his. He gripped his cock in his fist and guided it to her entrance, swirling the head around her wetness. He pushed forward slowly, hissing at the sensation of her squeezing him tightly.

"You okay, baby?" He asked breathlessly.

"Yes," she breathed, and bucked her hips slightly to urge him on.

He smirked and pulled back slightly, releasing a long breath at the feeling. He began to thrust into her again, propping himself up on one elbow and curling his fingers behind one of her knees with the other hand. He yanked her leg up so he could drive deeper into her and she mewled softly.

"Oh God, Sidney, I love you."

"I love you too, Ci, Jesus Christ."

He stroked the smooth skin on her knee, quickly dampening with sweat, and buried his face in her neck. He whispered words to her that she struggled to hear.

"So fucking good...Only you CiCi...always love you."

Her heart expanded with love and she curled her fingers into his hair, bringing his mouth up to meet hers. After thrusting into her until she felt raw, she felt her stomach begin to tighten. Kissing him languidly, she moaned into his mouth and then pulled back to gasp for air.

"Sid, I'm gonna cu..."

Her cry was lost in a long moan as her orgasm crashed into her, sending her body bucking and twitching wildly. Sid bit into her shoulder, hard, and the mixture of pain and pleasure made her orgasm even stronger. He grunted loudly against her skin as he emptied his load deep inside her.

Sidney collapsed next to her, breathing erratically. He looped his fingers through hers and stroked his thumb across the back of her hand.

"Promise me you won't go too crazy planning our wedding. I'll do it whenever and wherever. If you'd rather wait until next year or the next. If you'd rather just go to the justice of the peace tomorrow. I don't care, just as long as I get to marry you. And there isn't a crazy amount of attention being drawn to it."

He was on his back so CiCi couldn't see his face, but she heard the subtle plea in his voice. She rolled onto his chest, their skin sticking together slightly with sweat, and kissed his jaw.

"I promise."

He grinned at her and pressed his lips to hers. "Should we go call our parents to tell them the good news or stay in bed and have sex the rest of the day?"

"Mm, sex," Cici claimed Sid's mouth before he could protest. Not that he intended to.

CiCi found a table at the food court and waited. She had received a call from Sidney earlier telling her that he was picking his parents up and they were going to stop for lunch near the mall. She had been welcomed to join them, but she arrived earlier and was not exactly certain as to a meeting time or place. She wandered the mall for a bit, found a gorgeous complimentary charm bracelet for Trina to go with the one she had given her future mother-in-law for her birthday and a couple new dress shirts for Sidney.

She glanced down at her left hand, hugging the Starbucks coffee cup, and stared at her ring. It was more than she ever wanted, but it spoke volumes to Sidney's character. After they finally wore each other out, they were cuddling in bed when Sidney explained how he had gone through several jewelry stores looking for the perfect ring. He finally found the one at an antique store in Shadyside. It had a sad story behind it and when Sidney finished listening to it he was convinced that the ring needed a new life. One where the story would end happily. He immediately bought the reasonably priced ring, and had been satisfied with it.

That had been months ago, and he insisted he needed the perfect time to ask. And then, he admitted, that he never found the perfect time. He finally decided just to do it because he wanted to be married. CiCi couldn't have been any happier and since his proposal she hadn't thought about anything that had been bringing her down recently. She avoided telling her girlfriends yet, she'd rather do it in person. Which she would be doing the following evening during the first playoff game. Her parents and Sidney's parents all knew that he finally dropped to one knee. And each of them were thrilled over the news.

"Earth to Cesira, come in!" A make's voice interrupted her reverie and she quickly placed her ring hand in her lap, hiding the shining diamond.

"Oh, Sam! I'm sorry, I didn't hear you," she greeted her former coworker.

"No problem. May I sit?" He pointed to the seat across from her and CiCi silently nodded and welcomed his company.

"What are you doing here on a Thursday at 11:30 in the morning?" CiCi asked, forgetting that he was still suspended.

"Oh, I'm on leave for the rest of this week. The board agreed that I can return on Monday."

"Oh my god, I'm sorry! I completely forgot. That's great news though!"

"Yeah, I'm looking forward to going back. What are you up to?"

"Just doing a little shopping. I'm supposed to be meeting some people here for lunch. But I don't know exactly where we are going to eat."

"No, I mean with your free time."

"Ah, just some freelance work for some area businesses that requested original artwork," she said as she flashed her hand around and reached for her coffee.

"Apparently getting married?" Sam asked, his eyes wide.

"Oh, uh yeah. This...this is new. We got engaged literally three days ago."

"Well congratulations! Who is the lucky guy?" Sam asked and it struck CiCi funny that he would. But she never really had a reason to tell him about her social life and she never went around flaunting who she dated. It wasn't her nature and Sidney appreciated that.

"I am," Sidney said startling both and making CiCi turn at the sound of his voice. He stood behind her with his parents on either side.

CiCi grinned widely at Trina who was waving and smiling back at her. "Hi you guys!"

"Hi sweetie!" Trina rounded Sid and leaned down to hug her daughter-in-law. CiCi reciprocated the hug, and stood up to join her family.

"Ah, you want to introduce us babe?" Sidney asked, a spark of jealousy appearing on his face. He possessively shrugged an arm around her shoulder as CiCi looked back over at Sam.

"Yeah, Sidney, this is Sam. My former coworker. He was passing by and saw me waiting here to hear from you."

"Hi, Sidney Crosby," Sid extended his free hand to the man across from him.

"Wow, I had no idea. I mean...I'm Sam Harris. CiCi never mentioned you before."

"She didn't?" Sid looked puzzled, but smiled at CiCi.

"No, I mean she told me she had a boyfriend. But she never said it was you. That is that she dates you."

"Well, we are going to be married so a little bit more than just dating," Sid shrugged his shoulders.

"Oh right. Anyway, I have to get going. It was very nice meeting all of you and CiCi I'll see you around. You look great." Sam smiled at CiCi and made to go in for a hug, but Sid held tight to CiCi.

"Bye Sam," she called as he retreated away from the family. She looked at Sidney, arched an eyebrow and wriggled out from his iron clad grip. She twisted her arm through Trina's after they gushed over the new ring and the ladies led the men away from the food court in the opposite direction of the way Sam had gone.

"What was that?" Trina whispered to CiCi.

"Your son discovered what it is like to be jealous."

"Oh Lord help us," Trina said as they giggled at Sidney's expense.

"I found it endearing at first, but now it's just silly."

"Yeah, but he has never had a reason to feel jealous of a guy giving his girlfriend attention."

"Yeah, I just tell myself that when he gets bad."

"I can hear you two!" Sidney said from behind them. CiCi turned to look over her shoulder and cracked a smile.

"What? It's true! I thought we were going to eat somewhere?"

"Oh we are, but I want to run to Nordstrom's quickly. I figure do it now and then we won't have to come back out here while we are in town."

CiCi understood and let Trina lead her and the guys towards the high end department store, but once inside Trina snagged Troy and the pair wandered off towards the men's department. CiCi fell in step with Sidney, avoiding contact since they were in such a public setting.

Sidney, however, didn't care and grabbed CiCi's hand in his. He didn't look at her as he fell into step beside her and fell back from his parents. When he knew the coast was clear and they had lost his parents he ducked in between a few racks of women's clothes and twirled CiCi to face him.

"I wouldn't say it's jealousy I am experiencing, but a bit possessiveness." CiCi nodded, wide-eyed by his actions. He leaned forward and pressed his lips to hers, caring even less than before that they were in public, pulled back and pressed his forehead to hers. "You're mine."

"Forever," CiCi agreed as she gripped his forearms and understood his possessive behavior. She just hoped that this newfound emotion didn't burn them.
